Coastal Trails and Culinary Delights: Monterosso to Vernazza

Today was everything I imagined and more! The Cinque Terre is living up to all the hype, and I'm already feeling the magic of this Italian coastline. Hiking with friends, soaking in the views, and savoring the local flavors – it's a recipe for an unforgettable adventure. I’m so glad we decided to start our trip here, especially after the hustle and bustle of getting here from Dresden.

Our day began in Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five villages. We fueled up for our hike at La Taverna di Monterosso. The aroma of Italian herbs and freshly baked bread filled the air, instantly transporting me to a state of culinary anticipation. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of focaccia and cappuccino, while the others chose a variety of pastries. I have to say, after having spent so much time in Germany, it’s nice to have a good cup of coffee again. It reminded me of the importance of those quiet moments before a big adventure, a tradition I always cherish before embarking on a new journey, much like the Lopapeysa knitting I do before any trip.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off on the Sentiero Monterosso - Vernazza trail. I had read that the trail between Monterosso and Vernazza is one of the most popular hikes in the area, and now I can see why! The path wound its way along the rugged coastline, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise waters below. The Mediterranean sparkled under the warm March sun, and the air was filled with the refreshing scent of salt and sea.

The trail itself was a mix of gentle inclines and steeper climbs, but nothing too strenuous. The views were more than enough to distract us from any aching muscles. We passed through vineyards and olive groves, marveling at the ingenuity of the farmers who had carved these terraces into the steep hillsides. I made sure to bring my hiking boots, a decision I was very happy about as the terrain was uneven. I was a little disappointed that I had forgotten my sunglasses, but I’ll be sure to pick some up tomorrow when we head to Riomaggiore.

As we rounded a bend, Vernazza came into view, perched majestically on a rocky promontory. The colorful houses seemed to cascade down towards the harbor, creating a picture-postcard scene that I knew I would remember forever. We took our time descending into the village, stopping frequently to capture the beauty of the landscape with our cameras. I even managed to get a few good shots with my old film camera – something I always enjoy doing, even though Maximilian teases me about it.

Once in Vernazza, we were ready for a well-deserved lunch. We chose Belforte, a restaurant perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. The location was simply stunning, and we were lucky enough to snag a table on the terrace. I decided to try the squid ink pasta with shrimp, a local specialty that came highly recommended. The dish was as delicious as I had hoped, the pasta perfectly cooked and the sauce rich and flavorful. The others enjoyed a variety of seafood dishes, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. I made sure to try a bite of my friend’s pasta al pesto, which was also amazing! I must try to recreate it when I get back home to Dresden. It's worth noting that Belforte is closed on Tuesdays, so we timed our hike just right.

After lunch, we explored the charming streets of Vernazza, admiring the colorful houses and soaking in the lively atmosphere. We wandered through the harbor, watching the fishermen unload their catch of the day. I love seeing how the locals live and work; it reminds me of my childhood in Ísafjörður. We even stopped for a gelato, savoring the sweet, creamy treat as we strolled along the waterfront.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Enoteca Da Eliseo, a cozy wine bar that had been recommended to us by a local. We sat outside, sipping local Ligurian wine and enjoying the company of our fellow travelers. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we found ourselves chatting with people from all over the world. I even practiced my Italian with a friendly couple from Milan!

For dinner, we decided on Il Pirata delle 5 Terre, a restaurant known for its traditional Ligurian cuisine. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and the food was absolutely delicious. I had the seafood risotto, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. We finished off the meal with a cannoli, which was hands down the best I’ve ever had. Maximilian would have loved it; I’ll have to bring him here someday!

Reflecting on the day, I’m struck by how much this area reminds me of Iceland. The dramatic coastlines, the way the towns are nestled into the landscape, and the sheer force of nature all resonate with me. It’s easy to see why Cinque Terre is such a popular destination. The combination of stunning scenery, delicious food, and friendly people is simply irresistible. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings as we explore Riomaggiore, walk the Via dell'Amore, and visit the Church of San Giovanni Battista. I’m especially looking forward to visiting I Trogi Wine Shop; I am always on the lookout for a good wine to bring back home to Dresden.

“The best view comes after the hardest climb.” It was a physically challenging day, but the memories we made will last a lifetime. As I sit here writing, I am already excited for the next adventure and for all the stories I will have to share when I return home. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to connect with the world around me. I think Clara will love hearing all about it when I get back. I might even bring her back here someday!
