Discovering the Giants of Ásbyrgi

Today’s journey was a step into a realm of Icelandic folklore and geological wonder. Leaving the cozy embrace of Fosshotel Husavik, Hans-Peter and I set out to explore the legendary Ásbyrgi Canyon, a place that hums with stories of Norse gods and ancient natural forces. The anticipation was palpable as we embarked on this adventure in the northern reaches of Iceland.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Lókal Bistro. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of Icelandic delicacies filled the air. I opted for the English Breakfast, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a crepe. The bistro was bustling with fellow travelers, each eager to start their day of exploration. It’s always a pleasure to find a spot that offers both delicious food and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the prices were quite reasonable, especially considering we are in Iceland. I even picked up a couple of postcards to send to my grandchildren back in Berlin.

With our appetites satisfied, we drove towards Ásbyrgi, the horseshoe-shaped canyon steeped in mythology. The drive itself was captivating, with the Icelandic landscape unfolding before us in all its rugged glory. The weather in August is generally mild, with daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F). However, the wind was quite strong, so I was glad I had packed my warm, waterproof jacket. As we approached Ásbyrgi, the sheer scale of the canyon became apparent. It’s truly a sight to behold, a massive depression in the earth that seems to have been carved by the hand of a giant.

To walk through Ásbyrgi is to step into a living saga, where every rock and tree whispers tales of gods, giants, and the raw power of nature.

Our first stop was the Ásbyrgi Visitor Centre, also known as Gljúfrastofa. This center is a treasure trove of information about the canyon, the surrounding Vatnajökull National Park, and the geological forces that shaped this unique landscape. The exhibition was incredibly well-done, with interactive displays that allowed us to feel, smell, and even try out different objects. I found the section on the glacial floods particularly fascinating. To think that this serene canyon was once the site of such cataclysmic events is truly awe-inspiring. Hans-Peter was particularly interested in the displays about the local flora and fauna. He is always keen to learn about the natural world, and the visitor center provided a wealth of information.

After spending a good hour at the visitor center, we ventured out to explore the canyon itself. We decided to take a leisurely walk along one of the many hiking trails that crisscross the area. The trails are well-maintained and offer stunning views of the canyon walls, which rise up to 90 meters in height. The canyon floor is surprisingly lush, with a dense forest of birch trees and wildflowers. It felt like stepping into another world, a peaceful oasis hidden away in the rugged Icelandic landscape. As we walked, we kept an eye out for the local wildlife. Ásbyrgi is home to a variety of birds, and we spotted several different species flitting through the trees. I even caught a glimpse of an Arctic fox in the distance, a rare and special sight.

According to Norse mythology, Ásbyrgi was formed by Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse of Odin, who stepped down from the heavens and created this unique horseshoe-shaped canyon. The legend adds an extra layer of mystique to this already magical place. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the scientific explanation: that the canyon was carved by massive glacial floods thousands of years ago. But even he had to admit that there was something otherworldly about Ásbyrgi. We walked to the end of the canyon to a beautiful pond called Botnstjörn. The still waters reflected the surrounding cliffs and trees, creating a scene of perfect tranquility. We sat for a while, simply soaking in the beauty of this place. It was a moment of profound peace, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and connect with the ancient forces of nature. I took several photographs, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. But I knew that no photograph could ever truly do it justice.

By lunchtime, we were feeling peckish, so we decided to grab a quick bite at Fish and Chips in Húsavík. This small restaurant is known for its delicious seafood and generous portions. I ordered the classic fish and chips, while Hans-Peter opted for the grilled cod. Both were cooked to perfection, with crispy batter and flaky, moist fish. The chips were also excellent, perfectly seasoned and not too greasy. We sat outside on the terrace, enjoying the view of the harbor and the bustling activity of the town. It was a perfect spot for a casual lunch, a chance to refuel before continuing our explorations. Fish and Chips seems to be best in the city.

After lunch, we strolled through the House of Arts and Handcrafts. This charming shop is a showcase for local artisans, with a wide variety of handmade crafts on display. I was particularly drawn to the textiles, with their intricate patterns and vibrant colors. Hans-Peter admired the woodwork, noting the skill and craftsmanship that went into each piece. We ended up buying a small wooden carving of a puffin, a memento of our time in Iceland. The store itself felt like a cultural hub, promoting traditional crafts.

For dinner, we decided to try Húsavík öll. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxing evening after a day of exploring. I enjoyed a traditional Icelandic lamb dish, while Hans-Peter savored fresh arctic char. The meal was a delightful culinary experience, a true taste of Iceland. As we ate, we chatted about our day, reminiscing about the stunning landscapes and the fascinating stories we had encountered. We felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world, to immerse ourselves in its culture and history.

As the day drew to a close, we returned to our hotel, our hearts full of memories and our minds buzzing with new knowledge. Tomorrow, we are planning to go whale watching with Gentle Giants - Husavik Whale Watching. I am excited at the prospect of seeing these magnificent creatures up close. But for now, it was time to rest and recharge, to prepare for another day of adventure in this extraordinary land. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty and power of nature, and the enduring legacy of Norse mythology. Iceland, you have truly captured my heart.
