Day 4: Coastal Dreams: A Day Trip to the Amalfi Coast and the Heights of Ravello
Elza and Hans-Peter explore the breathtaking Amalfi Coast, from scenic drives to the enchanting gardens of Ravello's Villa Cimbrone.
A Day of Coastal Splendor
Today, Hans-Peter and I embarked on a scenic adventure along the famed Amalfi Coast, a day filled with breathtaking views, charming towns, and the delightful discovery of Ravello's enchanting Villa Cimbrone. It was a journey that stirred the soul and reminded us of the beauty and tranquility that exists beyond the bustling streets of Berlin.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffetteria Salvo D'acquisto, conveniently located near our hotel. While the caffè wasn't the highlight of our culinary experiences, it provided the necessary fuel for our journey. I sipped an espresso, and Hans-Peter enjoyed a cappuccino. We made a mental note to perhaps explore other breakfast options tomorrow, and set off towards the Amalfi Coast. I had packed us some water and fruit, mindful of not forgetting our reusable water bottles again, a small oversight from the start of our trip.
The drive itself was an experience. The winding roads hugged the coastline, offering panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Each turn revealed a new vista, more stunning than the last. The sun danced on the water, creating a shimmering spectacle that was almost hypnotic. I found myself frequently asking Hans-Peter to stop so I could capture the beauty with my camera, hoping to preserve these moments forever. He obliged patiently, ever the supportive husband.
We arrived in Ravello in the late morning. The town, perched high above the coast, exuded an air of elegance and tranquility. The narrow streets, lined with charming shops and cafes, invited us to explore. We meandered through the town, soaking in the atmosphere, before making our way to Villa Cimbrone.

Villa Cimbrone was, without a doubt, the highlight of our day. As we walked through the gardens, I felt as though we had stepped into another world. The meticulously manicured lawns, the vibrant flowerbeds, and the ancient statues created a sense of timeless beauty. I was particularly captivated by the Terrace of Infinity, a breathtaking belvedere that offered unparalleled views of the Amalfi Coast. The view was so stunning that it felt like standing on the edge of the world. Gore Vidal called it the most beautiful view in the world, and it was easy to see why. I could almost imagine Greta Garbo and Leopold Stokowski eloping here, finding solace and romance amidst such beauty. I made sure to capture the view with my camera, trying to capture the essence of the moment.

The beauty of Villa Cimbrone is not just in its stunning views, but in the sense of peace and tranquility it inspires.
Hans-Peter, ever the observant one, pointed out the architectural details of the villa, noting the blend of English landscaping and Italian garden traditions. We learned that Ernest William Beckett, later Lord Grimthorpe, had extensively restored the villa in the early 20th century, incorporating elements from all over the world. The Temple of Bacchus was particularly intriguing, with its statues and serene atmosphere. We even found out that Lord Grimthorpe's ashes were buried there, a testament to his love for this place.
After spending a few hours exploring Villa Cimbrone, we were ready for lunch. We chose La Terra d'Ercole, a restaurant near the Herculaneum ruins, for a convenient and satisfying meal. I enjoyed a Neapolitan pizza, while Hans-Peter opted for the grilled salad. The pizza was delicious, and Hans-Peter seemed to enjoy his salad as well. It was a pleasant respite before our evening plans.

As evening approached, we made our way to Maiori for dinner at Ristorante Torre Normanna. The restaurant, perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, offered stunning views. The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, and the staff was attentive and welcoming. We savored the fresh seafood, accompanied by a crisp local wine. The flavors were exquisite, a perfect complement to the breathtaking scenery. It was the kind of meal that lingers in your memory, a reminder of the simple pleasures of life. I made sure to take several photos, hoping to capture the ambiance and the flavors to share with you all. The view from the restaurant was simply magnificent.

To cap off our evening, we stopped by Viva Lo Re, a local bar in Ercolano. The ambiance was lively, and we enjoyed a glass of local wine, soaking in the local atmosphere. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with beauty and discovery. I always find it fascinating to observe the local culture, to see how people interact and enjoy their lives. It's a reminder that no matter where we are in the world, we all share a common desire for connection and happiness. Hans-Peter and I enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the bar, and we even struck up a conversation with a local who shared some interesting stories about the area.

As we drove back to our hotel, I reflected on the day. The Amalfi Coast had exceeded my expectations, and Villa Cimbrone had left an indelible mark on my soul. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty and tranquility. I was also grateful for Hans-Peter's companionship. His presence always enhances my travels, adding depth and meaning to every experience. It was a day of laughter, shared moments, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the world.
Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the ruins of Herculaneum, visiting Villa Ruggiero, Casa di Aristide, and Sacello degli Augustali. I am particularly excited to explore these sites, to imagine what life was like in this ancient city before the eruption of Vesuvius. I anticipate another day filled with history, discovery, and perhaps a few unexpected surprises. We will be sure to start the day with breakfast at I Giardini di Cesare.
Until then, I bid you goodnight from Herculaneum. May your dreams be filled with coastal splendor and the promise of new adventures.
