Exploring the Ancient Wonders of Herculaneum
Day 7: A Farewell to Herculaneum: Naples Beckons with Art and Culinary Delights
Elza and Hans-Peter conclude their Herculaneum adventure with a vibrant exploration of Naples' art, history, and culinary scene.
Naples, Here We Come!
Our final day in the region arrived with a mix of emotions. While I was sad to say goodbye to the ancient wonders of Herculaneum, a sense of excitement buzzed in the air as Hans-Peter and I prepared to immerse ourselves in the vibrant heart of Naples. Today was all about art, history, and, of course, the tantalizing flavors of Neapolitan cuisine.
We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Panetteria Coppola. It's a small bakery, but it was filled with locals grabbing a quick bite. I had a delicious pastry filled with ricotta and candied fruit, while Hans-Peter opted for a classic sfogliatella. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

Our first stop was the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, a treasure trove of Greco-Roman artifacts. As an archivist, I was in my element, surrounded by sculptures, mosaics, and everyday objects that offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives of people who lived centuries ago. Hans-Peter, with his restorer's eye, was particularly captivated by the intricate details of the mosaics, marveling at the skill and artistry of the ancient craftsmen. We spent hours wandering through the museum's vast collection, pausing to admire the Farnese Hercules, the stunning mosaics from Pompeii, and the intriguing exhibits from the Secret Cabinet.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After immersing ourselves in the ancient world, we ventured to the Sansevero Chapel Museum. This small, unassuming chapel holds some of the most breathtaking sculptures I have ever seen. The Veiled Christ, sculpted by Giuseppe Sanmartino, is an absolute masterpiece. The delicate marble veil appears so lifelike, it's hard to believe it's made of stone. Hans-Peter and I stood in awe, contemplating the skill and artistry that went into creating such a profound and moving work of art. The chapel itself is steeped in history and mystery, with each sculpture telling a story of faith, love, and human ingenuity. The anatomical machines in the basement were particularly fascinating, albeit a bit macabre. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

By this point, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Brancaccio Ristorante e Pizzeria for lunch. We shared a pizza Margherita, of course, and a plate of spaghetti alle vongole. The pizza was simple but perfect, with a crispy crust, tangy tomato sauce, and creamy mozzarella. The spaghetti was equally delicious, with the briny clams adding a burst of flavor to the perfectly cooked pasta. It was a truly authentic Neapolitan meal.

With our bellies full, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at the Galleria Umberto I. This stunning 19th-century shopping arcade is a feast for the eyes, with its soaring glass dome, ornate marble floors, and intricate mosaics. We strolled through the gallery, admiring the architecture and browsing the shops. I bought a beautiful silk scarf as a souvenir, while Hans-Peter found a vintage postcard to add to his collection. It was a delightful way to soak in the atmosphere of Naples.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Agriturismo Antico Ricupo, a charming farmhouse restaurant located just outside of Herculaneum. The restaurant is nestled in the countryside, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the stunning views of Mount Vesuvius. The food was simple but delicious, with fresh, local ingredients taking center stage. We started with a selection of antipasti, followed by homemade pasta with ragu sauce and grilled lamb chops. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through the region.

Throughout the day, I couldn't help but reflect on our trip. From the awe-inspiring ruins of Herculaneum to the vibrant streets of Naples, we had experienced so much in just a few short days. I felt a deep connection to the history and culture of this region, and I was grateful for the opportunity to share it with Hans-Peter. As we savored our last sips of wine, I knew that this was a trip we would cherish forever.
As our journey draws to a close, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness. This exploration of Herculaneum and Naples has been nothing short of extraordinary. Reflecting on the week, it's the small moments that stand out just as vividly as the grand historical sites. The warmth of the Italian sun, the aroma of freshly baked bread, the sound of lively chatter in the piazzas – these are the sensory details that have woven themselves into the fabric of my memories.
This evening, as we prepare for our flight back to Berlin, I find myself already longing for the day we can return to this captivating corner of Italy. Until then, the stories and images of Herculaneum and Naples will continue to inspire and enrich our lives.
Tomorrow marks the end of our trip, and we will be heading back home to Berlin, filled with memories and stories to share. Though our Italian adventure is coming to an end, the experiences and discoveries we made will stay with us for a lifetime. From the ancient ruins to the vibrant city streets and the delicious food, this trip has been a true feast for the senses.
Arrivederci, Italia! Until next time.
