Adventures in the Palmeraie and Flavors of the Medina

Today was a whirlwind of exhilarating experiences and delightful culinary discoveries here in Marrakech. It’s amazing how much this city has to offer, from the serene beauty of the desert landscapes to the vibrant energy of the medina. I'm so glad to be sharing these moments with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Our day began with breakfast at Café Babouche Medina. The rooftop setting was charming, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We enjoyed some traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for our desert adventure. Nadia was particularly excited, chattering about riding a camel like a real desert nomad. It’s moments like these, watching her eyes light up, that make all the planning and travel worthwhile. The cafe's atmosphere was so inviting, with its colorful decor and the sounds of the Medina just below. It really set the tone for a day of exploration. It was a great way to start the day, and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a nice place to eat breakfast.

After breakfast, we headed to the Palmeraie for our quad biking and camel riding adventure. The Palmeraie is a vast palm oasis just outside Marrakech, and it felt like entering another world. The landscape was dotted with palm trees as far as the eye could see, and the air was crisp and clean. The January weather was perfect, with the sun shining and a gentle breeze keeping us comfortable. I was glad I had packed a light jacket for Nadia, as the mornings can be a bit chilly.

The quad biking was an absolute thrill. Lukas, of course, was in his element, expertly navigating the dunes and trails. I was a bit more cautious, but even I couldn’t resist the excitement of speeding through the desert. Nadia rode with me, her laughter echoing in the wind as we bounced along the sandy paths. It was such a fun way to experience the landscape and get a little adrenaline rush. We booked the tour with Palmeraie Quad & Buggy Tours, and they were fantastic. The guides were professional and made sure we felt safe and comfortable throughout the experience. They provided us with all the necessary equipment, including helmets and goggles, and gave us a thorough briefing before we set off.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones that take you out of your comfort zone and into the heart of something new.

After the quad biking, we had a chance to slow down and appreciate the scenery with a camel ride. This was Nadia’s dream come true, and she was practically bouncing with excitement as we approached the camels. The guides helped us mount these gentle giants, and soon we were swaying through the Palmeraie at a leisurely pace. The rhythmic movement of the camel was surprisingly soothing, and it gave us a chance to soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Nadia kept pointing out different things she saw – a bird flying overhead, a lizard scurrying across the sand, a distant village in the distance. It was a wonderful way to connect with nature and experience the desert in a traditional way. The camel ride was organized by Camel Ride Marrakech, and they were excellent. The camels were well-cared for, and the guides were knowledgeable about the area and the local culture.

For lunch, we ventured into the medina and found a charming little spot called Simple Restaurant Marrakech. It was tucked away in a quiet alley, away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Moroccan dishes. I opted for the tagine, while Lukas tried the couscous. Nadia, of course, went for the grilled chicken. The food was delicious, fresh, and flavorful, and the prices were very reasonable. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning adventures. We ended the meal with some sweet mint tea. The staff were very friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Moroccan cuisine in a relaxed setting. I especially enjoyed the vegetarian options they had available. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I was happy to see that they used fresh, local ingredients.

In the late afternoon, we explored more of the medina, getting lost in the labyrinthine streets and soaking in the sights, sounds, and smells. The medina is a sensory overload in the best possible way. The narrow alleyways are filled with shops selling everything from spices and textiles to leather goods and metalwork. The air is thick with the aroma of exotic spices, the sounds of bartering and music, and the vibrant colors of the merchandise. Nadia was fascinated by the snake charmers in the Djemaa el-Fna square, while Lukas was drawn to the intricate metalwork and woodwork. I was in search of some unique souvenirs to bring back home.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Chez Brahim Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. Chez Brahim is known for its traditional Moroccan and Berber cuisine, and the menu featured a wide variety of dishes to choose from. I decided to try the lamb tagine, while Lukas went for the couscous with vegetables. Nadia, being a bit of a picky eater, opted for the brochettes (skewered meats). The food was absolutely delicious. The lamb tagine was tender and flavorful, the couscous was light and fluffy, and the brochettes were perfectly grilled. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with traditional Moroccan décor and soft lighting. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome and comfortable. It was the perfect way to end a long and exciting day. We enjoyed some live music as we dined, adding to the ambiance of the evening. The restaurant was conveniently located near Jemaa el-Fnaa, making it easy to find and access.

As we walked back to Riad Le Rubis, the sounds of the medina faded into the distance, and we were enveloped in the quiet serenity of our riad. I reflected on the day’s adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience this amazing city with my family. Marrakech has a way of capturing your heart and soul, and I know that we will cherish these memories for years to come.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Anima (André Heller Garden) and Le Jardin Secret, hoping to find more moments of peace and beauty amidst the vibrant chaos of Marrakech. We might also do some shopping at Les Nomades De Marrakech-Best Moroccan Carpets and Rugs store. I am looking forward to it!

I am also trying to remember to buy an adapter plug for Moroccan outlets and an extra memory card for the camera. I keep forgetting them!

What a day! I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
