A Day of Horses and History

Today was a delightful blend of Portuguese traditions, a testament to the country's rich cultural tapestry. From the equestrian allure of Ponte de Lima to the historical garments of Viana do Castelo, every moment was a vibrant exploration. I am thrilled to share the day’s experiences with you.

Our morning began in Ponte de Lima, a town that breathes history. After a hearty breakfast at Lovers Philosophy, where I savored a delightful bowl of fresh fruit and yogurt – Hans-Peter, of course, opted for the heartier eggs benedict – we set out to explore Ponte de Lima's equestrian side. The town is known for its deep connection to horses, a legacy celebrated through various events and competitions.
Though the Ponte de Lima Destino Equestre Internacional event wasn't running today, the spirit of horsemanship was palpable. I learned that Ponte de Lima has a rich equestrian history, hosting various national and international events throughout the year. I imagined the excitement of past competitions, the thundering hooves and the vibrant energy of the crowds. It’s clear that horses are more than just animals here; they’re an integral part of the town's identity. Perhaps we'll return in the summer when the Ponte de Lima Horse Fair is in full swing.

After soaking in the equestrian atmosphere, we drove to Viana do Castelo to visit the Museu do Traje de Viana do Castelo. This museum is a treasure trove of traditional Portuguese costumes, showcasing the intricate designs and regional variations that define the country’s cultural identity.
Stepping into the museum felt like entering a time capsule. The exhibits displayed the distinctive local costumes of the Minho region, particularly the *Traje de Lavradeira* and *Traje de Mordoma*. Each garment told a story, reflecting the lives and traditions of the people who wore them. I was particularly fascinated by the elaborate embroidery and the vibrant colors, each with its own significance. Hans-Peter, with his keen eye for detail, was captivated by the craftsmanship involved in creating these garments. He was particularly impressed by a large loom displayed in the center of the museum, highlighting the handmade production of these traditional clothes.
The Museu do Traje is more than just a display of clothing; it’s a celebration of Portuguese heritage and the artistry of its people.

As we wandered through the museum, I couldn't help but reflect on my own Latvian heritage. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the Latvian folk costumes reminded me of the similar pride and artistry woven into the fabric of Portuguese tradition. It's a beautiful reminder that while our cultures may differ, the human desire to express identity and heritage through clothing is universal.
For lunch, we returned to Ponte de Lima and ventured to Tasca das Fodinhas, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese *petiscos* (snacks) and its rather cheeky menu. The name itself, I discovered, is quite playful, and the menu features dishes with equally amusing names. We sampled a variety of local delicacies, including *pataniscas de bacalhau* (cod fritters) and other regional specialties. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and convivial. It was a true taste of Ponte de Lima's culinary scene. Hans-Peter, ever the adventurous one, even tried the *vinho verde tinto*, a local red wine that, according to him, “paints the glass with its character”.

In the evening, we dined at Restaurante Diamante Azul, a more formal establishment known for its regional cuisine and professional service. The restaurant was indeed elegant, with a hushed ambiance and attentive staff. We started with a flavorful soup, followed by *salmão* (salmon) for me and *costeletas de cordeiro* (lamb chops) for Hans-Peter. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The Diamante Azul provided a perfect end to a day filled with cultural and culinary exploration.

Before heading back to our cozy *Turismo de Habitação*, we stopped by Mandala GastroPub for a nightcap. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and we enjoyed a glass of local wine while reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to unwind and savor the memories we had created.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Granaries of Soajo and the Castle of Lindoso, venturing further into the region's historical and natural landscapes. I am particularly excited to see the granaries, as they represent a unique aspect of the region's agricultural heritage. Hans-Peter is looking forward to the castle, eager to explore its ancient walls and learn about its history. We also plan to visit Boutique Tip Top, perhaps finding a little something to remind us of our time here. It promises to be another day filled with discovery and adventure.

Today was a reminder of the beauty and diversity of Portugal. From the equestrian traditions of Ponte de Lima to the traditional costumes of Viana do Castelo, every moment was a celebration of Portuguese culture. And, of course, the delicious food and wine added an extra layer of enjoyment to the day. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful country and to share my adventures with you.

As I reflect on today, I am reminded of a quote by the Latvian poet, Imants Ziedonis: “*Culture is the memory of a nation, the consciousness of a nation. *” Today, I experienced Portugal’s culture, and it is a memory I will cherish forever.
