Echoes of the Past in Vilcabamba

Today was a day of delving into the heart of Vilcabamba, a place where the past feels incredibly present. The air is thick with history, and every stone seems to whisper stories of the Inca civilization. It’s a privilege to walk these paths, to try and understand the lives and legacies of those who came before us. And of course, to share it all with my friends makes it even more special.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tres Keros. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic vibe, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which was delicious and filling. It's amazing how food can connect you to a place; each bite felt like a small lesson in Peruvian culture. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back in Lyon – Jean-Pierre and Sophie would love it!

After breakfast, we set out to explore the Templo de Vilcabamba. The temple is an amazing site, with intricate stonework that speaks volumes about the skills of ancient civilizations. As we wandered through the grounds, I found myself lost in thought, imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago. The views of the surrounding Andean mountains were breathtaking, providing a serene backdrop for contemplation.

The temple itself was built on what was once an Inca ceremonial site. It's fascinating to see how different cultures layered their beliefs and traditions on top of each other, creating a unique blend of history. I tried to picture the ceremonies that might have taken place here, the rituals and celebrations that marked the lives of the people who called this place home. I am always amazed by how much we can learn from the past if we just take the time to listen.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

After soaking in the history of the temple, it was time for lunch. We headed to Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer, a place that promised both delicious food and local brews. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and we were lucky to snag a table. I decided to try the alpaca steak, a local specialty, while some of my friends opted for the trout ceviche. Everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the quality of Peruvian cuisine. And the craft beer? Absolutely fantastic! It was the perfect way to unwind after a morning of exploring.

As we ate, we chatted about our favorite moments from the trip so far. We have been laughing a lot, sharing stories, and creating memories that I know we’ll cherish for years to come. Travel is so much more than just seeing new places; it’s about connecting with people, both those we travel with and those we meet along the way.

In the late afternoon, we decided to embrace the local nightlife and visited Murcia Club. Now, I know what you might be thinking: Emily, a freelance translator from Lyon, in a club? But hey, I like to step out of my comfort zone every now and then! The atmosphere was lively and energetic, and it was fun to see how the locals let loose and enjoy themselves. We danced, we laughed, and we even tried our hand at some local dance moves (with varying degrees of success!). It was a great way to end the day and experience a different side of Vilcabamba.

For dinner, we chose Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. The restaurant is known for its high-quality, wide-ranging craft beer menu, but also its culinary attention. The atmosphere was casual; service top-notch. I chose the Cuy, while my friend chose the Alapaca con Salsa de Guindones.

As the day winds down, I find myself reflecting on the beauty and history that Vilcabamba has offered. The weather in December is quite pleasant, with daytime temperatures around 22°C, though packing a poncho is a good idea, just in case of rain.

Tomorrow, we plan to continue our exploration of Vilcabamba. There's still so much to see and discover. We plan to have breakfast at Hacienda Huayoccari, lunch at Hostería Paraíso Vilcabamba, and dinner at Healthy & Tasty. In between meals, we are planning to visit EKEKOS SAN BLAS -art & COLORS to do some shopping. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue sharing this incredible journey with all of you.

Before heading to bed, I spent some time writing in my travel journal, capturing the day’s experiences and reflections. It’s a practice I started years ago, and I find it to be a wonderful way to preserve memories and make sense of my travels. As I wrote, I realized how grateful I am for this opportunity to explore Peru with my friends. It’s a journey that is enriching my life in ways I never could have imagined.

And with that, I bid you goodnight from Vilcabamba. Stay tuned for more adventures tomorrow!

P.S. I almost forgot to mention! I did manage to find a small shop selling portable solar chargers, so I’m all set on that front. Now, if only I could find an extra pair of trekking poles…
