Solo Adventure in Iceland's Myvatn Region
Day 10: Farewell, Myvatn: A Solo Traveler's Reflection on Iceland's Diamond
Reflecting on my solo journey through Iceland's Myvatn, from geothermal hikes to serene lakeside moments, a perfect end to a transformative trip.
A Fond Farewell to Mývatn
As my tenth and final day in the Mývatn region draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve undertaken. This solo adventure has been more than just a trip; it’s been a deep dive into the heart of Iceland’s raw beauty, a personal challenge embraced with open arms, and a chance to connect with nature in a way I never thought possible. The surreal landscapes, the midnight sun casting long shadows, and the quiet solitude have all woven together into an unforgettable tapestry of experiences.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Kaffi Borgir. I treated myself to some traditional Icelandic fare, eager to soak in the last moments of this unique culinary landscape. The smoked lamb and geysir bread were particularly memorable, fueling me up for the day's adventures. It was a bit touristy, but the food was good and filling, and the view of Lake Myvatn set the perfect tone for a day of exploration.

After breakfast, I set out to fully embrace the Mývatn Activity - Hike and Bike experience. I decided to start with a hike, eager to stretch my legs and immerse myself in the volcanic landscapes one last time. The trails around Mývatn are truly something special, offering a mix of easy strolls and more challenging climbs. I chose a route that took me through some of the pseudocraters, marveling at these unique formations created by ancient steam explosions. The fresh air and stunning views were invigorating, and I felt a sense of accomplishment with each step.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we embark on alone, discovering not just new landscapes, but also new parts of ourselves.
The afternoon called for a change of pace, so I rented a bike and explored some of the more distant areas around the lake. Cycling through the Mývatn region is an absolute joy, with well-maintained paths and relatively flat terrain. I pedaled past fields of vibrant wildflowers, their colors popping against the stark volcanic backdrop. I stopped frequently to take photos, capturing the beauty of the landscape from every possible angle. One of my favorite spots was near the Dimmuborgir lava fields, where I parked my bike and wandered among the bizarre rock formations, letting my imagination run wild. I could easily see how these dark castles have inspired countless Icelandic legends.
For lunch, I decided to grab a quick bite at Daddi's Pizza. After days of more traditional Icelandic food, a pizza sounded like just the thing. I ordered a large pizza with some unique local toppings, including smoked trout from Lake Myvatn with cream cheese and pine nuts. It was surprisingly delicious, and the perfect fuel for the rest of my afternoon adventures. The staff were friendly and the service was quick, which was exactly what I needed.

As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I made my way back towards my campsite. But before settling in for the night, I wanted to experience one last Mývatn highlight: the bar at Mývatn - Berjaya Iceland Hotels. I’d heard great things about their cocktails, and I was eager to try one for myself. The bar had a cozy, relaxed atmosphere, with a fireplace crackling in the corner and comfortable seating. I ordered a local craft beer and savored every sip, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past ten days. I chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and tips, and felt a sense of camaraderie that comes from exploring a place as special as Iceland.

Dinner was at Mylla Restaurant, a choice I made based on several recommendations. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a diverse menu featuring premium ingredients sourced from local farms. I decided to try the Arctic Char, which was cooked to perfection and served with a creative sauce that highlighted the flavors of the region. The ambiance was lovely, with large windows offering a unique view of Mývatn and its surroundings. The staff were attentive and friendly, making the dining experience all the more enjoyable.

As I sit here now, writing this final entry from my cozy tent, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sadness that my time in Mývatn is coming to an end. But I also feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the experiences I’ve had, the challenges I’ve overcome, and the beauty I’ve witnessed. This solo adventure has been a transformative journey, pushing me outside of my comfort zone and allowing me to connect with nature and myself in profound ways.
One of the things I'll miss most is the sheer tranquility of the Mývatn region. There's a sense of peace here that's hard to find anywhere else. Whether I was hiking through volcanic landscapes, cycling along the lake, or simply sitting by my tent watching the sunset, I felt a deep sense of calm and contentment. It's a feeling I hope to carry with me long after I leave Iceland.
I've also learned a lot about myself on this trip. Traveling solo has forced me to be more independent, resourceful, and self-reliant. I've had to make my own decisions, navigate unfamiliar situations, and rely on my own instincts. It hasn't always been easy, but it's been incredibly rewarding. I feel more confident, capable, and resilient than ever before.
Of course, no trip is without its challenges. I definitely missed having Daniel with me, especially during some of the more challenging hikes. And I could have used insect repellent. The midges were definitely out in full force, especially in the evenings. But even those minor inconveniences couldn't detract from the overall experience.
Looking back on the past ten days, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of the Mývatn region. From the volcanic craters and geothermal hot springs to the lush pseudocraters and abundant birdlife, there's something new and fascinating to discover around every corner. It's a place that truly captures the raw beauty and power of nature.
I’m already dreaming of a return trip, perhaps with Daniel next time, to share the magic of this place with him. Until then, Mývatn will hold a special place in my heart – a reminder of the transformative power of solo travel and the incredible beauty of our planet.
As I pack up my tent and prepare for the journey back to Reykjavik, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for what lies ahead. But I also know that a part of me will always remain here, in the surreal landscapes of the Mývatn region. It's a place that has captured my heart and soul, and I'm grateful for every moment I've spent here.
Tomorrow, I head back to Reykjavik, marking the end of my solo adventure. It’s been an incredible journey, one filled with breathtaking landscapes, unexpected challenges, and profound personal growth. I can’t wait to share more stories and photos from my trip, and to inspire others to embark on their own solo adventures.
Until next time, Iceland. Thank you for the memories.
