The Final Ascent & Sweet Reflections

As the sun began its ascent, casting a golden glow over the Andean peaks, I knew this was it – the final day of our Vilcabamba adventure. A mix of emotions swirled within me: pride in what we'd accomplished, a tinge of sadness that it was ending, and a surge of excitement for the challenges that lay ahead today. San Antonio Pass, the last major hurdle, awaited, promising breathtaking views and a sense of ultimate accomplishment. Little did I know, the day would be filled with not just physical triumphs, but also moments of profound reflection on the journey we had undertaken.

The morning started, as usual, with the familiar ritual of packing up our gear. My friends and I had become quite efficient at this, a well-oiled machine honed by twelve days of practice. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast at Green House, a local spot that fueled us up with some delicious Peruvian coffee and warm bread, setting the tone for the day. The air was crisp and cold, a stark reminder of the altitude, but the anticipation of reaching San Antonio Pass kept our spirits high.

As we started our trek, the trail wound upwards, becoming steeper with each step. The landscape was rugged and raw, the mountains standing tall and imposing. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of nature around us. Every now and then, we would pause, catch our breath, and take in the panoramic views that stretched out before us. The valleys below were a tapestry of green and brown, dotted with small villages and winding rivers. I thought of Jean-Pierre and Sophie back in Lyon, wondering what they were doing at that very moment. I missed them dearly, but I also knew that this adventure was something I needed to do for myself, a chance to reconnect with nature and push my own boundaries.

The ascent to San Antonio Pass was challenging, no doubt about it. The altitude made each breath a conscious effort, and my muscles screamed in protest with every step. But with my friends by my side, we pushed on, encouraging each other, sharing stories and laughter to distract from the physical strain. We had become a tight-knit group over the past two weeks, our shared experiences forging a bond that I knew would last long after we returned home. I was so glad that I decided to do this trek with friends, it made the experience so much more enjoyable.

Finally, after hours of relentless climbing, we reached the summit of San Antonio Pass. The view was simply breathtaking. A vast expanse of snow-capped peaks stretched out in every direction, the sky a brilliant blue overhead. It felt like we were on top of the world, a small group of adventurers who had conquered the Andes. We spent a few moments at the summit, taking photos and simply soaking in the beauty around us. There was a sense of quiet satisfaction, a feeling of accomplishment that washed over me. We had done it. We had completed the Vilcabamba Trek.

Sometimes, the greatest journeys are not just about reaching a destination, but about the person you become along the way.

The descent from San Antonio Pass was almost as challenging as the ascent, the steep and rocky terrain testing our knees and ankles. But we were buoyed by the knowledge that the end was near, and that a warm meal and a comfortable bed awaited us. We stopped for lunch at Restaurant Katherine, a charming spot known for its fresh, local ingredients. The food was delicious and comforting, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to refuel and recharge before the final leg of our journey.

After lunch, we made a detour to Cascada EL PALTO, a hidden gem recommended by a local we met along the trail. It was a short but steep hike to reach the waterfall, but the effort was well worth it. The cascade was a sight to behold, a torrent of water cascading down a rocky mountain face, surrounded by lush greenery. We took some photos and enjoyed the refreshing mist before heading back to the trail.

As the day drew to a close, we arrived at Hacienda Huayoccari, where we had planned our celebratory final dinner. The hacienda was a beautiful colonial estate, with stunning views of the Sacred Valley. We were greeted with warm hospitality and treated to a delicious meal of traditional Peruvian cuisine. The atmosphere was festive and joyful, as we shared stories and memories from our adventure. It felt like the perfect way to end our Vilcabamba journey.

During dinner, I reflected on the past thirteen days. We had faced challenges, overcome obstacles, and pushed ourselves to our limits. We had seen breathtaking landscapes, explored ancient ruins, and immersed ourselves in the local culture. But most importantly, we had grown as individuals and as a group. The Vilcabamba Trek had been more than just a physical journey; it had been a journey of self-discovery and transformation.

As I savored the last bite of my dessert – a delicate custard apple meringue – I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences I had had and the people I had shared them with. The Vilcabamba Trek had been an unforgettable adventure, one that I would cherish for the rest of my life. I was also grateful that I hadn't forgotten any of my trip essentials, especially my camera, which allowed me to capture all these amazing memories. I was a little bummed that I forgot my portable solar charger and an extra pair of trekking poles, but I managed without them.

Tomorrow, we would begin our journey back to Cusco, and then onwards to our respective homes. But a part of me would always remain in the Andes, among the towering peaks and the ancient trails of the Vilcabamba. This trek taught me a lot about myself, about friendship, and about the power of nature to heal and inspire. As I prepare to return to my life in Lyon, I know that I will carry these lessons with me, and that they will shape the person I become in the years to come. I am looking forward to seeing Jean-Pierre and Sophie again and sharing my stories with them. I am also excited to plan our next family adventure, perhaps somewhere closer to home, but equally as enriching and transformative.

As I close this chapter of my travel blog, I want to thank you, my readers, for joining me on this incredible journey. I hope that my experiences have inspired you to embark on your own adventures, to explore the world and discover the beauty that lies within and around you. Until next time, happy travels!
