Solo Adventure in Iceland's Myvatn Region
Day 3: Geothermal Wonders and Soothing Waters: A Day of Icelandic Immersion
Exploring Hverir's geothermal landscapes and relaxing in the Myvatn Nature Baths offers a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.
Fire and Ice: My Mývatn Immersion Continues
Another day, another breathtaking chapter in my solo adventure through Iceland’s Mývatn region. Today was all about experiencing the raw, untamed power of the earth and then finding solace in its soothing embrace. It's amazing how one day can be filled with such contrasting yet complementary experiences.
My morning started with a hearty breakfast at Kaffi Borgir. This family-run cafe is perfectly situated near the Dimmuborgir lava formations, offering stunning views of Lake Mývatn. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. Freddi, the owner, was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the area and his family's farm. I opted for the 'all you can eat' soup buffet, which included three different types of soup, Geysir bread (a local specialty baked in the ground!), and coffee. It was the perfect fuel for the day’s adventures.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Hverir, a geothermal area that I had been eagerly awaiting to see. As I approached, the landscape transformed dramatically. The vibrant greens and blues of Mývatn gave way to a barren, almost Martian terrain of ochre and rust-colored earth. The air grew thick with the unmistakable scent of sulfur, a reminder of the intense geological activity beneath my feet.

Hverir, also known as Námafjall, is a place where the earth seems to be constantly in motion. Steaming fumaroles hissed and sputtered, while bubbling mud pools gurgled ominously. The ground was covered in colorful sulfur crystals, creating a surreal and otherworldly scene. I carefully followed the marked paths, mindful of the high heat and unstable ground.
The stark contrast of colors, the pungent smell of sulfur, and the constant sounds of the earth breathing created an unforgettable sensory experience.
I spent a good hour wandering through this geothermal wonderland, taking photos and simply marveling at the raw power of nature. It felt like stepping onto another planet, a place where the elements were on full display. I even considered hiking up Námafjall mountain, but decided to save my energy for the afternoon's relaxation.
After immersing myself in the geothermal chaos of Hverir, I decided I deserved a bit of pampering, so I headed to the Mývatn Nature Baths. Often referred to as the Blue Lagoon's less crowded and more affordable cousin, the Nature Baths promised a tranquil escape amidst stunning scenery.

The Mývatn Nature Baths are located just a short drive from Hverir, and the contrast between the two locations couldn't have been more striking. As I soaked in the warm, mineral-rich waters, surrounded by volcanic landscapes, I felt my muscles relax and my mind unwind. The water, naturally heated by geothermal activity, was the perfect temperature for a long, leisurely soak.
The baths themselves are quite spacious, with different sections offering varying temperatures. I particularly enjoyed the area with the waterfall, which provided a soothing massage for my shoulders and neck. The views from the baths were simply breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of Lake Mývatn and the surrounding mountains.
I spent a couple of hours at the Nature Baths, alternating between soaking in the warm waters, enjoying the views, and chatting with fellow travelers. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, a welcome contrast to the solitude of my solo explorations. It was the perfect way to recharge after a day of adventure.
Before heading back to my campsite, I made a quick stop at Krambúðin Reykjahlíð, a local shop, to pick up a few essentials. It's always good to support local businesses and stock up on snacks for the road.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Mylla Restaurant, located in the Berjaya Mývatn Hotel. This charming restaurant is known for its delicious Icelandic cuisine and warm, inviting atmosphere. I started with the hot spring bread with cured salmon, pickles, and mustard sauce – a delightful combination of flavors. For my main course, I opted for the Arctic char with leeks, white wine sauce, and trout roe. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the sauce was rich and flavorful. To finish off the meal, I indulged in the chocolate mousse with berry granita and lime foam – a decadent and satisfying end to a perfect day.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of the Mývatn region. From the fiery landscapes of Hverir to the tranquil waters of the Nature Baths, this corner of Iceland offers a sensory feast that is both exhilarating and restorative.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Stóragjá and Námaskarð, two more geological wonders that promise to be just as captivating. I'm also considering stopping by Jaja Ding Dong Húsavík, a local bar, for a taste of Icelandic nightlife. Until then, I'll drift off to sleep under the midnight sun, dreaming of bubbling mud pools and soothing geothermal waters. I am eager to see what new experiences tomorrow brings.
