Solo Adventure in the Cultural Heart of Japan: Exploring Kyoto
Day 4: Whispers of Bamboo: A Day of Serenity in Arashiyama
Journey through Kyoto's Arashiyama: bamboo forests, tranquil temples, and culinary delights. A serene escape into nature's embrace.
A Daydream in Green
Today, I traded the familiar streets of Kyoto for the enchanting embrace of Arashiyama. It was a day filled with the kind of quiet wonder that seeps into your soul, leaving you refreshed and inspired. I set out to lose myself in the famed bamboo grove, but I found so much more than just towering stalks of green.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO. Though it’s known for its serene atmosphere and exquisite dishes, I must admit, I was so eager to start my Arashiyama adventure that I didn't linger as long as I usually would. I made a mental note to return with Maximilian and Clara someday; I know they'd adore the peaceful garden views and the delicious, artfully presented food.
The train ride to Arashiyama was a scenic prelude to the day. As the urban landscape gave way to rolling hills, I felt a sense of anticipation building. The air was crisp, carrying a hint of winter's chill, a reminder that even in mid-February, Kyoto's weather demands respect. I was glad I'd packed my warmest wool coat and a scarf – lessons learned from my Icelandic upbringing where battling the elements is a way of life.
Stepping off the train, I was immediately drawn into the heart of Arashiyama. The quaint streets, lined with traditional shops and inviting cafes, beckoned me to explore. But the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest was my primary destination, and I couldn’t resist its pull any longer. As I approached the entrance, the air grew noticeably cooler, the sunlight filtering through the dense canopy above. I was immediately transported to another world.
The Arashiyama Bamboo Forest was even more breathtaking than I had imagined. Towering stalks of bamboo reached for the sky, their slender forms swaying gently in the breeze. The effect was mesmerizing, a symphony of green and gold that danced before my eyes. I walked along the winding path, the only sound the soft rustling of leaves and the occasional chirp of a bird. It was a welcome respite from the city's hustle and bustle.

In the heart of the bamboo forest, I found a sanctuary where the whispers of nature drowned out the noise of the world.
I took my time, pausing to capture the scene with my camera. Photography, as many of you know, is more than just a hobby for me; it’s a way of preserving moments, of bottling up the emotions I experience in a single frame. I envisioned sharing these photos with Clara, sparking her own sense of wanderlust and inspiring her to explore the world with open eyes.
After what felt like a blissful eternity, I emerged from the bamboo forest, my spirit renewed. It was time to explore another of Arashiyama's treasures: Tenryu-ji Temple. Just a short walk from the bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji is a Zen temple with a rich history and stunning gardens. Founded in 1339, it stands as one of the most important Zen temples in Kyoto.
The temple's Sogenchi Garden was a masterpiece of landscape design. A serene pond, meticulously raked gravel, and carefully placed stones created a sense of harmony and balance. I wandered through the garden, admiring the intricate details and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. Though the plum blossoms weren't quite in full bloom yet, there were hints of pink on the branches, a promise of the vibrant colors to come in spring.

I also ventured into the Dharma Hall to view the famous Cloud Dragon painting on its ceiling. The dragon’s eyes are painted in such a way that they seem to follow you wherever you stand, a symbol of the all-seeing eyes that protect Buddhism. It was truly an amazing sight!
By now, my stomach was beginning to rumble, reminding me that it was time for lunch. I decided to try Arash's Kitchen, a Persian and Indian Halal restaurant that had caught my eye earlier. I’m always keen to explore different cuisines, and the reviews I had read online were promising. I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the aroma of spices filled the air. I decided on a flavorful biryani, and it was absolutely delicious! The spices were perfectly balanced, and the portion was generous.

After lunch, I took a leisurely stroll along the Katsura River, enjoying the scenic views and the crisp winter air. The Togetsukyo Bridge, a landmark of Arashiyama, spanned the river, its elegant wooden structure reflecting in the water below. I paused to watch the boats glide by, imagining what it must be like to experience Arashiyama from a different perspective. Maybe I’ll try that next time.
As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn to the charming shops that lined the streets of Arashiyama. I couldn't resist browsing the local crafts and souvenirs, searching for something special to bring back to Maximilian and Clara. I finally settled on a set of hand-painted chopsticks for Maximilian and a delicate silk scarf for Clara, both reminders of my adventure in Arashiyama.
Dinner was at Sakuragawa, a Japanese restaurant near my hotel. I opted for a traditional Kaiseki meal, a multi-course culinary experience that showcases the best of seasonal ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Finally, I decided to check out Bar Fishbowl, a unique bar known for its tranquil ambiance. I enjoyed a glass of Japanese whiskey while watching the fish swim in the large aquarium. It was a calming and relaxing end to a busy day.

As I reflect on my day in Arashiyama, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. I am also excited about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, and Ninenzaka. I can't wait to see what new adventures await me in this captivating city.
The quiet beauty of the bamboo forest, the serenity of Tenryu-ji Temple, the flavors of Arash's Kitchen, and the charm of the local shops – all combined to create an unforgettable experience. Arashiyama is more than just a place; it's a feeling, a state of mind. It's a reminder to slow down, to appreciate the simple things in life, and to find beauty in the everyday. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I carry that feeling with me, a precious souvenir from my solo adventure in Kyoto.
I’m so grateful for these solo adventures, for the chance to reconnect with myself and nurture my creative spirit. As much as I love traveling with Maximilian and Clara, there’s something incredibly liberating about exploring a new place on my own, setting my own pace, and following my own instincts.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kiyomizu-dera, Gion and Ninenzaka. I’m looking forward to exploring more of Kyoto’s cultural treasures and sharing my experiences with you all. Until then, sayonara!
