Snæfellsnes Adventures: Kirkjufell, Waterfalls, and Lava Fields
Today was a day of iconic landscapes and intriguing stories as I continued my solo journey through Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The weather was kind, offering clear skies that perfectly framed the dramatic scenery. With a full itinerary, I set out early, eager to explore the natural wonders that this region is so famous for. Today was a reminder of why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace and fully immerse myself in the surroundings.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Hotel Langaholt & Restaurant. The hotel was conveniently located, and the buffet was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. I enjoyed some eggs, local bread, and strong coffee, all while enjoying the view of the surrounding landscape. The staff was very friendly, and I overheard them speaking German to some other guests, which made me feel a little closer to home.

My first stop was the majestic Kirkjufell Mountain, often referred to as the most photographed mountain in Iceland. As I approached, its distinctive shape dominated the horizon, living up to its reputation. The name Kirkjufell means Church Mountain, because it resembles a church. I parked the car and took a moment to simply admire its beauty. It's easy to see why this mountain is so popular; its isolated position and the way it rises from the ocean makes it a unique landmark. I walked around the surrounding area, taking in the different views of the mountain. The colors of the mountain change every season, from summer greens to winter whites.

Just a short walk from Kirkjufell is Kirkjufellsfossar, a series of three small, but picturesque waterfalls. The waterfalls cascade down the Kirkjufellsá river with Kirkjufell in the background, creating a stunning vista. I joined other photographers, tripods in hand, trying to capture the perfect shot. The path down to the best viewpoint was easily accessible, and I spent a good hour simply enjoying the scenery. The staff at Guide to Iceland calls this mountain Iurie Belegurschi's mountain, as he has taken the most beautiful photos of Mt. Kirkjufell.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are the ones that unexpectedly appear around the bend, reminding us of the raw, untamed beauty of our planet.
After soaking in the beauty of Kirkjufell and its waterfalls, I drove towards Berserkjahraun, an ancient lava field with a fascinating history. The drive itself was scenic, with the road winding through the rugged landscape. As I arrived at Berserkjahraun, I was immediately struck by the stark contrast of the black lava rock covered in vibrant green moss. It felt like stepping onto another planet.

I parked the car and decided to take a walk through the lava field. The path was uneven, and I had to watch my step, but it was worth it. The views were incredible, with the lava formations stretching out as far as the eye could see. The name Berserkjahraun comes from the Eyrbyggja Saga, a tale of two Swedish berserkers who were tasked with clearing a path through the lava field. According to the saga, one of the Swedes fell in love with Víga-Styr's daughter and asked for her hand in marriage. Víga-Styr made a deal with the berserker, he could have his daughter's hand if the two Swedes could clear a path through the lava field, connecting Víga-Styr's farm to his brother's. The berserkers completed the path, but Víga-Styr had them killed and buried near the path. It's a brutal story, but it adds a layer of intrigue to this already fascinating place.
There are four landmarks from the saga that can be found in Berserkjahraun: Berserkjagata (the path itself), Berserkjadys (where the two Berserkers are supposed to be buried), Landamerkjagarður (a boundary fence) and Fjárrétt (a sheep den). The lava field was created after four scoria craters erupted in short intervals around 4000 years ago. The lava ran from the mountain slopes of Bjarnarhafnarfjall and out to the sea at Hraunsfjörður and Hraunsvík. The two largest craters are Rauðkúla and Grákúla. The name Rauðkúla and Grákúla can be translated to “Red Crater” and “Grey Crater” respectively.
For lunch, I headed to Bjargarsteinn Mathús in Grundarfjörður. This charming restaurant is known for its local and international cuisine, with a focus on seasonal dishes. The house was transported 140 kilometers from Akranes town to its current location, where it has a new role as a restaurant. I ordered the fish and chips, which was delicious and reasonably priced by Icelandic standards. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and attentive. I enjoyed the view of the harbor while I ate.

Before dinner I stopped at Kirkjufell knitting. I have been looking for some authentic Icelandic yarn, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to find some. The shop had a variety of hand-knitted items and local wool. I chatted with the owner, who was passionate about her craft. I ended up buying a skein of beautiful blue yarn, which I plan to use for a scarf. I have a feeling I will find some more knitting opportunities tomorrow, when I visit Snæfellsjökull National Park.

For dinner, I decided to try Hjá Góðu Fólki, a restaurant known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious food. The name translates to At Good People's Place, and it certainly lived up to its name. The restaurant has a charming ambiance, and the owners are incredibly friendly. I ordered the fish soup, which was highly recommended, and it was one of the best I've ever had. The ingredients were fresh, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. The restaurant also has a corner with local artisan foods. Many reviewers note that the staff is energetic. The restaurant also has greenhouses where they grow their own ingredients.

As the day came to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences I had. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula truly lives up to its reputation as Iceland in Miniature, with its diverse landscapes and rich history. From the iconic Kirkjufell Mountain to the ancient lava fields of Berserkjahraun, every corner of this region has something unique to offer.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Snæfellsjökull National Park, including the Sönghellir Cave and Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge. I'm excited to see what other adventures await me on this captivating peninsula. I'm also planning on having breakfast at Arnarbær, lunch at FRISTA Food Truck Arnarstapi and dinner at Agnið streetfood. I might also visit the Skipper Restaurant bar.
