A Day of Discoveries in Val di Non

Today was nothing short of magical as Daniel and I ventured deeper into the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. We set out to explore some of the region's most captivating natural and spiritual landmarks, and the day unfolded into a series of breathtaking moments and serene reflections. From cascading waterfalls to emerald lakes and ancient sanctuaries, every corner of Val di Non whispered stories of nature and history.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Albergo Ristorante Nerina. Nestled in the Val di Non, the Albergo Ristorante Nerina is surrounded by apple orchards, providing a panoramic view of the valley. This family-run establishment is known for its traditional and genuine cuisine. The menu is simple, featuring dishes crafted from seasonal and local ingredients from the valley. I savored every bite, knowing that the day ahead would require plenty of energy. Daniel opted for a more traditional fare, clearly excited for our explorations. I made a mental note of trying to recreate some of the dishes back home in London.

First on our itinerary was the Cascata di Tret. As we drove towards Tret, the landscape transformed into a lush, green paradise. We parked near Albergo Aurora and began our short hike to the waterfall. The trail meandered through verdant pastures before descending into a dense forest. The sound of rushing water grew louder with each step, heightening our anticipation. Soon, we arrived at the base of the Cascata di Tret, a stunning 70-meter cascade of water. The power and beauty of the waterfall were mesmerizing, and we spent a good while simply admiring the spectacle. The cool mist on our faces was incredibly refreshing, and the vibrant green moss clinging to the rocks added to the enchanting atmosphere. Daniel, ever the photographer, captured some stunning shots, while I just soaked in the moment, feeling grateful for the chance to witness such natural beauty.

Next, we set our sights on Lago Smeraldo. A short drive from Cascata di Tret, this emerald lake is nestled near the village of Fondo. The lake was created in 1965 by damming the Sass stream. The color of the water was indeed reminiscent of the precious stone it was named after. We strolled along the banks, taking in the serene atmosphere and the stunning reflections of the surrounding mountains. The walk around the lake was easy and pleasant, perfect for a leisurely afternoon. Although swimming is not recommended, the views alone were worth the visit. We learned that the lake is a popular spot for fishing, especially for rainbow trout. We took a moment to appreciate the tranquility, a welcome contrast to the bustling city life we lead in London. It's amazing how a simple change of scenery can rejuvenate the soul.

For lunch, we stopped at Ristorante Lusernarhof - cucina di montagna. This charming mountain restaurant is nestled in Luserna, showcasing the traditional cuisine of the Trentino region. We sat on the veranda, which offered breathtaking views of the valley. The restaurant itself is housed in a renovated ancient Cimbrian house, retaining the charm of the past while providing modern comforts. The menu featured traditional Trentino dishes, with a focus on local ingredients. Daniel opted for a hearty mountain dish, while I chose a lighter pasta dish with fresh vegetables. The flavors were authentic and delicious, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. The Lusernarhof truly captures the essence of mountain hospitality, making it a memorable dining experience.

Our final destination for the day was the Sentiero panoramico San Romedio. This scenic path leads to the Santuario di San Romedio, an ancient sanctuary perched dramatically on a cliff. We parked in Sanzeno and began our walk along the path. The trail was mostly flat, making it an easy and enjoyable hike. The path follows an old irrigation canal, carved into the rock face. On one side, the towering rock face loomed above us, and on the other, a sturdy railing protected us from the steep drop into the canyon below. The views were simply spectacular, with the Val di Non stretching out before us. After about an hour of walking, we reached the steep steps that led up to the sanctuary. The climb was a bit challenging, but the reward was well worth the effort. The Santuario di San Romedio is a series of chapels and churches built on a sheer cliff face. The architecture was fascinating, and the spiritual atmosphere was palpable. We explored the various chapels, each with its own unique history and artwork. The panoramic views from the sanctuary were breathtaking, offering a unique perspective on the valley below. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience, blending nature, history, and spirituality in a profound way. Daniel and I lit a candle and took a moment of silence, thinking of our loved ones back home.

For dinner, we decided to try Osteria Te Ke Voi Trento. This restaurant brings the flavors of Sardinia and Tuscany to Trento, blending the culinary traditions of these regions. Located in Piazza Duomo, the osteria has a rustic yet stylish design. Erika and Mattia, the founders, opened the osteria in December 2018, aiming to share dishes inspired by their family traditions and memories. We started with a selection of Tuscan cured meats and cheeses, followed by handmade pasta dishes. The food was exceptional, and the service was warm and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end our day, savoring the flavors of Italy in the heart of Trento.

As we headed back to our accommodation, we reflected on the incredible day we had experienced. From the thundering Cascata di Tret to the tranquil Lago Smeraldo and the spiritual Sentiero panoramico San Romedio, every moment was filled with beauty and wonder. Trentino-Alto Adige continues to surprise and enchant us with its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, where we plan to explore Castello di Cles, Lake Tovel, and Passeggiata burrone di Fondo. I have heard the Accademia del Gin di Linda is a great place to end the day, so I am sure Daniel will be happy about that!

Tonight, I'm especially grateful for Daniel's companionship. It's these shared experiences that strengthen our bond and create lasting memories. As we continue our journey through Trentino-Alto Adige, I'm excited to see what other hidden gems we will uncover together.
