Con Dao's Stories: History and Flavors

Today was a day of deep reflection and delightful discoveries here in Con Dao. It's amazing how much history is packed into these islands, and I felt it was important to dedicate a day to understanding the past. But of course, no day is complete without exploring the local culinary scene, and Con Dao certainly didn't disappoint.

Our morning started with a visit to the Island Chief Palace, also known as the Governor's Palace. It's located right in the heart of Con Dao town. As we approached, Daniel and I were immediately struck by the grand architecture. The palace, built in the late 19th century, served as the residence for colonial administrators. Wandering through the rooms, now a museum, I was captivated by the artifacts and exhibits detailing Con Dao's past, particularly its role during the French colonial era and the Vietnam War.

It’s hard to believe that this elegant building was once the center of a brutal prison system. The palace served as the central headquarters of the island, gathering administrative, judicial, and military power. It was chilling to learn about the 53 Island Lords who lived and worked here between 1862 and 1975, some of whom were known for their cruelty. I learned that the first Island Lord was Félix Roussel, a Lieutenant and Deputy Head of the French Navy.

Visiting historical sites like this always reminds me of the importance of remembering the past, so we can learn from it and strive for a better future.

After the Island Chief Palace, we visited Di tích Bãi Sọ Người, or the 'Site of Skulls'. This site is a somber reminder of the brutal massacres that took place here during the French colonial period. In one horrific event in July 1862, the French killed over 100 people and buried them in a mass grave. They then forced 20 prisoners to dig the grave before burying them alive as well. It’s a truly haunting place, but an important one to visit to understand the island’s tragic history.

It's located near the Chuồng Bò area, also known as the Cow Shed, which was another prison area. This area was first established in 1876. In 1930, the French turned it into a prison for female prisoners. The prison was expanded by the Americans and Vietnamese in 1963, and included 33 cells, two rooms for holding cows, and a three-meter-deep cow manure pit connected to the cow rooms. It was a truly gruesome place.

After such a heavy morning, we decided to lighten the mood with some delicious local food. For breakfast, we headed to TYNA FOOD & COFFEE. It had such a cozy atmosphere, and the coffee was just what we needed to perk us up. I had a Vietnamese coffee, of course, and Daniel tried a local fruit smoothie. The perfect start to a busy day!

Lunch was at Nhà hàng Phố Biển, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood. It's quite a large place, able to accommodate up to 400 people, so it's popular for large groups. We shared a platter of grilled seafood, including squid, prawns, and fish. Everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a true taste of the ocean. Daniel particularly enjoyed the grilled squid, while I couldn't get enough of the prawns. The service was friendly and efficient, making for a very pleasant dining experience.

After lunch, we did a bit of shopping at Hani Bakery 2. This charming bakery and gift shop is known for its delicious baked goods and local specialties. I couldn't resist trying their signature coconut tarts, which were absolutely divine. We also picked up some Bánh Quy Hạt Bàng, Con Dao almond cookies, as gifts for our friends back home. These cookies are made with almonds from the Con Dao almond tree, which has been around for hundreds of years and is considered a national heritage tree.

For dinner, we decided to try MAY BISTRO. It had a lovely ambiance, and the menu featured a mix of Vietnamese and international dishes. I opted for the seafood hotpot, while Daniel chose a steak. Both were excellent, and the service was attentive and friendly. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring and reflection.

As we walked back to our guesthouse, I thought about the stark contrast between the island's dark past and its present-day beauty. Con Dao has transformed from a hell on earth into a tourism heaven. It's a place of stunning landscapes and diverse travel experiences. It’s a testament to the resilience and strength of the Vietnamese people. I thought about how important it is to remember the past, as Con Dao is home to relics such as the Con Dao Prison, which includes Phu Son Prison, Phu Hai Prison, Phu Tho Prison, and the Tiger Cage.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Holy Cave and Bãi Suối Nóng (Hot Springs Beach). I’m also hoping we get a chance to stop by Sea sense bar and grill for a drink in the evening. I’ve heard it’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the sunset. Until then, goodnight from Con Dao!

It's amazing how a place can hold so much sorrow and beauty at the same time. It makes you appreciate the present and hope for a brighter future.
