Embracing the Wild Beauty of Snæfellsnes

After a long flight from Berlin, I finally arrived in Iceland, ready to embark on my solo adventure through the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The air was crisp and clean, carrying a hint of the sea, and the landscape was unlike anything I’d ever seen. It felt good to be alone, to have the freedom to explore at my own pace, and to fully immerse myself in the raw beauty of this volcanic island. This trip is not just a break from my routine as an environmental consultant, but a deep dive into nature's wonders, a chance to recharge my soul, and, hopefully, gather insights that I can use both in my work and in my personal life.

My first stop was the Snæfellsnes Visitor Center. It was a great starting point to get oriented and gather some local insights. The staff were incredibly helpful, providing me with maps and brochures, and answering all my questions about the peninsula's attractions. It's amazing how much local knowledge you can gain just by chatting with the people who call this place home. I also picked up a few souvenirs from the shop – a small, hand-carved puffin and a book on Icelandic folklore.

Next on the itinerary were the Gerðuberg Cliffs. These basalt columns are truly a sight to behold – a half a kilometer cliff of hundreds of basalt column stacks stands like an army of pillars in a side-by-side row. Formed by ancient lava flows, they stand tall and symmetrical, resembling a natural fortress. I spent a good hour walking along the base of the cliffs, marveling at the geometric precision of the columns. The way the sunlight played across the dark stone was mesmerizing, creating a play of light and shadow that enhanced their already dramatic appearance. It was easy to see why some compare them to a man-made structure; their uniformity is almost too perfect to be natural.

The landscape of Snæfellsnes is a reminder that nature is the ultimate artist, capable of creating masterpieces that dwarf anything we can imagine.

Driving further into the peninsula, I made my way to Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring. The spring is located on a farm, and it's said to have healing properties. The water is rich in minerals, and has a slightly metallic taste. I filled up my reusable water bottle, and took a sip. It was definitely different from the tap water I’m used to in Berlin, but strangely refreshing. The locals believe it's good for everything from heart health to kidney function. Whether that's true or not, I appreciated the chance to connect with the land in such a direct way.

For breakfast, I stopped at Kaffi 59 in Ólafsvík. It's a cozy little café with a fantastic view of Kirkjufell mountain. I ordered a traditional Icelandic breakfast of skyr with berries and a strong cup of coffee. The skyr was creamy and tart, and the berries were bursting with flavor. It was the perfect way to start the day.

Lunch was at Sjávarkjallarinn, also in Ólafsvík. This seafood restaurant is known for its fresh, local ingredients. I opted for the fish soup, which was hearty and flavorful, packed with cod, shrimp, and mussels. The broth was rich and creamy, and the seafood was cooked to perfection. It was exactly what I needed to warm up after a morning of exploring.

As evening approached, I drove to Stykkishólmur, a charming fishing town on the north side of the peninsula. The colorful houses and the bustling harbor create a picturesque scene. I had dinner at Narfeyrarstofa, a restaurant that came highly recommended. The restaurant is in an old house with a cozy and romantic atmosphere. The menu features local ingredients, and the dishes are artfully prepared. I started with the lightly cooked scallops, followed by the pan-fried cod with green pea purée. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, showcasing the best of Icelandic cuisine. The service was impeccable, and the staff made me feel right at home.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Saxhóll Crater, Vatnshellir Cave, and Lóndrangar. I’m also hoping to find a cozy bar to relax in the evening, maybe Hlaðan Veitingahús. But for now, I'm content to reflect on the day's adventures and look forward to whatever tomorrow may bring.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula in June is proving to be an extraordinary experience. The weather has been mild, with daytime temperatures around 11°C, and just a bit of rain. The long daylight hours, thanks to the midnight sun, give me plenty of time to explore. The landscapes are vibrant and green, and the air is fresh and invigorating. It's a perfect time to visit this magical corner of Iceland.

As I sit here, writing in my journal, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to connect with nature and explore a new part of the world. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a place of stark contrasts and breathtaking beauty, where ancient lava fields meet towering glaciers, and where the forces of nature are on full display. It's a place that challenges you to step outside your comfort zone and embrace the unknown, and I'm excited to see what other adventures await me on this solo journey. I really miss David, though, and I wish he could see all this with me. I'll have to bring him back here someday. Maybe we can even convince him to take a break from coding and join me on more of these spontaneous adventures. Until then, I'll keep exploring and sharing my experiences, hoping to inspire others to seek out their own wild places and connect with the natural world.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I realize that the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul and awakens the senses. It's a place where you can disconnect from the noise of modern life and reconnect with the rhythms of nature, and I'm grateful for every moment I get to spend here.
