A Day of Heights and Delights

Today was all about pushing my boundaries and experiencing Huaraz from a completely different perspective. David and I dove headfirst into an adventure that had us soaring through the Andean skies, followed by delicious discoveries in town. It's amazing how a little adrenaline can sharpen your appetite for both adventure and authentic local flavors.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Hierba Buena Restaurante. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, while David, ever the coffee aficionado, savored the local brew. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the heights that awaited us. The anticipation was palpable as we made our way to Huaraz Zipline Adventures.

There are a couple of choices when it comes to ziplining here, and we decided to go with both Huaraz Zipline Adventures and Top Adrenaline - Zipline Huaraz. After a safety briefing, we were harnessed up and ready to go. I must admit, standing on that platform, looking out at the vast expanse of the Andes, my heart skipped a beat. But as soon as I launched off, all fear vanished, replaced by pure exhilaration. The wind rushed past my face as I flew through the air, taking in the stunning views of the Cordillera Blanca. David, of course, was in his element, whooping with joy as he zipped alongside me.

Sometimes, the best views come after the scariest climbs – or in this case, the most exhilarating zip lines.

The ziplines were incredible! We crossed a ravine and a canyon and there were even a couple of sky bridges to navigate between the ziplines. The guides were fantastic, making sure we felt safe and comfortable throughout the experience. I felt like a bird soaring through the mountains, completely free. It was an experience that I will never forget. It's funny, I packed all these 'essentials' but forgot a power adapter, and I am constantly running out of battery on my phone and camera. David is teasing me endlessly about it.

After our high-flying escapade, we were ready for lunch. We chose D’Dos Restaurant, enticed by its promise of authentic Peruvian cuisine. We shared a variety of dishes, including some delicious ceviche and lomo saltado. D’Dos Restaurant maintains the old-fashioned flavors, those ancient recipes that make us close our eyes and return home. Everything was bursting with flavor. It was the perfect way to refuel after our adventurous morning.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to explore the local shops. I wanted to find a special souvenir to remember our time in Huaraz. We stumbled upon Boutique Lachin, a charming little shop with stylish Peruvian fashion that blends tradition and modernity. I found a beautiful alpaca scarf, the perfect piece to remind me of our time here and to keep me warm back in Berlin. The city’s main shopping area, Plaza de Armas, is the heart of commercial activity.

As evening approached, we made our way to Trivio Resto Bar. This place is known for its craft beer and organic coffee, and also for using local products from their bio-chacra. It’s named after the Latin word Trivium, which means the meeting of three roads. The idea is that it’s a place where people can stop, chat with friends, and enjoy good food and drinks. We enjoyed some craft beers while we relaxed. For dinner, I had the lomo saltado al Trivio, while David chose the trout. Both were delicious. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and we enjoyed chatting with some of the locals.

Sitting there, reflecting on the day, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Huaraz had surprised me in the best possible way. It’s not just about the stunning landscapes; it’s about the warmth of the people and the richness of the culture. As we walked back to Hotel La Joya, I couldn’t help but feel excited about what tomorrow would bring. We are planning to explore more of the region with Colonia Expeditions and Pacha Andean Walkers [Colonia Expeditions, Pacha Andean Walkers]. I’m also looking forward to trying Cafe Andino for breakfast, Manka Fusión Artesanal for lunch, and Wayta - El Chef Andino for dinner. And perhaps we'll end the day with a drink at Trece Buhos. I'm also hoping I can find a power adapter somewhere!
