Arrival in Monterosso: Cinque Terre Beckons

After a long journey from Dresden, involving a flight to Genoa and a train ride, I've finally arrived in Monterosso al Mare, the northernmost of the Cinque Terre villages. The air is crisp, carrying the scent of the sea and a hint of blossoming citrus. It’s March, and while the weather is still a bit unpredictable, there’s a palpable sense of spring in the air. I’m here with my friends for an 11-day adventure, eager to explore these famed coastal trails and immerse ourselves in the Italian culture. Hotel Palme, our home for the next several days, offered a serene welcome.

The journey itself was quite smooth, though I did realize I’d forgotten my travel adapter. Maximilian always teases me about my packing, and this time, he might have a point! Fortunately, finding one here shouldn't be too difficult. As the train pulled into Monterosso, I was immediately captivated by the sight of colorful houses clinging to the cliffs, a scene straight out of a postcard. It’s even more breathtaking in person.

Our hotel is perfectly situated, just a short walk from the beach and the town center. After dropping off our bags, we were all eager to stretch our legs and get a taste of what Monterosso had to offer. The village is bustling with locals and fellow travelers, creating a lively atmosphere. I could hear snippets of Italian conversations, laughter, and the distant sound of waves crashing against the shore.

For our first taste of Italian cuisine, we headed to Bar Colpi di Timone Monterosso for breakfast. It was a delightful experience! The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of pastries. I ordered a cappuccino and a local pastry, which was the perfect start to my day. The café had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with vintage decor and friendly staff. It was the ideal spot to relax and soak in the local ambiance.

We then wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the colorful buildings and artisan shops. Monterosso is divided into two main parts: the old town, with its medieval charm, and the newer area near the beach. We explored both, taking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant village.

Lunch was at Ristorante Via Venti - Italian Restaurant Monterosso, a charming place with a lovely view. I decided to try the seafood ravioli, and it was absolutely divine. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the filling was bursting with fresh, flavorful seafood. My friends tried other local specialties, and everyone was equally impressed. The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive.

After lunch, we stumbled upon Pesto Lab Baico - Monterosso al Mare, a small shop dedicated to all things pesto. As someone who appreciates the art of cooking, I was immediately drawn in. The aroma of fresh basil and garlic was intoxicating. I watched as the artisans prepared the pesto using traditional methods, grinding the ingredients with a mortar and pestle. Of course, I couldn't resist buying a jar to take home with me. I also picked up some fresh pasta and other local products, eager to recreate the flavors of Cinque Terre in my own kitchen.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing them fully, engaging all our senses, and letting the local culture seep into our souls.

In the late afternoon, we strolled along the beach, enjoying the refreshing sea breeze. The beach in Monterosso is the largest in Cinque Terre, offering plenty of space to relax and soak up the sun. Although it's March, there were still a few brave souls swimming in the sea. I dipped my toes in the water, and it was surprisingly refreshing. I made a mental note to bring my swimsuit tomorrow, just in case the weather warms up.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Ristorante L'Ancora della Tortuga for dinner. This restaurant is perched on a cliff, offering breathtaking views of the sea. The ambiance was romantic and elegant, with soft lighting and gentle music. I ordered the grilled seafood platter, and it was a feast for the senses. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. My friends opted for other local specialties, and everyone raved about their meals. The service was impeccable, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

I’m particularly excited about tomorrow's hike along the Sentiero Monterosso - Vernazza. I’ve heard the views are spectacular. We plan to have breakfast at La Taverna di Monterosso before hitting the trail. Knowing me, I'll probably take hundreds of photos along the way!

Back at the hotel, I spent some time organizing my photos and jotting down notes about the day. Even though I miss Maximilian and Clara terribly, I know they would want me to embrace this adventure fully. I’m already feeling a deep connection to this place, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the trip has in store.

The evening ended with a sense of contentment and anticipation. Monterosso has already captured my heart with its beauty, charm, and delicious food. I feel incredibly fortunate to be here, exploring this enchanting corner of Italy with my friends. I am eager to share more of my experiences with you all as the days unfold. Stay tuned for more tales from the Cinque Terre!
