Day 8: Kyoto's Hidden Gems: Rails, Gardens, and Imperial Serenity
Discover Kyoto's charm beyond temples: a railway museum, serene gardens, imperial villa, and culinary delights await your solo exploration.
A Day of Discovery in Kyoto
Today was a delightful mix of history, nature, and a touch of imperial grandeur. It's amazing how much this city offers beyond the well-trodden tourist paths. I set out to explore a few of Kyoto's less-known treasures, and the day turned out to be a wonderful experience. I had no idea that I'd find myself so captivated by trains, tranquil gardens, and the serene beauty of an imperial villa, all in one day.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar. It might seem odd to start a day in Japan with Indian food, but I was drawn in by the aroma of spices and the promise of something different. The restaurant was cozy, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I opted for a classic masala dosa, which was flavorful and satisfying. It was a pleasant surprise to find such authentic Indian cuisine here in Kyoto. I made a mental note to bring Maximilian and Clara here someday; they would absolutely love it.

Fueled and ready for the day, I headed to the Kyoto Railway Museum. As someone who appreciates history and engineering, I was intrigued to see Japan's railway heritage. The museum is vast, showcasing a wide array of trains, from steam locomotives to the iconic Shinkansen bullet trains. I was particularly impressed by the interactive exhibits, which allowed me to step into the shoes of a train conductor and learn about the intricate workings of the railway system. The sheer scale of the collection was impressive, and the museum did an excellent job of highlighting the importance of railways in Japan's modernization.

Sometimes, the most unexpected journeys lead to the greatest discoveries.
Next on my list was the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. After the hustle and bustle of the railway museum, I was craving some tranquility. The gardens provided the perfect escape. Even in February, there was still plenty of beauty to behold. Although the plum blossoms were just beginning to emerge, their delicate fragrance filled the air. I wandered through the various themed gardens, admiring the carefully manicured landscapes and the serene ponds. The greenhouse was a highlight, filled with lush tropical plants and vibrant flowers. It was a welcome respite from the winter chill. I imagined Clara would love running around here, discovering all the hidden nooks and crannies. I'll have to bring her here next time we visit Kyoto together.

After a morning of trains and gardens, it was time for lunch. I decided to try Oryori Menami, a local restaurant known for its Obanzai cuisine. Obanzai is a traditional style of Kyoto home cooking that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and simple preparations. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered a set meal that included a variety of small dishes, each showcasing the unique flavors of Kyoto. From delicate pickled vegetables to flavorful simmered tofu, every bite was a delight. It was a true taste of local cuisine, and I left feeling satisfied and nourished.

In the afternoon, I had the opportunity to visit the Shugakuin Imperial Villa. This was an experience I had been looking forward to for weeks, as visits are strictly controlled and require advance reservations. The villa is a sprawling complex of gardens and teahouses, built in the 17th century by Emperor Gomizunoo as a retreat from court life. I joined a guided tour, which provided fascinating insights into the history and design of the villa. The gardens were stunning, blending seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape. I was particularly impressed by the upper garden, which featured a large pond, meticulously manicured hills, and several elegant teahouses. The tour guide explained the concept of borrowed scenery, where distant mountains and forests are incorporated into the garden design to create a sense of vastness and harmony. Even though the tour was only in Japanese, the English audio guide was very informative. I could easily imagine the Emperor spending his days here, strolling through the gardens and enjoying the tranquility of nature.
As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Yoshikawa, a renowned restaurant specializing in tempura and Kaiseki cuisine. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a hushed atmosphere that exuded sophistication. I opted for the tempura course, which featured a variety of seasonal ingredients, lightly battered and fried to perfection. Each piece was a work of art, showcasing the chef's skill and attention to detail. The meal was a true culinary experience, and I savored every bite.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Bar K6, a stylish bar known for its expertly crafted cocktails. The bar had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, with dim lighting and comfortable seating. I ordered a classic Old Fashioned, which was expertly prepared and perfectly balanced. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring. As I sipped my drink, I reflected on all the incredible experiences I had today. From the trains to the gardens to the imperial villa, Kyoto had once again surprised and delighted me. It's a city that never ceases to amaze, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
