Green Escapes in Ponte de Lima
Today, Hans-Peter and I embraced the tranquility of Ponte de Lima, a welcome change of pace after our explorations of the town's historical heart. With the promise of thematic gardens and serene landscapes, we set out to discover the green spaces that define this charming Portuguese town. It was a day of gentle wandering, punctuated by delightful meals and a touch of local shopping – a perfect blend of relaxation and discovery.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Pecados. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, a comforting start to our Friday. I savored a *pastel de nata*, its custard center warm and sweet, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a robust *torrada* with local jam. We discussed our plans for the day, eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Ponte de Lima.
Our first destination was the Parque Temático do Arnado. As we approached, I was immediately struck by the park's serene atmosphere. The crisp November air carried the scent of damp earth and the faint fragrance of late-blooming flowers. The park is a journey through the history of gardens, featuring recreations of Roman, Renaissance, Baroque, and Labyrinth gardens. We strolled hand-in-hand through the meticulously designed landscapes, each garden telling a different story. The Roman garden, with its mosaic pavement, evoked a sense of ancient tranquility.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
The Labyrinth garden, with its geometric design, offered a playful challenge, while the Baroque garden exuded elegance and grandeur. We spent a long time wandering through the thematic areas, admiring the different structures and plant life. It was fascinating to see how garden design has evolved through the ages, each style reflecting the cultural values and aesthetic preferences of its time. Hans-Peter, with his keen eye for detail, was particularly interested in the horticultural aspects, pointing out the various species of trees and flowers. I was more drawn to the overall atmosphere, the sense of peace and harmony that permeated the park. The park is located near the Portuguese Toy Museum, which could be fun to visit if we had our grandchildren with us.
Leaving the Parque Temático do Arnado, we made our way to the Jardim Foral de D. Teresa. This garden, named in honor of Dona Teresa, who granted Ponte de Lima its charter in 1125, offered a different kind of beauty. It was more intimate and less structured than the Parque do Arnado, with winding paths and secluded benches that invited quiet contemplation. The garden was a tapestry of colors, with vibrant autumn foliage painting the landscape in hues of red, gold, and russet. We sat for a while by the river, watching the water flow gently beneath the ancient bridge. I thought about Dona Teresa, a powerful woman who shaped the history of this region. It was thanks to her that Ponte de Lima became a town, and it was in that moment that I felt a deep connection to the past.

For lunch, we chose Restaurante Açude, Ponte de Lima, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Portuguese cuisine. We shared a hearty *cozido à portuguesa*, a stew of various meats and vegetables, a dish that spoke of the region's culinary heritage. The restaurant was bustling with locals, their animated conversations creating a lively atmosphere. It felt good to be surrounded by the sounds of Portuguese life, to be part of the everyday rhythm of Ponte de Lima.

After lunch, we strolled through the town, eventually finding ourselves at By My Love, a charming little shop that caught my eye. I couldn't resist browsing through the local crafts and artisanal products. I ended up buying a hand-painted ceramic tile depicting the Ponte de Lima bridge, a perfect memento of our visit. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, purchased a small bottle of local olive oil, declaring it essential for our kitchen back in Berlin.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way to Recanto Da Vila Restaurante for dinner. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with soft lighting and rustic decor. We opted for *arroz de sarrabulho*, a traditional rice dish cooked with pork blood, a local delicacy that I found surprisingly delicious. Hans-Peter, however, was less enthusiastic, sticking to a more familiar grilled fish. The service was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall pleasantness of the evening.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a final stroll along the Lima River. The bridge was illuminated, its arches reflected in the dark water. The air was cool and still, carrying the scent of wood smoke from nearby homes. Ponte de Lima at night had a magical quality, a sense of timeless beauty that I knew I would never forget.
Today was particularly special as Ponte de Lima is currently celebrating 'Lourear a Pevide' until November 30th. This event promotes the region's Vinho Verde Loureiro, offering it with local snacks in various establishments for a small price. We partook in this culinary celebration, enjoying a refreshing glass of Vinho Verde with a selection of local cheeses. It was a delightful way to immerse ourselves further in the local culture.
Reflecting on the day, I realize how much I appreciate these moments of simple pleasure. The beauty of nature, the taste of local cuisine, the warmth of human connection – these are the things that make travel so rewarding. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Santuario de Nossa Senhora da Peneda and Cascata de Cela Cavalos, I feel a sense of anticipation, eager to discover more of what this region has to offer. I know Hans-Peter is looking forward to visiting baggu's wine bar tomorrow evening as well. Tonight, however, I am content to savor the memories of a day well spent in Ponte de Lima's green escapes. I should remember to buy some postcards tomorrow to send to our friends and family back in Berlin!
As I write this, I am reminded of a quote from the Latvian poet, Imants Ziedonis:
Only those who are not afraid of the thorns should gather roses.
And indeed, our journey through life and travel is about embracing both the beautiful and the challenging aspects, for it is in these experiences that we truly grow and discover the world around us.
Join us as we explore the historic town of Ponte de Lima, Portugal, discovering its medieval charm and picturesque landscapes over a 12-day journey.
