Historical and Scenic Exploration of Ponte de Lima
Day 5: A Day of Discoveries: Mazes, Murals, and Majestic Avenues in Ponte de Lima
Explore Ponte de Lima's hidden gems: from the enchanting Jardim Labirinto to the historic Avenida dos Platanos, a day of culture and beauty.
Lost in Beauty, Found in Ponte de Lima
Today, Ponte de Lima revealed itself in layers, each more captivating than the last. It was a day of gentle wandering, punctuated by moments of quiet awe and the simple pleasures of good food and charming discoveries. Sometimes, the best travel days are those without a rigid plan, where the town itself dictates the rhythm and unveils its secrets at its own pace.
Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Maria Rosa, a restaurant that exudes warmth and welcome. It felt like stepping into someone's cozy living room, a feeling I always appreciate, especially when far from my own in Berlin. I savored a 'brunch recheados', while Hans-Peter enjoyed a hearty plate of 'panquecas'. The coffee was excellent, strong and flavorful, just the way we like it to kickstart our day of exploration.
Our first stop was the Jardim Labirinto, or Labyrinth Garden. It was a whimsical space, reminiscent of the gardens of Knossos, with its terraced design and intricate pathways. I felt a childlike glee as I navigated the maze, the crisp autumn air filled with the scent of damp earth and evergreens. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, enjoyed observing the layout from a slightly elevated point, chuckling as I occasionally took a wrong turn. It reminded me of the small garden we keep in our backyard in Berlin, though decidedly less structured than my little patch of Latvian herbs and flowers.

Wandering through the Jardim Labirinto felt like stepping into a living puzzle, each turn revealing a new perspective and a deeper connection to the serene beauty of Ponte de Lima.
Next, we ventured to the Painel de Azulejos do Mercado Municipal, the Tile Panel at the Municipal Market. These weren't just decorative tiles; they were storytellers. One panel depicted the legend of the Rio Lethes, the river of forgetfulness, a story that resonated with my work as an archivist, always seeking to preserve memories, not erase them. Another panel showcased the bustling Ponte de Lima Fair, a vibrant slice of local life frozen in time. It was fascinating to see how art could capture the essence of a place and its people, transforming a simple market into a historical canvas.

Lunch was at Restaurante A Torre, where we indulged in traditional Portuguese cuisine. Hans-Peter opted for the 'bacalhau', while I savored a flavorful 'filé américain'. The restaurant had a lovely, welcoming atmosphere, and the service was impeccable. It was a comforting midday break, fueling us for the afternoon's explorations.

Our final stop for the day was the Avenida dos Platanos, an avenue of plane trees lining the Lima River. These weren't just any trees; they were centenarians, planted in 1901. Walking beneath their canopy was like stepping into a living cathedral, the filtered sunlight creating dappled patterns on the ground. The leaves were turning golden, creating a warm, autumnal ambiance. I could see why this avenue has inspired writers and poets. It was a place for quiet reflection, a chance to breathe in the beauty of nature and appreciate the simple pleasure of a leisurely stroll. Hans-Peter and I walked hand in hand, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, the gentle sound of the river, and the vibrant colors of the season. It was a perfect way to end a day of discoveries.

Before dinner, we popped into OldStar, a local shop, though I didn't find anything that particularly caught my eye. Still, it's always interesting to see the local wares and get a sense of the town's commercial life.

For dinner, we chose Restaurante a Tulha, a traditional restaurant known for its grilled dishes. We shared a plate of 'Arroz de Sarrabulho com Rojões', a regional specialty, and savored every bite. The restaurant had a rustic charm, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with delightful experiences.

As I reflect on today, I realize that Ponte de Lima is a town that rewards slow travel. It's not about ticking off a list of must-see attractions, but about allowing yourself to wander, to get lost in the maze of its streets, to discover the stories hidden in its tiles, and to find peace beneath the canopy of its ancient trees. It's a town that invites you to slow down, to breathe, and to appreciate the simple beauty of life.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the equestrian side of Ponte de Lima, known as 'Ponte de Lima destino equestre internacional' [cite: ], and visit the Museu do Traje de Viana do Castelo [cite: ]. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the traditional costumes and learning more about the region's cultural heritage. Perhaps we'll even find a cozy spot at Mandala GastroPub [cite: ] for a nightcap.
Goodnight from Ponte de Lima. Tomorrow, more adventures await!
