A Day of Heritage and Natural Beauty

Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Kumano Kodo, exploring its heritage and natural beauty. Daniel and I ventured through the Yoshino Kumano National Park and soaked in the local culture. It was a day filled with serene landscapes, historical insights, and delicious food.

Our morning started with a delightful breakfast at Yorozuya Eatery. This charming spot in Totsukawa is known for its traditional Japanese dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. I opted for a comforting bowl of miso soup and some grilled fish, while Daniel enjoyed a hearty rice bowl. The cozy atmosphere and the friendly staff made it a perfect start to our day. Feeling energized, we set off to explore Yoshino Kumano National Park.

Yoshino Kumano National Park is a sprawling natural wonderland that spans across Mie, Nara, and Wakayama prefectures. It's a place where spirituality and mysticism intertwine with diverse landscapes, from mountain ranges and highland plateaus to river valleys and dense rainforests. As we hiked through the park, I couldn't help but marvel at the towering trees and the vibrant green foliage. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of cedar and damp earth. Although August is technically the typhoon season, we were fortunate to have a clear, sunny day, perfect for exploring.

We followed one of the many trails, each step echoing with the history of ancient pilgrims. The park is home to several sacred sites, and you can feel a sense of peace and reverence as you walk along these paths. I was particularly fascinated by the unique rock formations and the crystal-clear streams that meandered through the forest. Daniel, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out various species of plants and birds, sharing interesting facts about the local ecosystem.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like a quiet walk through a forest steeped in history.

After our invigorating hike, we made our way to the Kumano Hongu Heritage Center. This modern facility serves as an excellent introduction to the Kumano Hongu area and the sacred sites and pilgrimage routes found throughout the Kii Mountain Range. The center offers exhibits that delve into the history, culture, and spiritual significance of the region.

We spent a couple of hours exploring the exhibits, learning about the ancient pilgrimage traditions and the deep connection between nature and spirituality in this region. The center also provides information on the various hiking trails and sacred sites in the area, which helped us plan our next adventures. I found it particularly interesting to learn about the role of Kumano Hongu Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of Kumano, as the spiritual center of the Kumano Kodo.

For lunch, we decided to try Watarase Onsen Cafe. Located in a large onsen complex, this cafe offered a relaxing atmosphere and a variety of local dishes. I opted for a set meal with soba noodles and tempura, while Daniel chose a curry rice dish. The food was delicious and satisfying, and the onsen itself looked incredibly inviting. Although we didn't have time for a soak today, we made a mental note to return for a relaxing onsen experience.

In the afternoon, we decided to visit Toretore Market. This bustling market is a seafood lover's paradise, offering a wide array of fresh fish, shellfish, and other local delicacies. As we strolled through the market, we were mesmerized by the vibrant displays of seafood and the lively atmosphere. We sampled some local pickled plums and picked up a few souvenirs for our friends back home.

The market also has a barbecue area where you can grill your purchases right on the spot. We couldn't resist the temptation and bought some fresh scallops and prawns, which we grilled to perfection. The smoky aroma and the delicious taste of the grilled seafood made it a memorable culinary experience. It reminded me of the local markets in London, but with a distinctly Japanese twist.

As evening approached, we headed to Tororoya for dinner. This restaurant in Chikatsuyu is known for its traditional Japanese cuisine and its cozy atmosphere. We ordered a set dinner featuring local ingredients and traditional recipes. The meal was a delightful culinary journey, showcasing the flavors of the Kumano region. The restaurant's warm lighting and wooden tables created a welcoming ambiance, making it a perfect end to our day.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Kumano Kodo has to offer. From its stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage to its delicious local cuisine, this region is a treasure trove of experiences.
