A Day of Discovery in Ponte de Lima
Today, Hans-Peter and I delved deeper into the heart of Ponte de Lima, seeking out the historical and cultural gems that make this town so special. It was a day of serene exploration, delicious food, and charming discoveries, further solidifying my affection for this quaint corner of Portugal.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurande A Cozinha Velha. It felt like stepping back in time, with its rustic décor and the aroma of traditional Portuguese dishes filling the air. I opted for a local pastry and strong coffee, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a selection of regional cheeses and bread. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. I was a bit surprised by the somewhat careless service, as bottles of wine seemed to be scattered around, but the food more than made up for it.
Our first destination was the Solar de Bertiandos, a magnificent manor house located a short drive from the town center. As we approached, the grandeur of the estate unfolded before us, a blend of medieval and Baroque architecture set against the backdrop of the serene countryside. The history of the Solar de Bertiandos is fascinating, dating back to the 15th century and evolving through various families and architectural styles. The central tower, built in 1566 by Inês Pinto, stands as a testament to the estate's rich past.

We wandered through the grounds, admiring the intricate details of the façade and the peaceful atmosphere of the gardens. The manor house is composed of three volumes built in different eras, with a 16th-century house-tower in the center flanked by two 18th-century manor houses. Each section tells a story, reflecting the lives and legacies of those who once called Solar de Bertiandos home. The baroque details and the contrast between the dynamic facade and the sober interior were particularly striking.

Next on our itinerary was the Igreja da Misericórdia de Ponte de Lima, a church with a captivating Baroque style. Located in the heart of Ponte de Lima, the church dates back to the 17th century, with significant renovations in the 18th century. As we stepped inside, we were immediately struck by the serene atmosphere and the intricate details of the altars and religious artwork. The church is not only a place of worship but also a historical landmark that narrates the story of Ponte de Lima's past. The interior features a single nave and a main chapel with a coffered vault dating back to 1638. The main portal, open laterally to the cemetery, adds to the unique character of the church.

After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for lunch. We chose Gaio, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. Hans-Peter ordered the arroz de sarrabulho (a traditional rice dish), while I decided on the bacalhau com cebolada à Gaio (cod with onions). The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect place to savor the flavors of the region.

With our appetites satisfied, we strolled through the charming streets of Ponte de Lima, eventually finding ourselves at Laurindinha, a creative gift shop. The shop was filled with unique and locally crafted items, perfect for souvenirs or gifts. I was particularly drawn to the eco-friendly and respectful products. The shop’s story is quite heartwarming, founded by Telma, a mother who wanted to support her husband during a difficult time. I found a beautiful handmade ceramic bird to add to my collection, while Hans-Peter picked out a small wooden toy for our future grandchildren.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to dinner at Esgadanhado by Chef Luis Lima. The restaurant offered a modern twist on traditional Portuguese cuisine, and we were eager to experience it. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day's adventures and the beauty of Ponte de Lima. It was a fitting end to a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our trip, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes visiting the Caminho de Torres de Salamanca até Santiago de Compostela: Ponte de Lima and the Memorial dos Heróis do Ultramar - Ponte de Lima. We will also enjoy breakfast at Solar do Taberneiro, lunch at Restaurante Mercado, and a farewell dinner at Brasão. To cap off our adventure, we'll visit the S.A. bar galeria for a final taste of Ponte de Lima's nightlife. I'm already looking forward to sharing those experiences with you.
As I sit here, writing in our cozy room, I feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. Ponte de Lima has truly captured my heart, and I know we will cherish these memories for years to come. The blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes this town a must-visit destination for any traveler seeking an authentic Portuguese experience. Tonight, I am especially grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with Hans-Peter, my constant companion and fellow explorer. His presence enriches every experience, and I am reminded of how fortunate I am to have him by my side on these journeys.
