Whispers of the Lake

Today was a day of gentle exploration around the Mývatn area, a blend of scientific curiosity, historical reflection, and simple pleasures. It’s amazing how much a single day can hold when you allow yourself to wander without a rigid plan, soaking in the atmosphere and letting the landscape guide you. From delving into the research happening here to savoring local flavors, Mývatn continued to reveal its charm, solidifying its place as a highlight of my Icelandic adventure.

My day began, as most days here do, with the soft, diffused light of the midnight sun filtering through the tent. I ventured out for breakfast at Kvika Kaffi, nestled within the Mývatn Nature Baths complex. The sky was clear, promising another beautiful day. Kvika Kaffi was a cozy spot, perfect for a light breakfast. I opted for a traditional Icelandic rye bread sandwich. Simple, yet satisfying, and just the fuel I needed for the day ahead.

With a full stomach, my first stop was the Mývatn Research Station. As someone with a background in marketing, I don’t often find myself surrounded by scientific endeavors, but I was eager to learn about the research being conducted in this unique ecosystem. The station itself was unassuming, but the work being done there is fascinating. I learned about the station’s focus on the diverse wildlife, especially the birds, and the intricate ecological relationships within the region.

The staff were incredibly welcoming, and I found myself engrossed in conversations about the challenges of studying such a dynamic environment. They explained the ongoing research projects, from monitoring bird populations to analyzing the geothermal activity that shapes the landscape. It was inspiring to see such dedication to understanding and preserving this natural wonder. I even picked up some local tips for birdwatching, which I hope to put to good use tomorrow!

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are made not in grand expeditions, but in quiet moments of observation and reflection.

Leaving the research station, I felt a deeper connection to the Mývatn area. It’s not just a pretty landscape; it’s a living laboratory, teeming with life and constantly evolving. My next destination was Kalfaströnd, a location recommended by one of the researchers. It was a short drive away, and the scenery along the way was breathtaking. Rolling hills, dotted with grazing sheep, stretched out towards the shimmering lake. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers.

Kalfaströnd turned out to be a tranquil peninsula offering stunning views of Lake Mývatn. The area is steeped in folklore, adding another layer to its allure. According to local legends, Kalfaströnd is one of the places where you might encounter the elusive Huldufólk, or hidden people. Though I didn't spot any elves, the atmosphere was certainly magical, with an otherworldly quality that sparked my imagination.

I spent a peaceful hour wandering along the shoreline, taking in the panoramic views. The lava formations jutting out of the water created a surreal landscape, and the setting sun cast a golden glow over everything. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, a chance to disconnect from the digital world and simply be present in the moment. I even tried my hand at some landscape photography, hoping to capture the essence of this special place.

By lunchtime, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I headed to Fish and Chips Lake Mývatn. I had heard great things about this place, and I was eager to try their famous dish. The restaurant was casual and welcoming, with a steady stream of locals and tourists alike. I ordered a small portion of fish and chips, and it was indeed delicious. The fish was fresh and perfectly battered, and the chips were crispy and golden. The family sauce, with its hint of curry, was the perfect accompaniment. It was a satisfying and comforting meal, just what I needed after a morning of exploration.

With renewed energy, I decided to do a bit of shopping at Krambúðin Reykjahlíð. I needed to restock some essentials, like snacks and water, but I was also curious to see what local products they had on offer. The store was well-stocked and had a good selection of Icelandic specialties. I picked up some dried fish, a local delicacy that Daniel would probably find interesting (or horrifying!), and some Skyr, the traditional Icelandic yogurt. I also grabbed a few postcards to send to friends and family back home.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Vogafjós Farm Resort for dinner. This place had been highly recommended, and I was intrigued by the concept of dining next to a cowshed. The restaurant was cozy and rustic, with large windows overlooking the farm. The menu featured a variety of dishes made with ingredients sourced directly from the farm, including their own mozzarella and Geysir rye bread. I opted for the slow-cooked lamb shank, and it was absolutely divine. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the rhubarb jam added a touch of sweetness that perfectly complemented the savory dish. And of course, I had to try their Geysir rye bread, which was baked underground using geothermal heat. It had a unique texture and a slightly sweet taste, unlike any rye bread I’ve ever had.

But the highlight of the evening was definitely the opportunity to watch the cows being milked while I ate. It was a truly unique and memorable experience, and it underscored the farm-to-table ethos of the restaurant. I even got to sample a glass of fresh milk straight from the cow. It was surprisingly delicious, creamy, and rich.

After dinner, I took a leisurely stroll around the farm, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning views of Lake Mývatn. The sun was still up, casting a warm glow over the landscape. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of this special place. As I headed back to my campsite, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for tomorrow’s adventures.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure in the Mývatn region. I plan to fully embrace the spirit of exploration by visiting Mývatn and embarking on a hike and bike tour. Before that, I'll stop by Kaffi Borgir for breakfast. And to celebrate the end of an amazing trip, I'll have dinner at Mylla Restaurant before possibly stopping by the Mývatn - Berjaya Iceland Hotels bar for a drink. It's going to be another amazing day!

Tonight, as I settle into my tent, I’m filled with a sense of contentment. Mývatn has exceeded all my expectations. It’s a place of stark beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. I’m so glad I decided to come here, and I know I’ll cherish these memories for years to come.
