A Day of Quiet Reflection

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to absorb more of Kuressaare's serene atmosphere. I find that sometimes the most profound travel experiences come not from grand monuments, but from the quiet corners of a city, the places where history and nature intertwine. It was a day to appreciate the simple beauty around me.

My day began with a hearty Estonian breakfast at Resto HAFEN. The restaurant is close to the sea, offering scenic views. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of dark rye bread with local cheese and a strong cup of coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. It reminded me of breakfasts back in Cēsis, although Hans-Peter always preferred his German Brotchen. After breakfast, I decided to visit the Laurentiuse kirik (St. Lawrence Church).

The walk to the church was pleasant, the town still waking up, the air crisp and clean. The church, dedicated in 1836, stands as a testament to Kuressaare's resilience. It is not the first church to stand on this ground; two predecessors succumbed to the ravages of war and fire. As I stepped inside, the quiet was profound, a welcome contrast to the bustle of the town. The interior, with its simple yet elegant design, invited contemplation. I sat for a while, reflecting on the history held within those walls. I thought about the countless people who had sought solace and community here over the centuries. The church houses a 14th-century baptismal stone from Anseküla church, which burned down in 1944. The carvings are very similar to the Gotlandic Frölje group.

Leaving the church, I felt a sense of peace and headed towards the Bird Gulf Deck.

I must admit, finding it was a bit of a challenge, as it's tucked away, but the quest was well worth it. As I approached the deck, the panoramic view of the Gulf opened up before me. The observation point was tranquil, offering a serene escape. The deck provided a perfect vantage point for observing the local wildlife. I spent a happy hour watching various bird species soaring and diving, their calls echoing across the water. It was a reminder of the simple joys of connecting with nature, something I often miss amidst the urban landscape of Berlin. I made sure to take a few photographs, hoping to capture the essence of the moment.

For lunch, I ventured to omnom sööki & jook, a restaurant recommended for its innovative dishes.

The restaurant had a modern and inviting interior. I decided on a light meal of shrimp tacos, which had a delightful Thai twist. The service was friendly, and the food was flavorful. I must admit, I enjoyed the meal immensely, and it was a welcome change from the more traditional Estonian fare I had been enjoying.

After lunch, I decided to explore Kuressaare raegalerii – Kuressaare Kultuurivara, hoping to find some local art.

The gallery is located on Tallinna Street 2 and is managed by Kuressaare Kultuurivara. Unfortunately, my visit coincided with a change of exhibitions, so I couldn't view the art on display. However, I did learn about the gallery's mission to showcase Estonian art, Saaremaa's professional art, and to organize art education events. The first art exhibition in Kuressaare was on June 25, 1896. It featured over 300 works by artists from Saaremaa. I made a mental note to visit again if I have the opportunity.

My final meal of the day was at the Arensburg Boutique Hotel & Spa.

I chose the restaurant there, drawn in by the promise of local produce. The hotel itself is located on the main street of Kuressaare's Old Town, close to the city center and the castle park. The restaurant boasts a stunning terrace and attentive staff. I savored local fish, cooked simply and perfectly, accompanied by sweet potato fries. It was a fitting end to a day of simple pleasures.

As I walked back to the Johan Spa Hotel, the evening air was filled with the scent of blooming flowers.

I reflected on the day, grateful for the opportunity to experience Kuressaare's unique blend of history and natural beauty. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Legendikivi and Lymanda Limepark. I am looking forward to more exploration and quiet reflection. I am also hoping to visit John Bull Pub.

“The best journey takes you back to yourself.”

I am so glad I made the trip here. Perhaps I will convince Hans-Peter to come with me next time.
