Adventurous Escape to Samaria Gorge
Day 11: Farewell Crete: Discovering Hidden Gems on My Final Day
Exploring Samonas Cave, enjoying local cuisine, and savoring the last moments of my Cretan adventure with friends. A perfect ending!
Hidden Gems and Heartfelt Farewells
As our Cretan adventure draws to a close, I'm filled with a mix of contentment and a tinge of sadness. Today was all about soaking in the last bits of this beautiful island, discovering hidden corners, and relishing the flavors that have defined our trip. It’s amazing how a place can feel like home in just a few days, especially when you’re sharing it with great company.
The morning started with a hearty breakfast at Rousios. The farm that supplies the restaurant is located on the plateau of Sfakia, near the entrance of Samaria. They are known for their traditional Cretan cuisine, and many of their products are also available for sale. Fuelled up with local delicacies, we set off to explore Samonas Cave.
Navigating to Samonas Cave was an adventure in itself. The winding roads offered stunning panoramic views of the Cretan landscape, with olive groves and quaint villages dotting the hillsides. As an environmental consultant, I couldn't help but appreciate the sustainable farming practices evident in the region. The landscape was rugged and beautiful, showcasing Crete's diverse natural environment. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and herbs. When we arrived at the cave, I was immediately struck by its unassuming entrance, which belied the hidden wonders within. The mouth of the cave opened into a cool, dimly lit space, hinting at the geological treasures that awaited us. Exploring Samonas Cave was like stepping into another world. The stalactites and stalagmites formed intricate patterns, illuminated by the soft light that filtered through openings in the cave ceiling. The silence was broken only by the occasional drip of water, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and mystery. I found myself marveling at the natural processes that had shaped these formations over thousands of years, a tangible reminder of the earth's ancient history. It was a serene and awe-inspiring experience, a perfect contrast to the rugged beauty of the Samaria Gorge we had conquered earlier in our trip. David, ever the curious engineer, was fascinated by the cave's structure and the way the light played on the rock formations. He kept snapping photos, trying to capture the perfect shot of a particularly striking stalactite. Meanwhile, the others were busy exploring different chambers, their voices echoing softly through the cave. We spent a good hour wandering through the cave, each of us lost in our own thoughts and discoveries. It was a peaceful, almost meditative experience, a chance to connect with nature in a profound way.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found in the most unexpected places.
After our subterranean adventure, we drove towards the coast, eager to see the famed Elephant Rock. The drive itself was a treat, with the azure waters of the Mediterranean sparkling in the distance. When we finally arrived at Elephant Rock, I was immediately captivated by its unique shape. Perched on the edge of the sea, this natural rock formation truly resembled a giant elephant dipping its trunk into the water. It was a whimsical and picturesque sight, a testament to the creative power of nature. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos, trying to capture the perfect angle that highlighted the rock's distinctive shape. The surrounding coastline was equally stunning, with rugged cliffs and hidden coves adding to the area's charm. The sea was a brilliant shade of turquoise, inviting us to take a refreshing dip. The air was filled with the salty scent of the ocean and the sound of crashing waves, creating a sensory symphony that invigorated the soul. As we stood there, admiring the view, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys in life. The Elephant Cave, found in the Drepano area of Akrotiri, near Chania, gets its name from the elephant bones embedded in the cave walls. The species of elephant, known as 'Elephas chaiensis,' lived approximately 50-60 thousand years ago. Deer bones from both regular-sized and dwarf deer have also been discovered in the cave.

As I sit here now, writing this final entry, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Crete has captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality. And sharing it all with my friends has made it even more special. I’m already dreaming of our next adventure together, wherever that may be. Though this trip is coming to an end, I'm incredibly grateful for the memories made and the bonds strengthened. Reflecting on our time here, I realize that the true essence of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in the connections we forge and the experiences we share. As David always says, it's the people you're with that make a trip truly unforgettable. And he's absolutely right. I am excited to return home to Berlin, where I will be reunited with David. While I am eager to share my travel stories with him, I also look forward to resuming my work as an environmental consultant and contributing to sustainable initiatives in my community. I am also excited to get back to my hobbies, such as exploring Berlin's parks, visiting local farmers' markets, and baking traditional German cakes. These activities help me stay grounded and connected to my community, balancing my love for travel with a sense of belonging and purpose. It's this balance that allows me to fully appreciate both the excitement of exploring new places and the comfort of returning home.
Tomorrow, we bid farewell to this enchanting island. But I know that a part of me will always remain here, wandering through the gorges, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and savoring the flavors of Crete. Until next time…
