Chasing Waterfalls and Ancient Echoes

Today was a day of quiet discoveries, a gentle reminder that the most beautiful experiences often lie off the beaten path. With Jean-Pierre navigating and Sophie chattering in the back, we set out to explore some of the Peneda-Gerês National Park's more secluded treasures. It's days like these that make me appreciate our decision to drive from Lyon; the freedom to wander and change our plans on a whim is simply priceless.

Our first stop was the Espigueiro de Alecrimes, an ancient communal granary. These aren't your everyday storage sheds; they're raised structures made of granite, designed to protect the community's corn from rodents and moisture. The craftsmanship was incredible, each stone fitted perfectly, a testament to the ingenuity of generations past. Sophie was fascinated by the little holes that allowed air to circulate, and Jean-Pierre, ever the engineer, was impressed by the structural design. I couldn't help but imagine the stories these espigueiros could tell, the harvests they'd witnessed, the lives they'd sustained.

The air was crisp and carried the scent of pine and damp earth. September in Portugal is such a treat; the summer crowds have thinned, and the landscape is painted in hues of green and gold. It’s the perfect weather for hiking, and I was so glad I remembered to pack our hiking boots. I did, however, mentally curse myself for forgetting the insect repellent – the little critters were out in full force!

After soaking in the history of the espigueiro, we were ready for some natural beauty. Next on our list was Cascata de Cela Cavalos. The drive there was an adventure in itself, winding along narrow, cobblestone roads with breathtaking views at every turn. I must admit, there were moments when I questioned Jean-Pierre's navigational skills, but he always managed to find our way, much to Sophie's delight, who treated the whole thing like a rollercoaster ride.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

When we finally arrived at the Cascata de Cela Cavalos, it was like stepping into a fairy tale. The waterfall cascaded down moss-covered rocks into a crystal-clear pool, the sound of the water a soothing symphony. The sunlight filtering through the trees created a magical, ethereal atmosphere. Sophie, of course, was immediately drawn to the water, and after a quick change, she was splashing around with uncontainable joy. Jean-Pierre and I sat on a nearby rock, watching her, feeling that sense of contentment that only comes from sharing simple moments with loved ones.

I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the beauty of the falls, but as always, the pictures just couldn't do it justice. It's one of those places you have to experience firsthand to truly appreciate. We spent a couple of hours there, exploring the surrounding trails and simply enjoying the tranquility of the place. It was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

For breakfast, we enjoyed Restaurante Pedra Bela Gerês. Situated in the center of Vila do Gerês, the restaurant aims to provide a comfortable space to fully enjoy the fabulous national park and the local cuisine. I had a simple but delicious tosta mista (ham and cheese toast) and Jean-Pierre went for the Pastel de nata. Sophie had some bread with butter and a glass of milk.

Lunch was at O Pimpão, a charming restaurant near Vila do Gerês. The Portuguese cuisine was excellent. Jean-Pierre devoured a hearty portion of cozido à portuguesa (Portuguese stew), while Sophie opted for grilled chicken with fries. I chose the sopa de legumes (vegetable soup) which was delicious and heartwarming. The restaurant had a lovely, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It was the perfect spot to refuel after our morning adventures.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Casa Capela for a drink. This cozy bar is known for its traditional Portuguese atmosphere and friendly service. I savored a glass of local wine, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a Super Bock beer. Sophie, of course, had a juice. We sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air and reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to unwind before dinner.

Dinner was at Encosta do Rio, a restaurant with views of the Water Park Gerês. The menu featured a mix of Italian and Portuguese dishes. Jean-Pierre chose the tamboril (monkfish), while I had pizza. Sophie enjoyed some pasta. The service was quick, and the prices were reasonable. While the food was okay, the restaurant was rated below average on Google.

As I write this, curled up in our cozy guesthouse, I can't help but feel grateful for these days of simple pleasures. Tomorrow, we're heading to *Ponte velha de Castro Laboreiro* and *Poço da Gola*. I'm particularly excited about *Poço da Gola*; I’ve heard it’s a hidden gem with stunning natural pools. I’m also planning to pick up some insect repellent at the *Eco Store*; hopefully that will keep those pesky bugs away! I am really looking forward to seeing what other treasures this park holds. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, to discover the hidden beauty that lies just beyond the familiar.

This park is truly a vibrant combination of natural and cultural features. I feel so lucky to be able to share these experiences with my family. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about creating memories that will last a lifetime. And as I drift off to sleep, I know that tomorrow will bring even more adventures, more discoveries, and more moments to cherish.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

The stars are particularly bright here, far from the city lights of Lyon. Before falling asleep I am already dreaming about tomorrow's exploration of *Ponte Velha de Castro Laboreiro* and the refreshing waters of *Poço da Gola*. Good night from Gerês!
