Siena's Secrets Unveiled
Today was all about peeling back the layers of Siena, venturing beyond the bustling Piazza del Campo to discover the city's quieter, yet equally captivating corners. It’s amazing how a city so steeped in history can still offer surprises, even on the fourth day of our family adventure. Jean-Pierre, Sophie and I were all eager to explore, armed with our trusty travel guide and a sense of adventure.
Our first stop was the Orto Botanico dell'Università di Siena, a serene escape from the medieval streets [i]. As a freelance translator working from home in Lyon, I cherish moments of tranquility, and this garden offered exactly that. Sophie, with her boundless energy, was thrilled to explore the winding paths and discover hidden nooks. Jean-Pierre, ever the pragmatist, appreciated the garden's role in supporting research and environmental education.

The garden, nestled within the city walls, is a testament to the university's commitment to preserving biodiversity. We wandered through themed sections, each showcasing different plant species. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the greenhouse, which recreated the humid conditions of equatorial forests. I found myself drawn to the medicinal herb garden, imagining the remedies concocted from these plants centuries ago. It was a peaceful interlude, a reminder of the beauty and resilience of nature.
Leaving the botanical garden, we headed towards the heart of Siena, ready to immerse ourselves in its rich history. Our next destination was the Chigi Piccolomini Palace, a Renaissance gem with a fascinating past. As we walked, I couldn't help but reflect on the contrast between the natural world we had just left and the man-made wonders that awaited us.

The palace, also known as Palazzo Chigi all Postierla, stands proudly on Via del Capitano. Its history is intertwined with the Chigi and Piccolomini families, two of Siena's most influential dynasties. The architecture reflects the Renaissance style, with its elegant façade and intricate details. Jean-Pierre, with his keen eye for design, pointed out the use of pilasters and the square windows with triangular pediments, elements that were innovative for their time.
Inside, we discovered rooms adorned with late Renaissance decorations, including stuccoes and frescoes dating back to 1573. Sophie was captivated by the biblical scenes depicted on the ceilings, while I was intrigued by the stories of the twelve sybils painted in the spandrels. The palace is a testament to the wealth and power of the families who once resided here, a glimpse into a bygone era of artistic patronage and cultural refinement.
Emerging from the Chigi Piccolomini Palace, we continued our exploration of Siena's architectural treasures. Our final attraction for the day was Palazzo Salimbeni, a Gothic-style palace that serves as the headquarters of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the world's oldest bank. The palace stands on Piazza Salimbeni, a square that showcases a harmonious blend of architectural styles.

As we approached the square, I couldn't help but notice the statue of Sallustio Bandini, an economist who invented a new method of payment. The palace itself is an imposing structure, with its neo-Gothic façade and three floors. Inside, we discovered the bank's historical archive and a picture gallery, a testament to the institution's long and storied history.
Sometimes, the most enriching experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of exploration and discovery.
After a day of exploration, our appetites were calling. It was time to indulge in Siena's culinary delights. For breakfast, we started our day at Archivio del Gusto. This cozy spot is known for its delicious pastries and coffee. I enjoyed a cappuccino and a freshly baked croissant, while Jean-Pierre opted for a more substantial breakfast of eggs and bacon. Sophie, of course, couldn't resist the Nutella-filled bomboloni.

For lunch, we ventured to Salefino Wine and Cuisine, a restaurant that had been recommended to us by several locals. The restaurant's simple décor and cozy atmosphere immediately put us at ease. The menu featured Tuscan specialties, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. I ordered the scallop carpaccio, while Jean-Pierre chose the Tuscan rabbit with cream of red pepper. Sophie, ever adventurous, tried the naked ravioli with ricotta, spinach, and parmesan. The food was delicious, and the wine list was extensive. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after a busy day of sightseeing.

As evening approached, we made our way to Ristorante Al Mangia for dinner. This restaurant, located near the Piazza del Campo, offers stunning views of the city. The menu featured traditional Sienese dishes, such as pici cacio e pepe and ribollita. I ordered the pici cacio e pepe, while Jean-Pierre opted for the ribollita, a hearty vegetable soup. Sophie, predictably, chose the pasta with tomato sauce. The food was delicious, and the service was attentive. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

After dinner, we decided to unwind at Bar Il Palio, a bar located right on the Piazza del Campo. The bar is known for its stunning views of the square, as well as its friendly atmosphere. We ordered a round of drinks – a glass of prosecco for me, a beer for Jean-Pierre, and a fruit juice for Sophie. As we sat there, sipping our drinks and watching the world go by, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on all that we had seen and done. We had explored hidden gardens, Renaissance palaces, and Gothic landmarks. We had savored authentic Tuscan flavors and enjoyed the company of locals. It had been a day of cultural immersion, a day of discovery, a day of family bonding. As we walked back to our hotel, the Hotel Palazzetto Rosso, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Siena had once again exceeded our expectations.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Musei dell’Accademia dei Fisiocritici and Fortezza Medicea. I'm particularly excited about visiting the Palazzo Piccolomini in Siena. I've heard it offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of one of Siena's most influential families. And perhaps we'll find a little something at Ceramiche Antica Siena By Martini Marisa to bring back home to Lyon.
