Day 6: Capri's Charms: Gardens, Villas, and Sunset Views
Elza and Hans-Peter explore Capri's beauty, from Villa San Michele's tranquil gardens to Giardini di Augusto's stunning views and vibrant nightlife.
A Day of Island Dreams
Today, Hans-Peter and I embarked on a day trip to the enchanting island of Capri. After several days immersed in the ancient history of Herculaneum, we felt a change of pace would be refreshing. Capri, with its stunning natural beauty and charming villas, promised a delightful escape, and it certainly delivered.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Briciola. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting a cheerful tone for our island adventure. We discussed our plans for the day, eager to explore the attractions Capri had to offer. The boat ride to Capri was smooth, and the views of the coastline were simply breathtaking. The azure waters sparkled under the warm June sun, and the gentle sea breeze carried the scent of salt and wildflowers. As we approached the island, the iconic Faraglioni rocks came into view, rising majestically from the sea. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement as we prepared to disembark and immerse ourselves in Capri's unique atmosphere.
Our first stop was Villa San Michele, the former home of Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe. The villa is perched on a hillside in Anacapri, offering panoramic views of the island and the sea. As we wandered through the tranquil gardens, I was struck by the harmonious blend of nature and architecture. Statues and ancient artifacts were scattered among the vibrant flowers and lush greenery, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Hans-Peter, ever the observant one, pointed out the intricate details of the Roman and Egyptian relics that Munthe had collected over the years.

The beauty of Capri lies not only in its stunning landscapes but also in its ability to transport you to another world, where history and nature intertwine in perfect harmony.
We strolled through the vine-covered pergola, enjoying the shade and the fragrant scent of jasmine. From the terrace, we gazed out at the sprawling vista, admiring the picturesque towns and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. It was easy to see why Munthe had chosen this spot for his sanctuary. The villa exuded a sense of peace and tranquility, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life. As we explored the various rooms and courtyards, I couldn’t help but imagine the countless hours Munthe must have spent here, writing and contemplating amidst such inspiring surroundings. I made a mental note to add his book, *The Story of San Michele*, to my reading list.
Next, we made our way to the Giardini di Augusto, a botanical garden offering breathtaking views of the Faraglioni rocks and the Bay of Marina Piccola. Originally known as the Krupp Gardens, they were established in the early 20th century by the German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp. The gardens are a series of flowered terraces that lead to a stunning lookout point. As we walked through the gardens, we were surrounded by a riot of colors and scents. Geraniums, dahlias, and roses bloomed in abundance, creating a vibrant tapestry of floral beauty. The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of blossoms, and the sound of buzzing bees added to the idyllic atmosphere.

From the lookout point, we were treated to a breathtaking panoramic view. The Faraglioni rocks stood tall and proud against the azure sea, their jagged silhouettes creating a striking contrast with the smooth, shimmering water. Via Krupp, a narrow, winding road, snaked its way down the cliffs to Marina Piccola, adding to the dramatic scenery. I captured several photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment, but no image could truly do justice to the sheer magnificence of the landscape. Hans-Peter and I simply stood there for a while, soaking in the view and appreciating the natural wonders of Capri.
For lunch, we chose Sapori Di Capri Di D'Esposito Antonino, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Caprese cuisine. We savored the flavors of fresh seafood and locally grown vegetables, accompanied by a crisp, refreshing white wine. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and attentive. As we dined, we watched the boats bobbing gently in the harbor, and listened to the cheerful chatter of fellow travelers. It was a perfect midday break, allowing us to recharge our batteries before continuing our exploration of the island.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Terrazza Vesuvius. Perched high above the town, this bar offered stunning views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. We sipped on Aperol spritzes, watching as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we struck up conversations with fellow travelers from around the world. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a day filled with beauty and wonder.

We will also stop by Panetteria Coppola for breakfast, Brancaccio Ristorante e Pizzeria for lunch and Agriturismo Antico Ricupo for dinner. I am also looking forward to browsing the Galleria Umberto I for some unique souvenirs before our departure. I'm particularly interested in seeing the Veiled Christ at the Sansevero Chapel Museum, I have heard it is an awe-inspiring sculpture.
