A Day of Discoveries in Pelion

Today was a day of gentle exploration and finding beauty in the small details of Pelion. It's amazing how much charm and history can be packed into a single day when you slow down and truly take it all in. With Maximilian and Clara by my side, every moment became a cherished memory.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at 1701 Wine Restaurant. While the name might suggest otherwise, they also serve a wonderful breakfast. I enjoyed some local pastries with a strong Greek coffee, while Maximilian opted for a hearty omelet, and Clara devoured a stack of pancakes with local honey. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploring.

Our first stop was the Spring of Manas near Portaria. The drive there was scenic, winding through lush green hills. I was reminded of the landscapes back home in Iceland, albeit with a warmer climate. The spring itself was a tranquil oasis. The sound of the water was so calming, and the surrounding greenery was incredibly vibrant. Clara was fascinated by the little fish swimming in the clear water, and Maximilian, ever the photographer, captured some stunning shots of the landscape. We took our time wandering along the paths, enjoying the peace and quiet of this natural haven.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of places, like a quiet spring nestled in the hills.

Next, we ventured to Makrinitsa, known as the balcony of Pelion, to see the Sycamore of Peace Square. The village itself is incredibly picturesque, with traditional stone houses and cobblestone streets. The sycamore tree in the square is truly magnificent – a symbol of peace and tranquility that has stood for decades. We sat for a while under its shade, watching the locals go about their day and soaking in the atmosphere. Clara enjoyed chasing pigeons around the square, her laughter echoing through the air. It was a simple moment, but one that filled my heart with joy.

Afterward, we stopped at Mediterraneo Art Store in Ag. Kiriaki. I was on the hunt for a special souvenir to remind me of our time in Pelion, and this charming shop was filled with handmade crafts and local artworks. I finally chose a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl with a design inspired by the sea. Clara picked out a small wooden toy, and Maximilian found a lovely piece of jewelry for me, a delicate silver necklace with a blue stone that reminded him of my eyes. Supporting local artisans is something I feel strongly about, and it was wonderful to find such unique and beautiful items.

For lunch, we dined at Armonia Restaurant, and it was a culinary delight. The restaurant had a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the menu was full of traditional Greek dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. I ordered the moussaka, which was absolutely divine, while Maximilian enjoyed grilled octopus, and Clara had a simple but delicious pasta dish. The view from the terrace was breathtaking, overlooking the Aegean Sea.

In the evening, we had dinner at O Christos. It was a cozy, family-run taverna with a charming atmosphere. We shared a variety of mezes, small plates of traditional Greek dishes, and savored the flavors of the region. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the simple joys of family travel. Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Limnionas Beach. I am already looking forward to feeling the sand between my toes and swimming in the crystal-clear waters. I am also looking forward to breakfast at O Πατής 'Οινωμαγειρέματα'. I have heard they have amazing local delicacies. Good night from Pelion!
