Reaching New Heights
Today was a day of incredible physical challenges and stunning natural beauty on the Vilcabamba Trek. Setting out to cross Paso Trapecio, one of the highest points on our journey, I knew it would be demanding, but the views and experiences along the way made every step worthwhile. From enjoying local flavors to discovering unique eco-friendly spots, today was a true testament to the spirit of adventure.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Green House. It was a delightful surprise to find such a cozy spot offering a variety of options. I opted for the vegetarian breakfast, which included fresh fruit, homemade bread, and local coffee. Sipping that first cup while watching the sunrise over the Andean mountains was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's trek. It reminded me of the simple pleasures I often miss back in Lyon, like the fresh croissants from our local boulangerie. The Green House sources ingredients from local homegrown farmers.

With our backpacks packed and spirits high, we set off towards Paso Trapecio -- Huayhuash. The ascent was challenging, and the altitude definitely made it harder to breathe, but the panoramic views kept us motivated. The landscape was breathtaking, with snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, and rugged terrain stretching as far as the eye could see. I couldn't help but think of Jean-Pierre and Sophie, imagining their faces if they could see this view. I made a mental note to bring them back to Peru someday, perhaps when Sophie is a bit older and can appreciate the trek more.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Reaching the summit of Paso Trapecio was an exhilarating experience. The sense of accomplishment was immense, and the views were simply unparalleled. We spent some time at the top, taking photos and soaking in the majestic scenery. The crisp mountain air and the silence, broken only by the occasional gust of wind, created a serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere. I felt so grateful for this opportunity to connect with nature and push myself beyond my comfort zone.
After descending from Paso Trapecio, we stopped for lunch at Restaurant Katherine. This local eatery offered a variety of traditional Peruvian dishes. I decided to try the trout, which was fresh and flavorful, perfectly seasoned with local herbs and spices. It was a great way to replenish our energy after the demanding hike. Sharing stories and laughter with my friends over lunch made the experience even more enjoyable. The warmth and hospitality of the locals reminded me of the sense of community I cherish back in Lyon.

In the afternoon, we visited the Eco-Resort Izhcayluma. This unique place was a welcome change of pace after the strenuous trek. The resort is known for its commitment to sustainability and offers a variety of activities, including yoga classes, horseback riding, and hiking trails. I took a leisurely stroll through the gardens, admiring the lush vegetation and vibrant flowers. The Eco-Resort Izhcayluma offers panoramic views, a cocktail bar with bonfire, Yoga studios, swimming pool with waterfall and massage and beauty care. I also spent some time relaxing by the pool, enjoying the peaceful ambiance of the resort. It was a perfect way to unwind and recharge before the final leg of our trek.

For dinner, we dined at Sol del Venado, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine and cozy atmosphere. I savored the flavors of the local dishes, each bite telling a story of Peru's rich culinary heritage. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, with soft lighting and rustic decor. The friendly staff made us feel right at home, sharing stories and recommendations about the local area. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with adventure and discovery.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible part of the world. The Vilcabamba Trek has been a journey of self-discovery, pushing me to new limits and opening my eyes to the beauty and wonder of nature. I am excited about what tomorrow will bring as we explore the Templo de Vilcabamba. I am also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Tres Keros, Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer, and Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. And perhaps, we'll unwind at Murcia Club. I can't wait to share more stories from our adventure!
The trek through Vilcabamba is turning out to be quite a journey and I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, knowing that each day here is a unique gift. I am so grateful to be experiencing this with my friends, and I know these are memories we will cherish for a lifetime. And I am sure Jean-Pierre and Sophie are having a wonderful time celebrating Christmas in Lyon.
I've realized on this trip that it's important to be prepared for anything, even if it means forgetting a portable solar charger. However, I am making the most of what I have, and I am grateful for every moment of this incredible journey.
I am excited to continue this adventure, embracing the challenges and celebrating the triumphs along the way. Until tomorrow, dear readers!
