A Day of Discovery in Seville

Today was a day of delving into Seville's rich tapestry of history, art, and architecture. Maximilian and I set out with a sense of excitement, eager to uncover some of the city's hidden gems, places that whisper stories of the past while embracing the present. It's always a thrill to veer off the beaten path, and Seville certainly didn't disappoint.

Our first stop was the Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas, also known as La Cartuja. Situated on an island, it felt like stepping into a different world, a serene escape from the city's hustle. The monastery's history is fascinating; from its beginnings in the 15th century as a Carthusian monastery to its later life as a ceramics factory. The iconic chimneys are still standing, a testament to its industrial past. It's said that Christopher Columbus himself spent time here, preparing for his voyages. As we wandered through the courtyards and cloisters, I couldn't help but imagine the monks who once walked these same paths, their lives dedicated to contemplation and prayer.

The transformation of the monastery into the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (CAAC) is remarkable. The juxtaposition of ancient architecture and modern art creates a unique and thought-provoking experience. We explored the exhibitions, each piece sparking conversation and reflection. It's inspiring to see how Seville embraces both its history and its contemporary identity.

Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that lead us off the well-trodden path, revealing hidden treasures and untold stories.

After immersing ourselves in the tranquility of La Cartuja, we headed to CaixaForum Sevilla. Housed in a modern building, it was a stark contrast to the monastery, but equally captivating. I was particularly excited about the current exhibition, which explores the link between music and mathematics. As someone who appreciates both the arts and sciences, I found the interactive displays fascinating. Maximilian, with his data science background, was equally intrigued.

The exhibition took us on a sonic journey, from the physics of sound to the creation of musical instruments. It was amazing to see how mathematical principles underpin musical harmony and rhythm. There were even workshops and activities that allowed visitors to delve deeper into the subject. It's wonderful to see a museum that makes complex concepts accessible and engaging for people of all ages.

For lunch, we stopped at El Librero Tapas Y Quesos. Tucked away from the main streets, this charming spot offered a welcome respite. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We indulged in a selection of tapas, including, of course, some delicious local cheeses. I particularly enjoyed the spinach and chickpeas, a classic Sevillian dish.

After our satisfying lunch, we made our way to Casa de Salinas. This 16th-century palace, still inhabited by the Salinas family, offered a glimpse into Seville's aristocratic past. Situated in the heart of the old town, a stone's throw from the Cathedral and the Alcázar, the house exudes history and elegance. The facade is simple, but the interior is a treasure trove of architectural details.

We joined a guided tour, which was essential to fully appreciate the house's history and significance. Our guide shared stories of the Jaén family, who originally built the house in 1577, and the Salinas family, who meticulously restored it in the 20th century. The courtyards are stunning, adorned with 16th-century tiles, Carrara marble columns, and intricate plasterwork. One of the highlights was a Roman mosaic from the 2nd century AD, discovered in Italica. It's incredible to think that this palace has been a witness to centuries of Sevillian life.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Restaurante Mirador de Sevilla. Located in Hotel Vincci La Rábida, this rooftop restaurant offered breathtaking views of the city. From our table, we could see the Giralda and the Cathedral illuminated against the night sky. The ambiance was sophisticated yet relaxed, perfect for a special occasion.

The menu featured innovative dishes that put a creative spin on traditional local cuisine. Maximilian and I shared several plates, each one a culinary delight. The service was impeccable, and our waiter was happy to recommend wines to complement our meal. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

After dinner, we ventured to Maldito Cocktail Bar for a nightcap. The bar had an intimate atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day. I opted for a classic Negroni, while Maximilian tried one of their signature cocktails. The bartender was skilled and friendly, making our visit even more enjoyable. It was a great way to end the evening, sipping expertly crafted drinks in a cozy setting.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve further into Seville's cultural landscape, visiting the Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, the Museo de las Ilusiones Sevilla, and the Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica. I'm particularly excited about Italica, as I've always been fascinated by Roman history. We'll also be indulging in more of Seville's culinary delights, with breakfast at LaSanta, cocina tradicional!! Enjoy the food!!, lunch at El Restaurante Cañabota, and dinner at Restaurante Tribeca. And, of course, we'll be sure to do some shopping at Artesanías Medina Sevilla.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Seville's hidden gems. It's a city that rewards those who venture off the beaten path, offering a glimpse into its rich history, vibrant art scene, and warm hospitality. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Maximilian is already fast asleep, dreaming of Roman ruins and Spanish delicacies. Until tomorrow, ¡adiós from Seville!
