Riding the Rails Through Time

Today was all about embracing the slower pace of life and soaking in the breathtaking beauty of Pelion. We embarked on a journey that transported us back in time, offering a unique perspective on this enchanting region. From the rhythmic chugging of a historic train to panoramic views, it was a day filled with unforgettable moments.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Souaré Anelion Pelion. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our adventure. Clara was particularly excited, her eyes wide with anticipation for the day ahead. Maximilian and I enjoyed the peaceful start, knowing we had a day full of exploration ahead of us.

The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly The Train of Pilio, also known as the *Moutzouris* (smudgy). We boarded the vintage carriages at Ano Lekhonia, ready to experience a piece of history. The train, a narrow-gauge railway, once played a vital role in connecting the villages of Pelion. As the train chugged along, I couldn't help but imagine the bustling activity of a bygone era, when this railway was the lifeline of the region.

The journey from Ano Lekhonia to Milies was nothing short of spectacular. The train wound its way through lush greenery, passing olive groves, chestnut forests, and traditional stone bridges. Clara was captivated, pointing out every goat and sheep we passed. Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, shared interesting facts about the railway and its impact on the local communities. The views of the Pagasitic Gulf shimmering in the distance were simply mesmerizing. I tried to capture the scenery with my camera, but some views are just too grand to fit into a lens.

The journey is the destination.

The train made a brief stop at Ano Gatzea, allowing us to stretch our legs and soak in the atmosphere of this charming village. We explored the quaint streets, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the peaceful ambiance. It was a perfect opportunity to connect with the local culture and appreciate the simple beauty of Pelion.

Arriving in Milies, we disembarked and took a leisurely stroll through the village. The cobbled paths led us to the central square, where we admired the impressive church and the vibrant local life. Milies exudes a sense of history and tradition, and it was easy to imagine life here centuries ago. Evaristo de Chirico, father of the famous painter Giorgio de Chirico, designed the Pelion train. Apparently, Giorgio was present during the construction and was inspired by it in some of his creations.

For lunch, we ventured to Meintani (Niki's Taverna) in Zagora. This taverna came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The setting was idyllic, with a beautiful view and a cozy atmosphere. Niki's Taverna is known as Pelion's paradise. We savored traditional Greek dishes, including perfectly cooked fish, kleftiko, and refreshing Greek salads. Clara devoured her meatballs, while Maximilian and I enjoyed a glass of local house wine. The service was exceptional, and the prices were very reasonable. It was a truly authentic culinary experience.

After lunch, we made our way to the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. The drive was scenic, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Reaching the observation point, we were rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the mountains and the Aegean Sea. The cross itself stood as a symbol of faith and resilience, adding a spiritual dimension to the already awe-inspiring scenery.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we decided to unwind at Monk Paradise Beach Bar. This beach bar is known for its relaxed vibe and stunning location. Clara built sandcastles while Maximilian and I sipped on refreshing cocktails. The music was mellow, the atmosphere was chill, and the sunset was simply magical. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure. Madorasindahouse and Innellea have performed at the Monk Paradise Beach Bar. I made a mental note to check out resident advisor to see if there were any events coming up.

For dinner, we chose To Katofli tis Ketis, a local restaurant known for its authentic Greek cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and friendly atmosphere. We enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional dishes, savoring the flavors of Pelion. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with unforgettable experiences.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region with my family. Pelion has a way of captivating your senses and leaving you with a sense of wonder. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Spring Of Manas and the Sycamore of peace square. I'm already looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery.

The little things I forgot to pack, like Clara’s favorite bedtime storybook, are easily forgiven when I see the joy on her face as she experiences new things. And who needs an extra power adapter when you have views like these to recharge your soul?

Tonight, as Clara drifts off to sleep, I’ll be sure to tell her stories of Icelandic folklore, a little piece of home amidst the beauty of Greece. Maybe I’ll even knit a few rows on my Lopapeysa, connecting with my heritage while embracing this new adventure.
