First Impressions of Húsavík

Today marked the beginning of our Icelandic adventure, and Húsavík, with its promise of whale watching and rich cultural heritage, welcomed us with open arms. As an archivist with a passion for history, I was eager to dive into the local museums and landmarks, while Hans-Peter, always the pragmatist, was keen to find a cozy spot for a traditional Icelandic meal. Our first day was a delightful blend of both, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable journey.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fosshotel Húsavík, where we fueled up for a day of exploration. The hotel offered a spread of local delicacies and familiar comforts, providing the perfect start to our immersion into Icelandic culture. After breakfast, we set out to explore the town, our first stop being the Húsavík Whale Museum.

The Húsavík Whale Museum was an absolute treasure. As someone who appreciates the intricacies of history and nature, I found myself captivated by the exhibits showcasing the majestic creatures of the sea. Hans-Peter, with his keen eye for detail, was particularly impressed by the sheer size of the whale skeletons, especially the blue whale. The museum not only provided a wealth of information about whales and their ecosystem but also shed light on Iceland's whaling history. It was fascinating to learn about the research and conservation efforts, further deepening my appreciation for these gentle giants.

Next on our itinerary was the Húsavík Wooden Church, a striking structure that dominates the town's skyline. Built in 1907 from Norwegian timber, the church's red and white exterior and delicate proportions immediately caught my eye. Inside, the warm wooden interior exuded a sense of peace and tranquility. We admired the depiction of the resurrection of Lazarus on the altarpiece, made from lava, a unique touch that blended art and nature. As we stepped inside, the quiet was a welcome respite, offering a moment of reflection before continuing our exploration. The church, with its classic Icelandic architecture, provided a picturesque moment, reminding me of the small wooden churches dotting the Latvian countryside of my youth.

Our historical journey continued at Safnahúsið á Húsavík, also known as the Husavik Museum, a repository of local history and cultural heritage. This museum offered a comprehensive look into the lives of the people who shaped Húsavík. From fishing equipment to traditional clothing, each artifact told a story of resilience and resourcefulness. I was particularly drawn to the extensive collection of photographs, which provided a visual narrative of the town's evolution from a small fishing village to a bustling hub for tourism and whaling. Hans-Peter was intrigued by the maritime section, which showcased the evolution of fishing techniques and boat building in the area. The museum also highlighted the connection between humanity and nature, a theme that resonated deeply with my own appreciation for the environment.

Lunchtime found us at Salka Restaurant, a popular spot known for its delicious Icelandic seafood. The cozy ambiance and friendly staff made us feel right at home. I opted for the fish of the day, while Hans-Peter chose a hearty lamb dish. The flavors were authentic and satisfying, providing a true taste of Iceland. It was the perfect midday break, allowing us to recharge before continuing our exploration.

As the day wound down, we ventured to Geosea Bar, a unique establishment that combines relaxation with stunning views. Perched on a cliffside overlooking Skjálfandi Bay, the bar offered a selection of local drinks and a serene atmosphere. Soaking in the warm geothermal waters, we sipped on Icelandic craft beers and marveled at the breathtaking scenery. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing, allowing us to fully appreciate the natural beauty of Húsavík. The experience reminded me of the spas in Berlin, but with a distinctly Icelandic twist – the crisp sea air and the possibility of spotting whales in the distance.

For dinner, we chose Gamli Baukur, a restaurant renowned for its charming wood-paneled interior and maritime artifacts. The restaurant exuded a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing evening meal. We enjoyed a selection of seafood and grill dishes, savoring the flavors of the North Atlantic. The harbor views added to the ambiance, making it a memorable dining experience. Hans-Peter particularly enjoyed the grilled cod, while I found the seafood soup to be both comforting and delicious.

Before heading back to the hotel, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in the sights and sounds of Húsavík. The colorful buildings, the bustling harbor, and the friendly locals all contributed to the town's unique charm. We even managed to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, a magical experience that capped off our first day in Iceland.

As I reflect on our first day in Húsavík, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. Tomorrow, we embark on a whale-watching tour with North Sailing, an experience I have eagerly awaited. We will also explore the Húsavík Harbor and perhaps find a souvenir at Ísfell verslun. I am particularly looking forward to seeing these magnificent creatures up close and personal. Húsavík has already captured my heart with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I am confident that the coming days will only deepen my appreciation for this remarkable corner of the world.

Back at the Fosshotel, I took a moment to jot down my thoughts in my travel journal, a practice I've maintained since my first trip to the Baltic states. Hans-Peter was already fast asleep, dreaming of whales and geothermal waters, no doubt. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you, my readers. Stay tuned for more tales from Húsavík, the whale-watching capital of Iceland. I hope you will continue to join us as we discover more of Iceland's hidden gems.
