Seville's Surprises: Bulls, Brains, and Bygone Eras

Today was a delightful whirlwind of contrasts, a true testament to Seville's multifaceted charm. I love how this city manages to blend the grandeur of history with playful, modern experiences. Maximilian and I dove headfirst into a day that promised to challenge our perspectives and ignite our imaginations.

Our morning began with a visit to the Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla. I must admit, I approached this part of our itinerary with a mix of curiosity and trepidation. Bullfighting is such a controversial topic, and as someone who values compassion and respect for all living beings, I wasn't sure how I would feel witnessing the legacy of this tradition.

As we walked through the ochre-colored walls of the arena, I tried to keep an open mind, reminding myself that understanding a culture requires acknowledging its history, even the parts that make us uncomfortable. The architecture of the Plaza de Toros was undeniably impressive. The intricate details, the sheer scale of the structure, and the weight of history palpable in every stone were captivating. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing stories and insights into the traditions and rituals surrounding bullfighting. He spoke of the bravery, artistry, and skill involved, emphasizing the cultural significance of the spectacle in Spain.

I learned about the different roles within the bullring, the rigorous training of the matadors, and the symbolic meaning behind each movement. While I still struggle with the ethics of bullfighting, I gained a deeper understanding of its historical context and its place within Spanish identity. I found myself appreciating the artistry and athleticism involved, even as I wrestled with my own moral reservations. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, engaged in thoughtful discussions with our guide, asking probing questions and seeking to understand the nuances of this complex tradition.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are those that challenge our preconceived notions and force us to confront uncomfortable truths.

After the intensity of the bullring, we needed a change of pace, and the Museo de las Ilusiones Sevilla was just the ticket. This quirky museum was a welcome dose of lighthearted fun, a place where reality bends and perspectives shift with every step. From optical illusions that made us question our senses to mind-bending exhibits that played with depth and perception, we were constantly surprised and delighted.

We wandered through rooms filled with distorted perspectives, Ames rooms that made Maximilian look like a giant and me a miniature version of myself. We posed for photos that defied logic, floating in mid-air, walking on ceilings, and shrinking into oblivion. It was a joy to let go of our inhibitions and embrace the silliness of it all. I think it's important to have a good laugh every once in a while, and the Museo de las Ilusiones certainly delivered on that front.

The museum was filled with people of all ages, families with young children, groups of friends, and couples like us, all eager to experience the wonder of illusion. It was heartwarming to see so many people engaging with art in such an interactive and playful way. I felt like a child again, my sense of wonder rekindled by the simple magic of visual trickery. Maximilian, ever the data scientist, was fascinated by the scientific principles behind each illusion, analyzing the angles, light, and perspective that created these mind-bending effects.

After our brains had been sufficiently twisted and teased, we decided to venture further afield, to the ancient Roman city of Itálica. Located just a short drive from Seville, Itálica offered a glimpse into a civilization that once thrived on this very land. As we stepped through the gates of the Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica, we were transported back in time, to an era of emperors, gladiators, and sprawling amphitheaters.

The ruins of Itálica are remarkably well-preserved, allowing us to imagine what life must have been like in this bustling Roman settlement. We walked along ancient streets, explored the remains of opulent villas, and marveled at the intricate mosaics that once adorned the floors of these homes. It was humbling to stand in the footsteps of people who lived and died centuries ago, their stories etched into the very stones beneath our feet.

The highlight of Itálica was undoubtedly the amphitheater, one of the largest in the Roman Empire. I could almost hear the roar of the crowd, the clash of swords, and the cries of the gladiators as I stood in the center of the arena. It was a powerful reminder of the human drama that has played out on this stage throughout history. Maximilian, with his keen interest in history, regaled me with tales of Roman emperors and their conquests, painting a vivid picture of Itálica's glory days.

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the ruins, we reluctantly bid farewell to Itálica, our minds buzzing with images of ancient Rome. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with contrasts, a reminder that Seville is a city where history, culture, and modernity intertwine in unexpected and delightful ways.

Before heading back to our hotel, we stopped at Artesanías Medina Sevilla to pick up a few souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-painted fan that I know will remind me of our time here. Maximilian, of course, chose a book about the history of Seville. I am sure he will enjoy reading it on our flight back to Bonn. We dropped off our purchases at Itaca Artemisa by Soho Boutique and freshened up before dinner.

For dinner, we decided to try Restaurante Tribeca, known for its seafood. Maximilian started with the clams with manzanilla sherry, while I opted for the Carabinero prawn tartare. For our main courses, Maximilian chose the lobster and Iberian pancetta tortilla, and I decided to try the fresh fish of the day. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was cozy and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a long day of sightseeing.

Tomorrow is sadly our last day in Seville. We plan to visit the Parque Arqueológico de Carmona, Murillo Gardens and Palacio de San Telmo. We will have breakfast at El Pasaje Santa María la Blanca, lunch at Bodega Palo Santo and our last dinner in Seville at Restaurante El Pasaje Tapas. We will end our trip at Gallo Rojo. Factoría de Creación. with a nightcap.

I am already looking forward to planning our next adventure. I am thinking about visiting Budapest next. I have not been back in years, and I would love to show Maximilian where I grew up. Until then, good night from Seville!
