As our Samaria Gorge adventure nears its end, I wanted to soak in every last bit of Crete's magic. Today was all about exploring hidden caves, relaxing on serene beaches, and indulging in the local flavors of Agia Roumeli. It's amazing how much this island has to offer beyond the well-trodden tourist paths.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Pension Paradise, a cozy spot known for its warm hospitality and homemade dishes. Maria and Georgios, the owners, always make you feel like family, and their breakfast spread is the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. With full stomachs and eager hearts, David and I set off to discover Zarana's Caves.

The drive to Zarana's Caves was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of the Cretan landscape. The caves are located in the picturesque region of Sfakia, and the hike to reach them was moderate, perfect for enjoying the crisp December air. The trail led us through rugged terrain, unveiling spectacular rock formations and captivating views at every turn.

Inside Zarana's Caves, we were greeted by a mesmerizing display of stalactites and stalagmites, formed over centuries. The intricate formations created a surreal atmosphere, and it was easy to get lost in the beauty of this hidden gem. The caves are home to diverse flora and fauna, adding to the natural wonder of the site.

After our subterranean adventure, we were ready for some sun and sea. We headed to Akrogiali Beach, a serene haven known for its crystal-clear waters and tranquil atmosphere. Even in December, the beach was inviting, with the gentle sound of waves creating a soothing backdrop. David and I spent a relaxing couple of hours strolling along the shore, collecting seashells, and simply enjoying the peace and quiet.

Akrogiali Beach is near Malia, known for its vibrant resort atmosphere. Though we didn't explore the town extensively, the beach itself was a perfect escape from the crowds. I could imagine spending an entire day here during the warmer months, swimming in the turquoise waters and soaking up the Mediterranean sun.

As the day progressed, our stomachs started to rumble, and we made our way back to Agia Roumeli for lunch at Rousios. This taverna is a local favorite, known for its authentic Greek cuisine and fresh ingredients. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

I decided to try the moussaka, a classic Greek dish, while David opted for grilled fish, both were delicious. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.

Before dinner, I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs and local products. I found a charming shop called Nature - Cretan natural products. This store offered a wide array of Cretan delights, from olive oil and honey to herbal teas and natural cosmetics. I couldn't resist buying some thyme honey, a local specialty, and a few olive oil soaps for friends back in Berlin. Supporting local businesses is important to me, and it's a great way to take a piece of Crete home with us.

For our final dinner in Agia Roumeli, we chose SAMARIA restaurant. This restaurant is known for its traditional Greek cuisine and vibrant atmosphere. We started with a selection of mezes, small plates perfect for sharing, including dolma and kefte. For our main courses, I had the lamb and David had seafood. The food was exceptional, and the portions were generous.

As we savored our meal, we reminisced about our incredible journey through the Samaria Gorge. It's hard to believe that tomorrow is our last day in Crete. This trip has been an incredible blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful island with David and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, before we head back to Berlin, we plan to visit Samonas Cave and Elephant Rock. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Crete has in store for us.

Before heading back to Pension Paradise, we took a stroll along the beach, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The stars were out, and the sound of the waves was incredibly soothing. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and relaxation. I'm already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever it may be.
