A Day of Andean Adventures

Today was all about embracing the spirit of Huaraz, diving headfirst into its adventurous heart and savoring the local culture. It’s amazing how a day can be filled with so many different experiences, each leaving a unique mark on our travel memories. David and I set out this morning with a plan to explore the region's renowned treks, hunt for authentic crafts, and indulge in the local cuisine.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at El Fogón. It's a cozy spot that came highly recommended for its local flavors and warm atmosphere. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast – tamales and strong coffee – while David went for the heartier *desayuno* of eggs, bread, and cheese. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the day's adventures. The restaurant was easy to find, and we enjoyed the friendly staff. It’s the kind of place where you feel like a local, even as a tourist.

Our main focus for today was to get a feel for the trekking scene in Huaraz. After all, this region is known as the hiking capital of Peru ! We started by visiting Huaraz Treks and Climbs, a well-regarded agency known for its expertise in the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash regions. We chatted with Rodolfo, who was incredibly helpful in explaining the various options, from day hikes to multi-day expeditions. David was particularly interested in the Huayhuash Circuit, a challenging 112-mile trek that circles the Cordillera Huayhuash.
I was captivated by the stunning photos of turquoise lakes and snow-capped peaks. While committing to a full circuit this time wasn't feasible, we gathered invaluable information for a potential return trip. Rodolfo shared insights about acclimatization, necessary gear, and the best times to visit. He also emphasized the importance of responsible trekking, respecting the environment, and supporting local communities.

Next, we ventured over to Huayhuash Treks, another reputable agency specializing in treks around the Huayhuash range. We spoke with one of their guides, who had an infectious passion for the mountains. He regaled us with stories of challenging climbs, hidden valleys, and encounters with local wildlife, including the majestic Andean condor. He highlighted the trek's highlights, such as the Siula Lakes and the Guñoc-Viconga hot springs. The guide also stressed the importance of physical conditioning and altitude acclimatization. David and I left feeling inspired and armed with even more knowledge for future trekking endeavors.

After our immersion in the trekking world, it was time for a change of pace. We decided to explore the local crafts scene, and Arisha Andean Store came highly recommended. This charming shop is a treasure trove of handmade products, showcasing the skills of local artisans. From intricately woven textiles to stunning pottery, each item tells a story of Andean tradition and creativity. I was particularly drawn to the vibrant colors and unique designs, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.

I ended up purchasing a beautifully crafted scarf made from alpaca wool, perfect for the Berlin winter. David found a unique piece of pottery to add to his collection back home. The store's inviting atmosphere encouraged exploration, and we spent a leisurely hour browsing through the diverse selection. It's more than just a shop; it's a celebration of craftsmanship and a window into the soul of the Andes.

By now, our stomachs were rumbling, so we set out in search of a satisfying lunch. Based on a recommendation, we headed to Don Cuy, a local restaurant known for its traditional Huaraz cuisine. The restaurant itself is quite spacious, with a lovely ambiance complete with a small pool. We arrived around lunchtime and were promptly seated. Don Cuy is known for its *cuy*, or guinea pig, a local delicacy. While I wasn't quite brave enough to try it, David, ever the adventurous eater, decided to give it a go. He ordered the *cuy colorado*, guinea pig prepared with a spicy red sauce. I opted for the *lomo saltado*, a classic Peruvian stir-fry with beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes.

While waiting for our food, we soaked in the lively atmosphere. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the flavors of Huaraz. Our meals arrived, and we were both impressed by the generous portions. David dove into his *cuy colorado* with gusto, while I savored my *lomo saltado*. The beef was tender and flavorful, and the combination of spices was simply divine. David, to my surprise, thoroughly enjoyed his *cuy*, declaring it a unique and delicious experience. I was glad he tried it, though I think I'll stick to the *lomo saltado*! The service was a bit slow, but the delicious food made up for it.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner. We chose PAULINO'S INDIAN CUISINE, a restaurant that had garnered rave reviews for its authentic Indian flavors. I know it seems odd to go to an Indian restaurant in Peru, but we were both craving something different after days of Peruvian food. Plus, I love Indian food and was curious to see how it would be in the Andes.

The restaurant is located on Avenida Luzuriaga, offering great views of Parque del Periodista. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff was incredibly friendly. We started with the beef *bharji* and then ordered the chicken pineapple curry and a fish *masala*, both served with rice. We also ordered garlic *roti*, chutney, and a refreshing yogurt salad. The food was absolutely delicious, with rich and diverse flavors that transported us straight to India. The portions were huge, and the prices were very reasonable. It was the perfect way to end our day of Andean adventures.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore more of the trekking options around Huaraz, visiting Amazing Huayhuash and waroma eco tours peru. I'm also hoping to check out Bohemia Resto Bar Huaraz in the evening. It’s hard to believe this trip is coming to a close, but I’m determined to make the most of our last day here!

As I reflect on our experiences today, I am struck by the warmth and authenticity of Huaraz. It's a place where adventure and culture intertwine, creating a truly unforgettable travel experience. And I'm so glad I get to experience it all with David by my side.

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”

I’m also reminded that I need to buy a power adapter at some point… I'm constantly running out of battery on my camera. And David keeps reminding me about the extra camera batteries I forgot, too! It's always something, isn't it?

Until tomorrow,
Emily
