Val di Non's Hidden Gems: A Day of Enchantment
Today was a day of exploring the Val di Non, a region that continues to surprise and delight with its blend of history, natural beauty, and charming local culture. Daniel and I set out early, eager to discover the gems hidden within this picturesque valley. I made sure to pack an extra layer, remembering my oversight with the sunscreen, and felt much more prepared for whatever the day might bring.
Our first stop was the magnificent Castello di Cles. Perched atop a hill, surrounded by terraced orchards, the castle commanded a stunning view of the valley. Although it's a private residence and not generally open to the public, we were lucky enough to be visiting during one of the special summer cultural events that allowed us a peek inside. The castle's history is fascinating, dating back to the 12th century, with significant Renaissance-style expansions in the 16th century by Prince-Bishop Bernardo Clesio.

As we walked through the ancient halls, I couldn't help but imagine the stories the walls could tell. The Saletta delle Metamorfosi, adorned with frescoes depicting scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses, was particularly breathtaking. It was easy to picture noble families and historical figures walking these same corridors centuries ago. Daniel, ever the history buff, was captivated by the architectural details and the strategic importance of the castle's location overlooking the Santa Giustina Lake. Though a terrible fire damaged the castle in 1825, the remaining towers and housing complex were a sight to behold.
Leaving Castello di Cles, we drove towards Lake Tovel, nestled within the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Brenta Dolomites. As we approached the lake, the landscape transformed into a scene straight out of a postcard – crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by towering, craggy mountains.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are the ones you stumble upon unexpectedly.
We decided to take the trail around Lake Tovel, a leisurely hike that offered breathtaking views at every turn. The trail was well-maintained, making it an easy and enjoyable walk. I was so glad I had remembered my hiking boots! The fresh alpine air and the serene beauty of the lake were incredibly refreshing. We even spotted some local wildlife, including a few deer grazing in the distance. Although swimming is not allowed to preserve the lake's natural environment, we saw some people enjoying peaceful boat rides on the calm waters.
Lake Tovel has a unique history; it was once famous for its red-tinted waters during the summer months, a phenomenon caused by a specific type of algae. While the lake no longer turns red due to the scarcity of the algae, it still holds an undeniable mystique. We learned more about this phenomenon at the Casa del Parco Lago Rosso, a museum dedicated to the Adamello-Brenta park. I couldn't resist buying a few postcards to remember this stunning location.
After our lakeside hike, we drove to Fondo, a charming town known for its hidden gem: the Passeggiata burrone di Fondo. This unique trail takes you through a narrow gorge carved by the Rio Sass stream, leading to the enchanting Lago Smeraldo. We parked near Piazza San Giovanni and followed the signs towards the lake, passing by the Church of San Martino.

The trail began with a picturesque view of Fondo before descending into the gorge. Along the way, we admired an ancient washhouse where women once gathered to do laundry. The trail then followed the Rio Sass, leading us through a series of wooden walkways and bridges that crisscrossed the stream. The towering rock walls of the gorge created a sense of adventure, and the sound of the rushing water added to the atmosphere.
One of the highlights was the Mulino Bertagnolli, an old mill that is open to visitors during the summer. We also passed by the Casa dell'Acqua, a small interactive museum perfect for families. As we ventured deeper into the gorge, the trail became more thrilling, with narrow passages and a metal staircase leading to Lago Smeraldo. Although the trail is generally easy, it's not suitable for strollers due to the stairs.
Lago Smeraldo, or Emerald Lake, was a fitting reward for our adventurous trek. The small lake, nestled at the end of the gorge, reflected the surrounding greenery, creating a stunning emerald hue. We took some time to relax by the lake, soaking in the tranquility and marveling at the natural beauty of the Val di Non.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped for dinner at Ristorante Tipico Al Dosarel in Sarnonico. This restaurant is known for its authentic Trentino cuisine and warm, welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is located in an old stable, which adds to its rustic charm. We started with the potato tortei with cured meats and cheeses, followed by canederli and ravioli. Each dish was prepared with fresh, local ingredients, showcasing the region's culinary heritage. For dessert, we indulged in a classic strudel, the perfect ending to a perfect day.

After dinner, we decided to check out Accademia del Gin di Linda for a nightcap. I had heard great things about their gin selection, and I was eager to try some local varieties. The bar had a cozy atmosphere, and the bartender was incredibly knowledgeable, guiding us through the various gins on offer. I opted for a gin from the Gin Accademia, while Daniel chose a classic gin and tonic. Sipping our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the chance to explore the hidden gems of the Val di Non.

As we head into tomorrow, we're off to explore more of Trentino-Alto Adige, starting with the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian and the intriguing Piedicastello Tunnel. We're also planning a visit to the Rastenbachklamm, a gorge that promises more natural beauty and adventure. And of course, we have some delicious meals lined up, including dinner at Ai Vicoli, which I've heard has a fantastic ambiance.
Today was a reminder that sometimes the most rewarding travel experiences come from venturing off the beaten path and embracing the unexpected. The Val di Non has captured my heart with its blend of history, nature, and warm hospitality. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
