Siena's Secrets Unveiled
Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Siena, venturing beyond the well-trodden paths to uncover some of its lesser-known treasures. With Jean-Pierre and Sophie in tow, I was eager to explore the historical and cultural richness that this medieval city had to offer. It's days like these that remind me why I love travel so much – the thrill of discovery, the joy of shared experiences, and the creation of lasting memories.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Osteria Nonna Gina. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries filled the air as we stepped inside. It felt like stepping into someone's home, a cozy and inviting atmosphere that immediately made us feel welcome. Sophie was particularly excited about the *crostini*, and Jean-Pierre couldn't resist the *ribollita*, a hearty Tuscan bread soup. I opted for a simple but delicious pastry, which was the perfect start to the day. It's these simple moments, enjoying local delicacies with my family, that truly make a trip special.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Musei dell’Accademia dei Fisiocritici. I had stumbled upon this museum during my research, and it sounded like a fascinating place to explore Siena's natural history. The museum is housed in a beautiful old monastery, which added to its charm. As we walked through the doors, we were immediately transported back in time. The museum is home to an eclectic collection of natural history specimens, scientific instruments, and anatomical models. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the skeleton of a baleen whale, which dominates the central courtyard. Jean-Pierre, with his engineering background, was intrigued by the antique scientific instruments on display. I found myself drawn to the anatomical collections, marveling at the intricate details of the human body. It was a truly unique and educational experience for all of us.

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.”
Next on our itinerary was the Fortezza Medicea, a imposing fortress built in the 16th century. As we approached the fortress, its sheer size and imposing presence were immediately striking. The Fortezza Medicea was constructed between 1561 and 1563 by Duke Cosimo I de' Medici. It was built on the site of a previous fort. We walked along the ramparts, taking in the panoramic views of Siena and the surrounding countryside. Sophie enjoyed running around the open spaces, while Jean-Pierre and I admired the architectural details of the fortress. The fortress now overlooks the Artemio Franchi stadium. The views from the top were breathtaking, offering a unique perspective of the city's skyline and the rolling hills of Tuscany. It was a perfect spot for taking photos and creating lasting memories.

After our historical adventure, it was time for lunch. We headed to Osteria Permalico, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Sienese cuisine. The restaurant is located in a cozy, brick-lined dining space, which added to its rustic charm. We started with *pici*, a thick, hand-rolled pasta that is a Sienese specialty. I opted for the *pici* with *Cinta Senese* ragu, a rich and flavorful sauce made with local pork. Jean-Pierre chose the *pici permalico*, their version of carbonara. Sophie, of course, wanted the lasagna. For dessert, we shared a *tiramisu* that was heavenly. The relaxed atmosphere and delicious food made it a perfect midday break.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we ventured to Palazzo Piccolomini, Siena. This architectural gem offered a glimpse into the lives of the Piccolomini family and the history of Siena. The palace's design is square and finely chiselled in stone. Events and concerts are hosted in the palace's courtyard, mainly in the summer. We wandered through the opulent rooms, admiring the frescoes, tapestries, and antique furniture. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the family's coat of arms, which featured a crescent moon and stars. Jean-Pierre and I were impressed by the palace's architecture and the way it blended Renaissance and Gothic styles. The palace also hosts weddings and other special events.

Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped by Ceramiche Antica Siena By Martini Marisa, a local ceramics shop. I had been wanting to pick up a few souvenirs, and this shop seemed like the perfect place to find something unique and authentic. The shop was filled with colorful ceramics, from plates and bowls to vases and figurines. Sophie immediately gravitated towards the animal figurines, while Jean-Pierre admired the hand-painted plates depicting scenes from Siena's history. I found a beautiful ceramic bowl with a traditional Sienese design, which I knew would be a perfect addition to our home in Lyon. We also picked up a few smaller items as gifts for our friends and family back home. The shop produces and supplies ceramics made in Italy.

For our final meal of the day, we indulged in dinner at Il Bargello. It is a cozy pub that serves authentic Tuscan cuisine. The warm lighting and rustic decor created a welcoming ambiance. We decided to try some of their specialties, starting with the *tagliatelle* and *pici*. Jean-Pierre enjoyed a glass of Chianti. The service was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was a perfect way to end our day of exploration and culinary delights.
