Homeward Bound, Heart Full

As my journey in Cēsis draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mixture of emotions. This trip back to my birthplace has been more profound than I could have ever anticipated. It wasn't just a vacation; it was a rediscovery of self, a reconnection with my roots, and a heartfelt embrace of the land that shaped me. Today, I savored every last moment, knowing that soon I would be on my way back to Berlin, carrying Cēsis in my heart.

My day began with a comforting breakfast at Hotel Zaķīši. While it might seem odd to have Chinese cuisine in Latvia, the hotel is known for its authentic Chinese cuisine, with a chef from China, Ma Tao. The familiar tastes fueled me for my final day of exploration. It was a quiet, reflective meal, allowing me to gather my thoughts and prepare for the emotional farewell ahead. The hotel is located in a scenic area near Raiskums Lake, although I didn't have time to explore there. I enjoyed the strengthening breakfast, knowing I had a day of walking ahead of me. I was able to catch the news on my phone and read about the goings on in Europe as well.

My first stop was the Monument for students in Cēsis Regiment. As I stood before it, I was moved by the tribute to the young soldiers who fought for Latvia's freedom. The monument depicts a student dressed in uniform, clutching a rifle, with an owl and books at his feet. It symbolizes the sacrifice of education for the sake of defending one's homeland. I learned that the monument was first unveiled in 1938, but was dismantled during the Soviet re-occupation in 1952, and then was restored during the Awakening and unveiled again in 1992. The students who went to battle went from the progymnasium to the front lines, untrained. The monument stands as a reminder of the battles for freedom in Latvia in 1919. I spent a few moments in quiet contemplation, thinking about the courage and dedication of these young men. It was a poignant reminder of Latvia's struggle for independence and the importance of cherishing the freedoms we have today.

Sometimes, the most meaningful journeys are those that lead us back to where we began.

Next, I ventured to Svētavots, a nature park and holy spring just outside of Cēsis. The name translates to Holy Spring, and as I descended into the ravine valley, I felt like I was entering a fairy tale. A stream of clear water flowed from the sandstone rock, and the air was filled with the sound of running water. The origin of Svētavots dates back many centuries, and the park is filled with sculptures and art, all created by hand. The water contains iron compounds, and is believed to have healing properties. The park is landscaped with benches and picnic areas, with a hot tub filled with spring water. I took a moment to perform the ancient ritual of receiving strength from Svētavots, walking barefoot in the spring. Despite the cold water, I felt a surge of energy and connection to the land.

For lunch, I decided to try RICCA 11, a charming bistro in Cēsis known for its authentic Latvian cuisine. The bistro combines rustic charm with a modern twist, and the menu features dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I enjoyed a hearty meal of traditional Latvian fare, savoring the flavors and appreciating the cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect place to reflect on my journey and enjoy a final taste of Latvia before heading back to Berlin. The staff was friendly and helpful, offering recommendations and sharing stories about the local area. I was able to get a seat by the window, and watch the town go by as I ate.

This trip has been a powerful reminder of where I come from and the importance of staying connected to my roots. As I sipped my drink, I made a toast to Cēsis, to my family, and to the enduring spirit of Latvia.

Dinner was at Glendeloka, a gastropub that blends traditional Latvian dishes with contemporary gastronomy. The menu featured locally sourced ingredients, and the atmosphere was both cozy and vibrant. I savored every bite, knowing it was my last proper Latvian meal for a while. Glendeloka is known for its extensive selection of local beers and wines, and it was the perfect place to end my trip.
