A Day of Discovery in Khao Sok
Today, on the ninth day of our family adventure in Khao Sok National Park, we set out to explore more of this stunning region. I was eager to see what hidden corners we could uncover, and the day certainly didn't disappoint. With Jean-Pierre navigating and Sophie ever-curious, we were ready for whatever surprises Thailand had in store for us. I am also determined to make sure I do not forget the sunscreen again today!
Our morning started with a hearty breakfast at Khao Sok Eagle. This charming restaurant is nestled amidst the lush greenery, offering panoramic views of the park. The atmosphere was incredibly inviting, setting the perfect tone for the day. I opted for the Panang curry, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed the Pad See Ew, and Sophie devoured her mango sticky rice. The staff were exceptionally friendly, sharing tips about local trails and activities. It’s always a pleasure to start the day with such warmth and delicious food. I made a mental note to try and recreate the Panang Curry back in Lyon; I think I could almost get it right.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you never thought to ask.
After breakfast, we decided to visit Ban Ko Kho Khao. This island, just a short boat ride from the mainland, offered a tranquil escape from the busier tourist spots. The boat trip itself was lovely, with the fresh sea breeze and the stunning coastal views. As we approached the island, I couldn't help but notice the long, golden beaches. Sophie was immediately excited, running towards the shore to collect seashells. We spent a good part of the morning swimming in the clear waters and taking a leisurely walk along the beach. The island has a serene, almost untouched feel, making it perfect for families seeking a peaceful day out. I read that Ko Kho Khao was significantly affected by the 2004 Tsunami and that there are Tsunami warning towers scattered across the island. It was a sobering reminder of the power of nature, but also a testament to the resilience of the local communities.

For lunch, we headed back towards the mainland and stopped at Thai Herb Restaurant. This place came highly recommended for its vegetarian and vegan options, which was a welcome change after days of indulging in meat-heavy Thai dishes. The restaurant had a lovely, laid-back vibe, with sweet dogs roaming around, which Sophie absolutely loved. I ordered the Massaman Curry, while Jean-Pierre tried the stir-fried vegetables with tofu. The food was delicious, and the staff were incredibly accommodating, making sure everything was prepared to our liking. The spices were fragrant, and the herbs tasted incredibly fresh. We all left feeling satisfied and energized for the rest of our day.

Our next destination was Khao Sam Kloe, a nature preserve known for its stunning limestone karsts. As we arrived, the sight of the towering limestone formations rising from the lush greenery was breathtaking. We spent the afternoon exploring the area, taking photos from different angles. Sophie was fascinated by the unique rock formations, and Jean-Pierre, ever the photographer, was in his element, capturing the picturesque landscapes. I read that you can even enjoy swimming in the clear waters of the lake there. The preserve offered well-marked trails, making it easy to navigate and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. The cooler months are apparently the best time to visit, but even in November, the weather was pleasant enough to enjoy a leisurely hike. It was a truly serene experience, connecting with nature and appreciating the tranquility of the park.

Before dinner, we stopped by Khao Sok CenterTour, a local shop offering various tours and activities. We were looking for a reliable operator for our trip to Khao Sok Lake tomorrow and thought we would ask them for some advice. The owner, Mook, was incredibly helpful, providing us with detailed information about the lake tour, including tips on what to expect and what to bring. We booked a night safari for another time, as it was highly recommended for spotting wildlife. It’s always great to connect with locals who are passionate about their region and eager to share their knowledge. Sophie was thrilled about the prospect of a night safari; I hope we get to see some elephants!

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Wind Song Bar & Restaurant for dinner. This place had been recommended for its fusion dishes and delicious cocktails. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with a touch of elegance. Jean-Pierre and I enjoyed expertly mixed cocktails while Sophie sipped on a refreshing fruit shake. For dinner, we tried some of their special fusion dishes, which were a delightful blend of Thai and international flavors. The organic vegetables used in the dishes were incredibly fresh, adding to the overall dining experience. It was a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and natural beauty. I even managed to find some inspiration for new cocktail recipes to try back in Lyon.

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Khao Sok Lake and Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park. I’m particularly excited about the lake, with its floating bungalows and wildlife. Sophie is already buzzing with anticipation, and Jean-Pierre is looking forward to capturing more stunning landscapes. I'm also excited to visit Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park, I have heard whispers of its serene beauty and spiritual atmosphere. I feel it will be a welcome contrast to the adventurous activities we have been undertaking.
Today was a wonderful blend of exploration, relaxation, and culinary delights. Khao Sok continues to surprise us with its hidden gems, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience this natural paradise with my family. As we head back to our accommodation, I can’t help but feel a sense of contentment and excitement for what tomorrow holds. I am really looking forward to spending the night in one of the floating bungalows on Khao Sok Lake, it is a unique experience that I know Sophie will remember for years to come.
The stars are particularly bright tonight, and the sounds of the jungle lull us to sleep. It’s moments like these that remind me why we embarked on this adventure in the first place: to create lasting memories and to connect with each other and the world around us.
