Beneath the Surface: Exploring Myvatn's Volcanic Heart

Today was a day of stark contrasts and intense natural beauty. The Myvatn region continues to surprise me with its ever-changing landscapes, from hidden caves to steaming geothermal fields. It’s a place where the earth feels alive, breathing just beneath your feet. Leaving London feels like a distant memory now, and I’m completely immersed in this Icelandic adventure.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi. I opted for their goulash soup, which was exactly what I needed to warm up before heading out. It's funny, I've found that the simple act of enjoying a warm meal can really set the tone for the day. The coffee was delicious, and the staff were so friendly, making it a perfect start before diving into today's itinerary.

First on the agenda was Stóragjá, a hidden gem that I was particularly excited to see. Finding the entrance was a bit of an adventure in itself. I had to navigate down a narrow, vegetated rift, carefully descending the steps that have been carved into the rock. It felt like stepping into another world. The cave is small, but the clear blue geothermal water is mesmerizing. Although bathing is discouraged due to algae and bacteria, just peeking into the cave and seeing that unreal blue water was worth the trek. The contrast of the cool air outside and the warm, almost steamy air inside was quite something. I remember thinking how different this was from the manicured parks I sometimes visit back in London. This was raw, untamed beauty.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking sights are hidden just beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered.

Next, I drove to Námaskarð, a geothermal area that feels like another planet. The moment I stepped out of the car, I was hit by the strong smell of sulfur, a constant reminder of the volcanic activity beneath the surface. The landscape is barren, with no vegetation in sight, but the colors are incredible. The ground is stained with shades of red, orange, yellow, and green, thanks to the various minerals brought up by the steam.

I spent a good hour wandering around, carefully sticking to the marked paths. It's a surreal experience to walk among the bubbling mud pots and steaming fumaroles. The hissing and gurgling sounds add to the otherworldly atmosphere. I could see why volcanologists have been drawn to this area for centuries. It’s a raw, unfiltered display of the earth’s power. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this place, but I know that no picture can truly do it justice. You have to be there, feel the heat, smell the sulfur, and hear the sounds to fully appreciate it.

For lunch, I stopped at Eldey Restaurant. The restaurant is part of Hótel Laxá, and I had heard good things about their Icelandic cuisine. I decided to try the Arctic char, and it was delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the accompanying vegetables were fresh and flavorful. The cozy atmosphere of the restaurant made it a relaxing place to recharge before continuing my explorations. The service was great, and I enjoyed chatting with the staff about the local area. They recommended a few other spots to check out, which I added to my list for the coming days.

In the evening, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Vogafjós Farm Resort. This place is unique because you can watch the cows being milked while you eat. The farm-to-table concept is really appealing, and I was eager to try their traditional Icelandic dishes. I ordered the slow-cooked lamb shank, and it was incredible. The lamb was so tender, and the gravy was rich and flavorful. They also have their own Geysir bread with fresh butter, jams, and cheeses which tasted amazing. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and I enjoyed chatting with the other guests. It’s amazing how food can bring people together, even when they come from different parts of the world.

After dinner, I decided to venture out to Húsavík, a charming town known for its whale watching tours. I was in search of a bar called Jaja Ding Dong Húsavík. Inspired by the Eurovision movie, it’s a fun and quirky spot that celebrates the spirit of the film. I enjoyed a couple of drinks and soaked in the lively atmosphere. The bar was filled with locals and tourists alike, all singing along to their favorite tunes. It was a perfect way to end the day. Who knew a Will Ferrell movie could inspire such a fun and welcoming place?

As I drove back to my campsite under the midnight sun, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the hidden depths of Stóragjá to the otherworldly landscapes of Námaskarð and the Eurovision-inspired fun at Jaja Ding Dong, it was a day filled with unique and unforgettable experiences. I'm looking forward to seeing Grenjaðarstaður - the Old Turfhouse and Vogafjós Farm Resort tomorrow.

Tomorrow, I’m planning to visit Grenjaðarstaður - the Old Turfhouse, and I'm also planning to revisit Vogafjós Farm Resort, this time to explore the farm itself. I've heard they have some adorable baby lambs, and I can't resist a chance to see them. I'm also hoping to find some time to visit the Handicrafts Market and pick up a few souvenirs.

This solo journey through Iceland has been nothing short of incredible. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones you least expect.

I did forget to pack insect repellent, sunscreen, and a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, but I am managing without them. I'll make sure to get them when I get the chance.

I am so excited for what tomorrow brings!
