A Day of Exploration and Reflection

Today was a day of reconnecting with nature and the simple joys of life in Cēsis. It was a day filled with gentle exploration and quiet reflection, a perfect blend of activity and peace. I set out to explore the natural beauty surrounding Cēsis, and I wasn't disappointed.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Vecpilsētas Kebabs. I remember when I was a little girl, my grandmother used to tell me stories about the best kebabs in town, and it seems some things never change! The reviews online were glowing, and I was eager to experience it for myself. It was a popular spot, and I quickly understood why. I ordered a classic kebab wrap, filled with fresh vegetables and tender meat. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of hiking. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia, remembering similar meals shared with family long ago.

With a full stomach and a light heart, I made my way towards the Cīrulīši Nature Trails. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. As I walked, I couldn't help but think of Hans-Peter back in Berlin, meticulously restoring a beautiful old cabinet. He would have loved the craftsmanship of the wooden bridges and the intricate root systems of the ancient trees. I made a mental note to bring him here someday; I know he would appreciate the tranquility as much as I do.

The trails themselves were a delight, well-maintained and clearly marked. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating dappled patterns on the forest floor. I chose the longer route, eager to immerse myself in the landscape. The path wound along the Gauja River, its waters reflecting the sky like a mirror. I paused frequently, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. Birdsong filled the air, and the rustling of leaves provided a soothing soundtrack to my walk. I came across the Cīrulīšu Cave, more of a fascinating hole in the ground than a grand cavern, but intriguing nonetheless. It made me think of the many secrets the earth holds, stories buried deep within its layers. Then there was the Līgavas (Bride's) Cave, or Sarkanā (Red) Cave, which was fascinating to learn about. They say a young man hid his bride in this very cave during the Livonian War. It’s such a beautiful story, and it’s amazing to see the cave still standing after all these years.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

Continuing on, I reached the Spoguļu (Mirror) Cliffs, their reflections shimmering in the oxbow lake. It was a truly magnificent sight, and I spent a good while simply watching the play of light and shadow on the water. I even tasted the water of Dzidravots Spring, which oozes out right from the cliffs. It has been renowned for hundreds of years for being exceptionally clear. Although the sign said the water wasn’t for drinking, I couldn’t resist a small sip. The water was so crisp and clean.

After a good few hours of walking, I decided to head towards the Skatutornis | Green Tower. I must admit, I was ready for a bit of a rest, and the tower promised a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The climb was a bit tiring, but the view from the top was well worth the effort. From up high, I could see the sprawling forests, the winding river, and the charming town of Cēsis nestled in the valley. It gave me a new perspective on the landscape, a sense of the interconnectedness of everything. It was a perfect moment of solitude and appreciation.

By now, my stomach was starting to rumble again, so I made my way to Restorāns FASTY for a quick lunch. I was in the mood for something simple and satisfying, and this place seemed to fit the bill. I had a hearty soup and a sandwich, nothing fancy, but it hit the spot. I overheard a group of locals chatting animatedly, their voices filled with laughter and camaraderie. It reminded me of the close-knit community I grew up in, the bonds that tie people together through shared experiences and traditions. I smiled, feeling a sense of belonging, a connection to this place that runs deep in my veins.

With renewed energy, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping. I popped into FORŠAS DĀVANAS, a charming little shop that sells local handicrafts and souvenirs. I was on the hunt for a small gift for my dear friend Helga back in Berlin. She has always had a soft spot for Latvian culture, and I knew she would appreciate something authentic. The shop was filled with beautiful items, from hand-knitted scarves to intricately carved wooden boxes. I finally settled on a small amber pendant, its warm golden glow reminiscent of the Baltic Sea. I knew Helga would love it, a little piece of Latvia to keep close to her heart.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to Pilsētas Kebabi for dinner. After my earlier kebab experience, I was eager to try another local favorite. This place had a different vibe, more casual and lively. I ordered a lamb kebab, eager to compare it to the morning's offering. It was delicious, the meat tender and flavorful, the spices perfectly balanced. I sat outside, watching the people stroll by, soaking in the atmosphere of the town. The sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over everything, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Rozu square and the Old Man Time clock. I also plan to have breakfast at Martas virtuve, lunch at Studio Pizza, and dinner at Kest. And, if I have time, I might even check out Cafe 7 Bar for a drink.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this journey of rediscovery. Cēsis has a way of getting under your skin, of reminding you of the simple things in life that truly matter. It's a place where nature and history intertwine, where the past and present coexist in harmony. It's a place that feels like home, a place that will always hold a special place in my heart.

I thought about the scar above my left eyebrow, a memento from a childhood adventure in the Latvian forests. It's a reminder of my roots, of the connection I have to this land. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow would bring new adventures, new discoveries, and new memories to cherish.
