Exploring the Natural Wonders of Huaraz with David
Day 12: Farewell, Huaraz: Reflecting on an Andean Adventure
Join Emily and David as they wrap up their Huaraz journey, savoring final moments in the Andes and reflecting on unforgettable experiences.
Adios, Huaraz!
Today marks the end of our incredible journey in Huaraz. It feels like just yesterday we were landing in Lima, excited to begin our exploration of the Peruvian Andes. Now, as we prepare to leave, I’m filled with a mix of gratitude and a touch of sadness. This trip has been everything we hoped for and more, exceeding all expectations with its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture.
Our last day began, as many others did, with a delightful breakfast at Cafe Andino. David and I shared a hearty breakfast burrito, modified with tofu, and sipped on strong Peruvian coffee, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the past twelve days. The cozy atmosphere of the café, with its wooden interiors and views of the city, provided the perfect setting for our final morning in Huaraz. I made a mental note to try and recreate their delicious coffee back in Berlin, though I suspect it won't quite capture the magic of drinking it here, surrounded by the Andes. It's amazing to think that this cafe has been a Huaraz staple since 1997.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we decided to make the most of our remaining time by visiting Amazing Huayhuash, an agency specializing in tours around the Cordillera Huayhuash. Even though we didn't have time for the full multi-day trek, we were able to gather information about potential future adventures. The Huayhuash Circuit, I learned, is a trek of about 180 kilometers, and is considered to be one of the best and most memorable hikes in the world. It definitely sounds like something David and I would be interested in doing, perhaps next time we are in Peru.

The mountains are calling and I must go.
Next, we walked over to waroma eco tours peru. We wanted to learn more about their sustainable and eco-friendly tourism options. We were very impressed by their commitment to responsible travel, and their dedication to opening new hiking and mountain routes. It was inspiring to hear about their efforts to improve the tourism industry in Huaraz and offer unique experiences to visitors. We spoke with Angel Velasquez Castro, the founder of the agency and a mountain guide, who shared his passion for the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash. It's clear that Waroma Eco Tours is driven by a genuine love for the region and a desire to share its beauty with others in a responsible manner.

For lunch, we indulged in some delicious crepes at Creperie Patrick. This charming restaurant, with its French-Peruvian fusion cuisine, has been a Huaraz institution since 1986. We savored both savory and sweet crepes, marveling at the creative combinations of local ingredients and French culinary techniques. David opted for a crepe filled with alpaca bourguignon, while I chose one with local fruits and homemade granola. The restaurant itself is located in a building dating back to the 1940s and it serves as an art gallery for local artists.

As the afternoon waned, we sought out Bohemia Resto Bar Huaraz for one last taste of local nightlife. While enjoying a local beer, we reflected on our experiences. It seemed like only yesterday we were marveling at the turquoise waters of Laguna 69 and challenging ourselves on the Santa Cruz trek.

Our trip wasn't without its hiccups. I still regret forgetting the power adapter, which made charging our devices a bit of a challenge. And the extra camera batteries? Definitely should have packed those! But these minor inconveniences faded into insignificance against the backdrop of the awe-inspiring landscapes and the warmth of the Peruvian people.
Huaraz has left an indelible mark on our hearts. The towering peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, the vibrant culture, and the friendly locals have created memories that will last a lifetime. We came seeking adventure, and we found it in abundance. But we also discovered a place of profound beauty, resilience, and warmth. As we prepare to leave, we carry with us not only photographs and souvenirs but also a deep appreciation for this remarkable corner of the world.
While there don't appear to be any specific festivals or events coinciding with our departure date, I did notice posters around town for Tributazo Rock Fest 2025, scheduled for October 18th. It sounds like Huaraz has a lively music scene! Also, I read about the Yungay Tourism Week which happens in late October.
Looking back on the trip, I am so glad that we decided to come to Huaraz. It's a place that challenges you physically, inspires you creatively and enriches you culturally. I can't wait to return someday and explore more of what this incredible region has to offer. Maybe next time we'll even tackle the Huayhuash Circuit!
As we head back to Berlin, I'm already dreaming of our next adventure. Until then, adios, Huaraz! Thank you for the memories.
Reflecting on our time here, I’ve compiled a few tips for anyone planning a trip to Huaraz:
Acclimatize Properly: Huaraz is located at a high altitude, so it's essential to spend a few days acclimatizing before undertaking any strenuous activities. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and take it easy on your first few days.
Pack Appropriately: The weather in the Andes can be unpredictable, so be sure to pack layers of clothing, including warm jackets, waterproof gear, and sturdy hiking boots. Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun at high altitude.
Hire a Local Guide: Consider hiring a local guide for treks and tours. They can provide valuable insights into the region's history, culture, and ecology, and ensure your safety on the trails.
Learn Some Spanish: While many people in Huaraz speak English, knowing some basic Spanish phrases will enhance your interactions with locals and make your trip more enjoyable.
Respect the Environment: Practice Leave No Trace principles when hiking and exploring the region. Pack out all trash, stay on marked trails, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Support Local Businesses: Choose locally owned hotels, restaurants, and tour operators to support the local economy and ensure that your tourism dollars benefit the community.
Be Prepared for Altitude Sickness: Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of fitness level. Talk to your doctor about medications to prevent altitude sickness, and be aware of the symptoms, such as headache, nausea, and fatigue. If you experience these symptoms, descend to a lower altitude immediately.
And with that, our time in Huaraz has come to an end. It's been an unforgettable experience, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to have explored this beautiful corner of the world with David. Until next time, happy travels!
