Whispers of Ancient Civilizations

Today was a day of delving into the heart of Peruvian history and culture, a journey that took us through stunning landscapes and ancient ruins. It was a day where the past felt incredibly present, whispering stories of civilizations long gone and leaving me in awe of the rich tapestry of human history.

We started our day with a delightful breakfast at Creperie Patrick. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of delicious crepes filled the air. It was a cozy spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. David opted for a savory crepe filled with local cheese and vegetables, while I indulged in a sweet crepe with fresh fruit and a drizzle of honey. It was the perfect start to our historical adventure. Patrick, the owner, a Frenchman who has been in Huaraz since 1986, sure knows how to make one feel at home.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off to explore the Callejón de Huaylas. The valley stretches as far as the eye can see, flanked by the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra. The views were simply breathtaking, with snow-capped peaks piercing the sky and lush green valleys unfolding beneath them. The Santa River snaked its way through the valley floor, a lifeline for the communities that call this place home. It was easy to see why this valley is considered one of the most beautiful places in Peru.
To walk through these ancient sites is to feel the pulse of civilizations that shaped the very land we tread.
We drove along the Callejón de Huaylas, stopping at various viewpoints to soak in the scenery. The towns we passed were charming and full of character, each with its own unique story to tell. I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like for the people who lived here centuries ago, farming the land and building their lives against the backdrop of these majestic mountains. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and wildflowers. November in the Andes is simply magical, a perfect blend of sunshine and cool breezes.

Our main destination for the day was the Templo de Wilcahuain. This pre-Inca site is located just a short drive from Huaraz and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of the Wari culture. As we approached the temple, I could feel a sense of anticipation building within me. The stone structure stood proudly against the sky, a testament to the skill and ingenuity of its builders. The temple dates back to around 1100 AD and is thought to have been an important ceremonial center. Some believe it has characteristics of a mausoleum.

We explored the three-story temple, marveling at the intricate stonework and the sheer scale of the structure. Each floor originally had seven rooms. It's amazing to think that this building has stood here for over a thousand years, witnessing the rise and fall of empires and the changing tides of history. The views from the top of the temple were incredible, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding valley and mountains. I could almost feel the presence of the ancient people who once gathered here, their spirits still lingering in the air.

After exploring the Templo de Wilcahuain, we stopped for lunch at Calima - Restaurant & Café. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the staff were very welcoming. David ordered the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian dish of stir-fried beef with onions, tomatoes, and peppers, while I opted for the ossobuco. Both dishes were delicious, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. We washed it all down with some refreshing limonada, feeling satisfied and content after a day of exploring.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Huaraz, but not before a little nightcap at El Alquimista Rooftop Bar. This bar offers the best views of the city and a cozy atmosphere. Sipping on pisco sours as we watched the city lights twinkle below was the perfect way to end the day. The air was cool and crisp, and the stars seemed to shine brighter than ever. We chatted about our adventures and made plans for tomorrow, excited about the prospect of ziplining through the Andes. It's something I have never done before, so I am a bit nervous.

Tomorrow, we are planning to get our adrenaline pumping with some ziplining adventures at Huaraz Zipline Adventures and Top Adrenaline - Zipline Huaraz. It will be a day of soaring through the skies and taking in the breathtaking views from a different perspective. I'm also looking forward to visiting Boutique Lachin, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs and mementos of our trip. And of course, we'll be trying out new restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including Hierba Buena Restaurante, D’Dos Restaurant, and Trivio Resto Bar.

Before heading back to the hotel, we reminisced about the day's adventures and the historical gems we discovered. We were so happy to have experienced a bit of the local night life. It's amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow with each new experience. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the ancient people who once called this place home. Their stories are etched in the stones of Wilcahuain, and their legacy lives on in the hearts of the people who still cherish this land.

The crisp mountain air and the quiet of the hotel room lulled me into a peaceful sleep, dreaming of the adventures that await us tomorrow. It's moments like these that make me realize how lucky I am to be able to travel the world and experience new cultures. I am also glad David is able to experience these things with me.

I am eager for what tomorrow brings. Good night from Huaraz!
