Island Echoes: Art, Serenity, and Culinary Delights in Honmura
Today was all about immersing myself in the heart of Naoshima's Honmura district, a place where art and everyday life intertwine seamlessly. It’s amazing how this island constantly surprises me, revealing new layers of creativity and tranquility with each passing day. Today's journey was a blend of artistic exploration and culinary indulgence, and I can't wait to share all the details!
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Yuunagi, a charming spot near the ferry terminal. The reviews I'd read spoke of the delightful fried flounder, and they were spot on! It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The husband and wife team running the restaurant were incredibly welcoming, making the experience even more special. It felt like stepping into someone's home, filled with warmth and delicious aromas. It's these kinds of authentic encounters that make traveling so rewarding, reminding me of the simple joys of good food and genuine hospitality.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After breakfast, I set out to find the Shipyard Works by Shinro Otake. Tucked away, it was a bit of a treasure hunt to locate, but so worth it! The installation is a fantastic example of how art can breathe new life into industrial spaces. The repurposed shipyard materials transformed into striking sculptures created a surreal and thought-provoking environment. I was particularly drawn to how the artist incorporated the surrounding coastal landscape into the artwork, blurring the lines between industry and nature. It was a powerful reminder of the beauty that can be found in unexpected places, a theme that seems to resonate deeply throughout Naoshima.

Next on the agenda was Kasaneiwa, a site that promised both natural beauty and a touch of mystery. The journey there involved a bit of a climb, a winding path leading up to the stacked rocks. The view from the top was breathtaking, overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The rocks themselves were intriguing, their precarious balance sparking curiosity about their origins. Were they placed there by nature or by human hands? The mystery only added to the allure of the site, making it feel like a place of ancient secrets and untold stories. It reminded me of some of the quirky roadside attractions David and I used to stumble upon during our cross-country road trips in the States – those unexpected gems that leave you pondering long after you've left.

For lunch, I ventured to maimai, a garage dining cafe known for its Naoshima Burger. This local fish burger, featuring fresh Hamachi (young yellowtail), was a culinary adventure! The fluffy buns and homemade tartar sauce created a flavor explosion that was both satisfying and unique. I opted for the combo meal with cheese and avocado, a decision I did not regret. The cafe itself had a cool, laid-back vibe, and I enjoyed my burger on the terrace, soaking in the island atmosphere. It was a perfect spot for a quick and delicious bite, a testament to Naoshima's ability to blend art with the simple pleasures of life.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to the Honmura Lounge & Archive. More than just a place to buy tickets for the Art House Project [which I plan to explore more of tomorrow!], it's an information center, a souvenir shop, and a gathering place all rolled into one. Designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa, the space itself is a minimalist masterpiece, encouraging relaxation and contemplation. I spent some time browsing the handmade items, each reflecting the island's artistic spirit. The knowledgeable staff provided insights into the local art scene, and I left feeling even more connected to the creative energy of Naoshima. It’s amazing how spaces like this can foster a sense of community, bringing together locals and travelers alike in a shared appreciation for art and culture.

As evening approached, I treated myself to dinner at New Olympia, a sushi restaurant highly recommended for its fresh seafood and cozy atmosphere. It was a bit of a splurge, but definitely worth it. The sushi was exquisite, each piece a delicate work of art in itself. The chef's attention to detail and the quality of the ingredients were evident in every bite. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, perfect for a quiet and reflective meal. It was the ideal way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery, savoring the flavors of the Seto Inland Sea in a tranquil setting.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to revisit the Honmura Lounge & Archive for a nightcap. The bar was still open, and I enjoyed a glass of local sake while chatting with some fellow travelers. We shared stories and insights about our experiences on the island, forging connections over our shared love of art and adventure. It was a reminder of the power of travel to bring people together, transcending cultural boundaries and creating lasting memories. As I walked back to my accommodation under the starry sky, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Naoshima had once again exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of art, serenity, and culinary delights. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to delve deeper into the Art House Project and explore more of Honmura's hidden gems. I might even pick up a power adapter – I really miss using my camera!
