Family Adventure in the Heart of Siena
Day 6: A Day of Discovery: Unearthing Siena's Hidden Gems
Discovering the serene Basilica di San Francesco, the historic Fontebranda, and the ancient Porta Camollia in beautiful Siena, Italy.

Siena's Secrets Unveiled
Today was all about venturing off the beaten path and diving deeper into Siena's history and culture. It’s easy to get caught up in the grandeur of Piazza del Campo, but I wanted to explore some of the quieter, more reflective corners of this beautiful city. With the family in tow, we set out to discover the hidden gems that Siena holds, and it turned out to be a day filled with unexpected delights and a deeper connection to the city's soul.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Osteria degli Svitati. It's always a treat to start the day with a good meal, and this charming osteria did not disappoint. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. Sophie was particularly excited about the pastries, while Jean-Pierre and I enjoyed some strong Italian coffee to kickstart our morning. We reminisced about our time in Lyon, and how much we missed the simple pleasures of French pastries, but Siena was quickly winning us over with its own culinary delights. [The osteria] took its name from the historic “Compagnia degli Sviati” of which there has been evidence since the first decades of 1600. I am glad we stumbled upon this place.

After breakfast, our first stop was the Basilica di San Francesco. As we approached, the basilica's neo-Gothic facade loomed before us, a stark contrast to the bright, sunny morning. The basilica has been built at two different times: between 1228 and 1255 and later between 1326 and 1475. Inside, the vast nave and transept felt incredibly serene, a perfect place for a moment of quiet contemplation. The interior walls, with their alternating slabs of black and white marble, were particularly striking, creating an optical effect that was both enchanting and slightly disorienting.

Exploring the Basilica di San Francesco was like stepping back in time. The church has a rich history, with construction spanning several centuries. Originally built in the 13th century, it underwent numerous renovations and transformations, including a major restoration after a fire in 1655. Despite these changes, the basilica retains its spiritual essence, offering a peaceful sanctuary from the bustling city outside. I found myself particularly drawn to the rose window, the only original element of the 15th-century facade.
“Sometimes, the most profound experiences come from the quietest places.”
After the Basilica, we made our way to Fontebranda, one of Siena's oldest and most famous medieval fountains. Located in the Terzo di Camollia area, it’s just a short walk from the Basilica. As we approached, the sound of water grew louder, and soon we were standing before the impressive structure with its three Gothic arches. The kids were fascinated by the fountain, imagining how it must have been centuries ago when it served as a vital water source for the city.

Fontebranda dates back to the 13th century, built by the Guild of the Wool-makers. It was more than just a water source; it was a hub of activity where people gathered to collect water, wash clothes, and socialize. According to the legend, in ancient times, a fierce dragon lived near Fontebranda, causing great terror among the population. It was mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy.
Our final stop of the day was Porta Camollia, one of the northern portals in the medieval walls of Siena. As we walked towards it, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. This gate has a fascinating history, and I was eager to see it up close. It was the main entry point for travelers and traders coming from Florence.

The name Porta Camollia is linked to the legend of the founding of Siena. In the 7th century BC, Romulus sent the commander Camullio to capture his nephews Senio and Ascani. Camullio established his camp in the area where the gate stands today. Looking up, we saw the inscription “Cor magis tibi Sena pandit,” which means “Siena opens a heart bigger than this gate”.
After soaking in the history at Porta Camollia, we were all ready for a late lunch. We chose Ristorante Campo Cedro, drawn in by its reputation for blending Italian and Japanese culinary traditions. It was the perfect choice to end our afternoon. The restaurant is just a stone's throw from the center, yet away from the tourist crowds. Jean-Pierre and Sophie opted for traditional Italian dishes, while I decided to be a bit more adventurous and try some of the Japanese-inspired creations.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to San Paolo Pub for a relaxing evening drink. The pub had a unique atmosphere, with rock music playing and a decor that gave the impression of being in a cave. We managed to snag one of the tables by the window, which offered a great view of the central square. I ordered a glass of local wine, while Jean-Pierre tried one of the pub's craft beers. Sophie enjoyed a refreshing lemonade, and we all savored the moment, reflecting on the day's adventures.

Dinner tonight was at Ristorante Taverna Di Cecco, a cozy and traditional restaurant known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and we were quickly seated at a table in the charming outdoor area. The menu featured a variety of classic dishes, and we decided to try a few different options to get a taste of everything.

I started with the pappa al pomodoro, a traditional Tuscan bread and tomato soup that was rich and flavorful. Jean-Pierre opted for the ribollita, another hearty soup made with bread, vegetables, and beans. Sophie, always a fan of pasta, chose the risotto with vegetables, which was cooked to perfection. For our main courses, we shared a selection of dishes, including the tortellini and the risotto with truffles. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.
As we walked back to our hotel, the streets of Siena were quiet and peaceful. The day had been a whirlwind of exploration and discovery, and I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. We had ventured beyond the main attractions and uncovered some of the city's hidden gems. Each of these locations has its own unique story and charm, and I’m so glad we took the time to explore them. Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit the Palazzo Pretorio, Via di Città, and the University of Siena before heading back to Lyon. I can’t wait to see what other treasures Siena has in store for us.
