Today was a day of pure, unadulterated natural beauty. Leaving Lyon feels like a distant memory as we dove headfirst into the heart of Khao Sok National Park. The early morning mist promised a day of adventure, and Thailand certainly delivered. It's amazing how quickly you can adapt to a new environment, especially when that environment is this breathtaking.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Rafflesia Cafe. I opted for a traditional Thai coffee, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed some fresh fruit and Sophie devoured a stack of pancakes.

After breakfast, we set off for Cheow Lan Lake.

The drive itself was an experience, winding through lush landscapes. I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share such incredible sights with my family. It's moments like these that make all the planning and travel worthwhile.

As we approached the lake, the view opened up to reveal the emerald waters surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. It was a scene straight out of a movie, and I found myself completely mesmerized. Sophie, of course, was immediately captivated, pointing and exclaiming at everything she saw.

We boarded a traditional longtail boat, and our adventure on Cheow Lan Lake began. The air was fresh and clean, and the gentle rocking of the boat was incredibly soothing. Jean-Pierre and I took turns snapping photos, trying to capture the sheer magnificence of the landscape. Sophie, ever the curious explorer, peppered our guide with questions about the lake, the wildlife, and everything in between.

Sometimes, the most beautiful things in life are the ones that require a little effort to reach.

Our first stop was Krai Sorn Viewpoint. The hike to the viewpoint was moderately challenging, but the reward was more than worth it. The trail wound through dense jungle, alive with the sounds of birds and insects. I made a mental note to add a proper pair of hiking shoes to my list of essentials, especially after nearly tripping over a rogue root. I definitely don't want to forget sunscreen next time either!

As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly spectacular. Finally, we reached the summit, and the panoramic vista of Cheow Lan Lake unfolded before us. The emerald waters sparkled in the sunlight, surrounded by the dramatic limestone cliffs and endless jungle. It was, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen. Sophie was ecstatic, running around and pointing out the different rock formations. Jean-Pierre simply stood in awe, taking in the scene with a quiet smile.

After soaking in the views, we made our way back down the trail and returned to our longtail boat. Our next destination was a floating restaurant for lunch. The restaurant was situated on a series of interconnected platforms, bobbing gently on the water. It was a truly unique dining experience. We feasted on fresh seafood, flavorful curries, and plenty of sticky rice. Sophie, surprisingly, tried everything and declared the pineapple fried rice her new favorite dish.

After lunch, we spent some time swimming and kayaking in the lake. The water was cool and refreshing, a welcome respite from the afternoon heat. Sophie, of course, was fearless, paddling around in her tiny kayak with Jean-Pierre close by. I opted for a leisurely swim, enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to shore, feeling grateful and rejuvenated. The day had been filled with adventure, beauty, and plenty of family bonding. I was also thrilled to have captured some amazing photos that I will treasure forever.

For dinner, we decided to try The Heaven Bar & Restaurant. The restaurant had a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with a menu that offered both Thai and international dishes. I opted for a spicy green curry, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a juicy steak. Sophie, predictably, chose pasta. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

After dinner, while Jean-Pierre put Sophie to bed, I decided to check out Jumanji Bar. The bar had a lively and fun vibe, with music and friendly people. I enjoyed a cocktail and chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the local atmosphere.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a reminder of the simple joys in life: family, nature, and good food. Khao Sok National Park has exceeded all of my expectations, and I am excited to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow we are planning to hike the Ton Kloi Waterfall Trail and visit the Khlong Phanom National Park. I think Sophie will especially enjoy seeing the waterfall!

I am also looking forward to trying Little Wild Cafe Khao Sok for breakfast, Chao Italian Ristorante Pizzeria and Thaifood for lunch, and Our Jungle House for dinner. It will be another day of adventure and exploration, and I can't wait. I am also keen to check out Everything shop and see if I can find something interesting there. I've heard that they have a great selection of local crafts and souvenirs.

Before I turn in for the night, I wanted to share a little something I learned today. Apparently, Khao Sok is home to the Rafflesia flower, the largest flower in the world. It only blooms for a few days each year, typically between December and February. It's considered a rare sight. Maybe we will come back during that time, just to see it!
