Day 2: Crater Climbs and Cave Dives

Today was all about contrasts – ascending to panoramic heights and descending into the silent darkness of the earth. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula continues to surprise and delight, offering a blend of raw natural beauty and intriguing geological history. I was eager to explore more of what this region has to offer.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Samkomuhúsið Arnarstapa. Fuelled up with some traditional Icelandic fare, I was ready to tackle the first adventure: Saxhóll Crater.

The drive to Saxhóll was stunning. The landscape was a patchwork of moss-covered lava fields stretching out towards the ocean. Even though June in Iceland means milder weather, I layered up, remembering how quickly things can change here. Reaching the base of the crater, I was struck by the sight of the metal staircase leading to the summit. It looked like a modern art installation against the ancient volcanic backdrop.

The climb up Saxhóll was invigorating. The wind was definitely picking up, but the steps made the ascent manageable. As I climbed, the views unfolded dramatically. From the top, the panorama was breathtaking – the vast expanse of the Atlantic, the rugged coastline of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier in the distance. It was easy to see why this spot is so popular. I took some time to soak it all in, feeling a profound connection to the powerful forces that shaped this land.

To truly appreciate Iceland, you need to experience its extremes – the soaring heights and the hidden depths.

Next on the itinerary was Vatnshellir Cave.

After the wide-open vistas of Saxhóll, I was ready to delve into the depths of the earth. The drive to the cave took me through more of the surreal Snæfellsnes landscape. Arriving at the cave entrance, I met my tour group and guide. Equipped with helmets and flashlights, we descended into the darkness.

Vatnshellir Cave is a lava tube formed thousands of years ago. Walking through the cave was like stepping onto another planet. The rock formations were incredible – bizarre lava stalactites and stalagmites, sculpted by the slow drip of mineral-rich water over millennia. Our guide explained the geology of the cave, pointing out different rock layers and formations. It was fascinating to learn about the volcanic activity that created this subterranean world.

At one point, the guide had us turn off our flashlights to experience complete darkness. It was an eerie, profound sensation – a silence so deep, it felt like the earth was holding its breath. Emerging from the cave, I felt a renewed appreciation for the hidden wonders that lie beneath our feet.

The final stop for the day was Lóndrangar.

These basalt rock pinnacles are all that remains of a volcanic crater, battered by the ocean for eons. As I approached, their imposing silhouettes against the sky were striking. The wind was fierce here, and the waves crashed against the cliffs with tremendous power. I took a walk along the coastal path, admiring the dramatic scenery and the abundant birdlife. Legend has it that elves inhabit the area around Lóndrangar. Whether or not that's true, there's definitely a palpable sense of magic about this place.

Before heading to dinner, I stopped by Hlaðan Veitingahús for a quick drink.

It was a cozy spot to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. For dinner, I decided to try Hótel Snaefellsnes.

The restaurant there served traditional Icelandic dinners with organic ingredients. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

As I sit here, writing this, I'm already excited about tomorrow's itinerary. Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall are calling, as is the Berserkjahraun lava field. I might even pick up some knitting at Kirkjufell knitting. The adventures never end in Iceland, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

This solo trip has been a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature and challenge myself. While I miss David, I know he’d be proud of me for embracing the unknown and exploring this incredible corner of the world. I am sure he would have loved today's adventure, especially the Vatnshellir Cave, given his interest in geology.
