Whispers of the Past

Today in Herculaneum felt like stepping back in time, not just to the grand era of the Roman Empire, but into the quieter, more intimate lives of its citizens. It’s a journey that always humbles me, reminding me of the shared human experience that transcends centuries. The weather was beautifully warm, typical for June, making it ideal for exploring the less-trodden paths of this ancient city. Hans-Peter and I set out with a sense of eager anticipation, ready to uncover some of Herculaneum's lesser-known treasures.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at I Giardini di Cesare. The restaurant, perched with a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Naples, offered a perfect start. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air as we enjoyed a simple yet delicious meal. It’s these small moments of culinary pleasure that often become cherished memories.

Our first stop was Villa Ruggiero, a hidden gem that exudes Italian elegance and historical significance. As we approached, the villa was enveloped by lush gardens, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling streets. The beautifully landscaped grounds were perfect for a leisurely stroll, and I couldn't resist capturing the picturesque backdrop with my camera. Villa Ruggiero, unlike the grand coastal villas, has a rustic charm, reflecting its past use for agricultural activities. The architecture, though simple, held a certain allure, and I found myself drawn to the stories it whispered of simpler times. The villa, commissioned by Baron Enrico Petti in the 18th century, later became the property of the Ruggiero family in 1863. Its history is palpable, and it’s easy to imagine the lives that once unfolded within its walls.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Next on our itinerary was the Casa di Aristide. The house is named after a statue of an Athenian politician, Aristides. The house was on Cardo III, and discovered during the Bourbon explorations. This house offered a glimpse into the daily life of Herculaneum's residents. The architecture was fascinating, and I was particularly intrigued by the remnants of the lower floor, which was likely used for storage. Wandering through the rooms, I tried to imagine the families who once lived here, their joys and sorrows, their everyday routines. It’s a humbling experience to stand in a place where history is so tangible, and I felt a profound connection to the people of the past.

Our final attraction for the day was the Sacello degli Augustali, a cultic site dedicated to the imperial cult, honoring the divine Caesar and Emperor Augustus. This building served as a focal point for religious and political life in ancient Herculaneum. The Sacello, commissioned by two brothers, Aulus Lucius and Aulus Lucius Iulianus, underwent restoration after the earthquake of 62 CE, with the addition of the central chapel occurring between the Neuronian and Flavian eras. Archaeological discoveries at the site revealed statue bases with inscriptions dedicated to the divine Caesar and Augustus, emphasizing the building's religious and political significance. It was fascinating to learn about the Augustales and their role in promoting loyalty to the emperor through rituals and public displays. The skeleton of a custodian, discovered lying on a bed in a nearby room, offered a poignant connection to the individuals who served in this sacred space.

After a morning filled with historical exploration, we decided to indulge in a delightful lunch at Dante Osteria. This restaurant, known for its charcoal-grilled dishes and welcoming atmosphere, was the perfect place to recharge. Hans-Peter and I shared a selection of local cold cuts and cheeses, savoring the flavors of the region. The osteria's commitment to using fresh, hand-picked produce was evident in every bite. The owner, Dante, has created a space where passion for food and hospitality blend seamlessly, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Herculaneum.

In the afternoon, I couldn't resist the allure of Cellini Gallery Cameos & Corals. I have always been fascinated by cameos, and Cellini Gallery is renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship. The gallery has a rich history, dating back to 1960 when it started as a small artisan shop in Pompeii. Over the years, it has grown into a leader in the processing of cameos and corals, specializing in ancient Greek-Roman traditions. While I didn't make a purchase today, I admired the intricate designs and the skill of the master engravers. The gallery is a testament to the enduring appeal of handcrafted art and the beauty of Italian craftsmanship.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to a memorable dinner at Ristorante Douce Atmosphere. The restaurant's refined menu, featuring fresh, local ingredients, was a culinary delight. I savored every bite of the expertly prepared dishes, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a glass of local wine. The elegant setting and attentive service made for a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

It’s a place that invites you to slow down, to observe, and to connect with the past in a meaningful way. As we prepare for our trip to Capri tomorrow, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable region and to share its stories with you.
