A Fond Farewell

As my journey through the enchanting island of Saaremaa draws to a close, I find myself filled with a sense of peaceful contentment and a deeper appreciation for Estonia's rich history and serene landscapes. This solo trip was exactly what I needed—a chance to reflect, explore, and capture the essence of a place that whispers stories of centuries past. Today, I spent my final hours in Kuressaare soaking in its last moments, cherishing the memories I've made before heading back to Berlin.

My day began, as most days here have, with a delightful breakfast at the Johan Spa Hotell. The selection was varied, with local cheeses and breads that gave me a final taste of Saaremaa's culinary offerings. Fuelled for the day, I set out to explore a couple of landmarks I hadn't yet had the chance to visit.

My first stop was Legendikivi, a memorial park that exudes tranquility. It's a place where nature and history intertwine, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for contemplation. As I wandered through the park, I learned that Legendikivi, or Legend Stone, is a large rock that was dedicated to the singer Heli Lääts. The stone was christened in 1998 to honor the singer. The park itself is a peaceful area, ideal for a quiet walk and reflection. I found myself pondering the layers of history embedded in this place, and how the memories of people and events linger in the very stones beneath our feet.

A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.

Next on my itinerary was Lymanda Limepark, a charming spot known for its natural beauty. The park has scenic trails perfect for a leisurely walk. The area is quiet and peaceful, offering a lovely escape into nature. I spent some time simply wandering, enjoying the fresh air and the gentle rustling of leaves. It was a fitting way to connect with the natural beauty of Saaremaa one last time.

For lunch, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Ristorante la Perla. Having heard many locals describe it as 'the best restaurant in Kuressaare' , I was eager to experience it myself. The Italian cuisine was indeed a delightful change of pace, and I savored every bite of my pasta dish. The restaurant’s location near Kuressaare Castle makes it a convenient and appealing stop for tourists. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a leisurely meal.

As the afternoon waned, I found myself drawn to the John Bull Pub, a local establishment with a unique character. Despite its British-sounding name, it's an Estonian pub through and through. The pub is known for its lively atmosphere and quirky decor. With its location overlooking the castle ramparts, it offered a great view as I enjoyed a local beer. I overheard snippets of conversations in Estonian, and I felt a sense of connection to the local culture.

For my final dinner in Kuressaare, I chose Vinoteek Restoran Prelude. The restaurant is known for its wonderful combination of wines and local food. The menu features local fish and meat dishes, as well as oysters paired with the perfect wine. The atmosphere was cozy, with calm music that made the evening even more memorable. I savored a meal of local fish, perfectly complemented by a glass of crisp white wine. It was a perfect culinary conclusion to my stay on the island.

As I sit here now, reflecting on my journey, I realize how much this solo trip has meant to me. Exploring Kuressaare Castle, wandering through the town's charming streets, and venturing into the serene landscapes of Saaremaa have all contributed to a tapestry of memories I will cherish for years to come. I am grateful for the opportunity to have immersed myself in the history and culture of this beautiful island. The quiet moments of reflection, the friendly faces I encountered, and the stunning scenery have all left an indelible mark on my soul.

Tomorrow, I will begin my journey back to Berlin, carrying with me the tranquility and historical richness of Kuressaare. While there are no specific itinerary items for tomorrow, the trip home will be a time for reflection on all that I have experienced. I feel refreshed and inspired, ready to return to my work at the Deutsches Historisches Museum with a renewed sense of purpose. This trip has not only enriched my understanding of Baltic history but has also provided me with invaluable personal insights that I look forward to sharing on my blog.

Before I close, I must mention a few practical notes for future travelers. While I packed most of the essentials, I did realize I had forgotten a raincoat and a travel adapter. The weather in Estonia can be unpredictable, and a raincoat would have been useful during some of the cooler, misty mornings. A travel adapter is essential for charging my devices, and I had to borrow one from the hotel. These are small oversights, but they can make a big difference in the comfort and convenience of a trip.

Thank you, Kuressaare, for the memories. Aitäh! I hope to return someday with Hans-Peter to share the beauty and history of this enchanting island with him.

Until next time,
Elza

P.S. For those planning a trip to Kuressaare, be sure to check out the local events calendar. There are often concerts, festivals, and other cultural happenings that can enhance your visit. During my stay, I noticed advertisements for the Kuressaare Street Festival 2025 and the Saaremaa Peony Festival 2025 , both of which sounded delightful. Also, the Saaremaa Museum hosts various exhibitions and guided tours throughout the year , providing a deeper insight into the island's history and heritage.
